Abstract

This paper aims at finding the impact of TV shows on bilingualism. However, the analysis would be limited to one educational TV show which has been well-known worldwide: Dora the Explorer. This paper is a library research, in which the data were gathered from the related sources. The data then was described in a qualitative description. As the result, it could be concluded that Dora the Explorer was intended to create create a show that would teach children problem-solving skills and make viewers active participants in the events. Besides the interactive element of the series, its further characteristic feature is bilingualism, which is presented in every episode. The bilingual element is presented in the show because the designer of the show believes that introducing a second language to children before the age of 6 or 7 is crucial in assisting them to achieve fluency in the second language. The effect has been proven by research conducted by Länkinen (2013), which aimed at analyzing the impact of watching certain didactic programs in Dora the Explorer (which is in Finnish called as Seikkailija Dora). From the research, it is found that children who watch Dora the Explorer as a supplement to their learning, have a wider range of vocabulary compared to those who did not watch the TV show.

Abstract

Writing in English is a fundamental productive skill for second-language (L2) learners, both inside and outside the classroom. Grammar correction plays a crucial role in fostering accuracy in writing; however, its effectiveness remains a topic of debate. This study reviews the arguments against grammar correction in L2 writing instruction. The research adopts a qualitative approach, relying entirely on secondary data. Existing studies, scholarly articles, and books on grammar correction in writing were systematically reviewed to extract key insights. Additionally, findings from previous research projects were analyzed to provide a comprehensive discussion. The analysis highlights the diverse perspectives on grammar correction, noting that its application largely depends on multiple factors, including instructional goals, learners' proficiency levels, and contextual settings. A critical issue identified is the role of instructors, whose expertise, adaptability, and teaching experience significantly influence the effectiveness of grammar correction. While some studies suggest that corrective feedback enhances learners’ grammatical accuracy over time, others argue that it can be discouraging and counterproductive. This review also presents theoretical arguments that challenge traditional grammar correction methods and proposes alternative approaches to enhance L2 writing instruction. The findings indicate that there is no one-size-fits-all answer to the debate. Whether grammar correction should be employed depends on specific teaching and learning contexts. Given the limitations of this review, which is solely based on document analysis, further empirical research using diverse methodologies is recommended. Future studies should investigate the long-term impact of grammar correction on L2 writing proficiency through experimental and mixed-method approaches.

Abstract

Seating arrangements play a crucial role in education, but traditional approaches may not meet students' needs. This research is a comparative experimental approach using the concurrent embedded mixed-method research approach to investigate whether different seating arrangements (separate tables and horseshoe) shows a sinificant difference on students' participation potentials and achievement in English. This study explores students’ participation and achievement potential in different seating arrangements (separate tables and horseshoe) on 8th-grade students' participation and achievement in English. Data from 50 students at SMPN13 Mtm were collected through observations, quetionnaire surveys, and tests, analyzed using qualitative and quantitative methods. The findings revealed significant differences in participation potentials across certain indicators, with separate tables enhancing motoric and mental activities and horseshoe arrangements benefiting visual and writing activities. However, both arrangements showed no significant difference in listening, oral, and emotional activities. In terms of achievement, the study revealed significant differences in students' achievement on different seating arrangements students with separate tables achieved higher academic performance compared to the horseshoe arrangement. These results indicate that seating arrangements influence students' participation and achievement, suggesting alternative seating options for implementation in classrooms, with consideration of specific factors.

Abstract

In this paper the researcher needs to discuss fundamental issues related to multilingualism. The first is the concept of multilingualism and the different perspectives on it. Multilingualism can refer to either the use of language or the competence of an individual or to the language situation in an entire nation or society. The multilingualism describes the co- existence, contact and interaction of different languages. The co- existence can take place on a social or individual level. A society can have many different languages spoken and used by different group of peoples. The people themselves do not necessarily have to be multilingual. Likewise, individuals in a community can be multilingual while only recognizes one language for public use through legislation and other form of regulatory control. For society or an individual to become multilingual, contacts and interaction between languages are essential. The coexistence of different languages in society or an individual presupposes fundamental things that are different languages, these different languages have the possibility to come into contact to each other and human being is able to learn and use several languages and also human societies are able to adapt and manage multiple languages. In the next issue we will look at how the choice between languages can be given the same social and affective meaning as the choice of style in a language and the vitality of linguistic diversity in a multilingual community. The selection of the appropriate diversity in multilingual communities depends on social factors and dimensions and the repertoire of the addressee. The factors influencing a speaker's or writer's choice of language vary, and they include the context surrounding the speaker or writer, age, gender, culture, etc. Very often, the choice of language is deliberate and deliberate speaker can change the choice depending on such factors. In the context of an increasingly diverse world, it is important to continue to study multilingualism from all perspectives. It is crucial to continue to explore questions about how, when, and why speakers use certain languages and languages. The effects are not relevant from a stylistic point of view. They can show differences in the relative position of speakers within their societies, indicate power struggles and inequalities.
