Abstract

Rastrelliger kanagurta is a small pelagic fish commodity with high economic value and is vulnerable to overfishing. This study aimed to analyze the length-weight relationship as an indicator of growth pattern of Indian mackerel landed at the Fish Landing Site (TPI) of Sorong City, West Papua. Sampling was conducted purposively from April to June. A total of 191 fish were measured for total length (mm) and body weight (g). The length-weight relationship was analyzed using logarithmic linear regression, followed by a t-test to determine the growth pattern (isometric or allometric). The results showed that the caught fish were dominated by the length class of 185.5–200.5 mm (31.9%) and weight class of 71.5–86.5 g (28.3%). The combined regression coefficient b (April–June) was 2.2498, with a calculated t-value (1.6125) < t-table (1.9725) at 95% confidence level, indicating a negative allometric growth pattern. This means that length gain is faster than weight gain, suggesting relatively slender body condition, presumably due to fishing pressure or food limitation. These findings confirm that the population of Indian mackerel in Sorong waters has experienced a shift in growth pattern, necessitating adaptive management measures such as mesh size regulation and enhanced monitoring of fishing grounds

Abstract

The mangrove ecosystem in Kladufu Village, East Sorong District, faces escalating pressure from land conversion and settlement expansion, which threatens to alter estuarine fish community structures. This study evaluated species composition, abundance, and community responses to environmental gradients and anthropogenic stressors in the area. Field sampling was conducted over four weeks using gill nets (1-, 2-, and 3-inch mesh sizes) across two stations representing relatively intact and fragmented mangrove habitats. Concurrent physicochemical measurements were recorded. Ten fish species were documented, primarily belonging to Leiognathidae and Mugilidae. Abundance patterns exhibited a pronounced spatial shift: Station I (salinity 30‰) was dominated by Mugil cephalus (35.9%), while Station II (salinity 20‰, adjacent to residential areas) showed absolute dominance by Aurigequala fasciata (51.5%). Diversity and evenness indices ranged from moderate to low, accompanied by elevated dominance values at the impacted site, indicating community simplification driven by habitat degradation and domestic effluent inputs. Salinity gradients and mangrove conversion emerged as the principal drivers of species distribution. These findings highlight the urgent need for targeted mangrove rehabilitation and ecosystem-based fisheries management to maintain the area’s ecological function as a nursery ground and sustain local coastal fisheries.

Abstract

Seagrasses are flowering plants (Angiospermae) that grow in shallow marine environments and possess rhizomes, leaves, flowers, and fruits similar to vascular plants on land. This study aimed to identify seagrass species, analyze vegetation conditions including frequency, density, and cover of each species, and examine factors affecting seagrass growth in the coastal area of Soop Village, Sorong Islands District, Sorong City, West Papua. The research was conducted from August to October 2014 using the line transect method with 50 cm x 50 cm quadrats placed systematically along two transects (each 250 m long). Data were analyzed using calculations of frequency, density, cover, and the Important Value Index (IVI). The results revealed three seagrass species: Enhalus acoroides, Cymodocea rotundata, and Syringodium isoetifolium. The relative frequency values were 54%, 26%, and 20% respectively; relative density values were 68%, 16%, and 16%; and relative cover values were 54%, 26%, and 20%. Enhalus acoroides dominated the community with an IVI of 176%. Based on the Decree of the Minister of Environment Number 200 of 2004, the seagrass meadow condition was classified as unhealthy to poor due to anthropogenic pressures such as tourism activities, boat mooring areas, indiscriminate anchoring, and domestic waste disposal. Management efforts including waste bin provision, boat mooring area regulation, and banning of environmentally damaging fishing gear are necessary to restore the seagrass ecosystem

Abstract

The aquaculture business of Sangkuriang catfish (Clarias gariepinus) has significant economic potential and continues to develop in Sorong Regency, West Papua. This study aimed to analyze the income and business feasibility of Sangkuriang catfish farming conducted by the Pandawa Group in Mariat District and the Karya Lele Group in Mayamuk District. The research was conducted from June to July 2016 using a survey method involving five respondents. Data were analyzed using income analysis, Revenue Cost Ratio (R/C Ratio), Benefit Cost Ratio (B/C Ratio), and Break-Even Point (BEP). The results showed that production costs consisted of fixed and variable costs, with feed being the largest cost component. The highest income was obtained by Agustinus Nanang amounting to Rp20,937,000 per production cycle with an R/C Ratio of 2.9 and a B/C Ratio of 1.9. All respondents had R/C Ratio values greater than 1, ranging from 1.5 to 2.9, indicating that the business is feasible and profitable. BEP analysis also showed that the business could reach the break-even point at a certain production level. In conclusion, Sangkuriang catfish farming in Sorong Regency is economically feasible and has good prospects for sustainable development.

Abstract

Vitamin C plays an essential role in maintaining immune function, reducing stress, accelerating wound healing, and supporting collagen synthesis in fish. Adequate dietary vitamin C supplementation can enhance nutrient utilization and promote fish growth and survival. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of dietary vitamin C supplementation on the growth performance and feed utilization of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and to determine the optimal dosage for growth enhancement. The study employed an experimental method using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) consisting of four treatments and three replications. The treatments consisted of a control diet (without vitamin C supplementation) and diets supplemented with vitamin C at levels of 0.5%, 1.0%, and 1.5%. The observed parameters included absolute weight gain, specific growth rate (SGR), daily growth rate, absolute length gain, feed conversion ratio (FCR), feed efficiency (FE), and survival rate (SR). The results showed that dietary vitamin C supplementation significantly improved growth performance, feed efficiency, and survival of Nile tilapia (p<0.05). The best performance was obtained in the treatment containing 1.5% vitamin C, resulting in an absolute weight gain of 2.16 g, specific growth rate of 1.6% day⁻¹, daily growth rate of 0.05 g day⁻¹, absolute length gain of 4.97 cm, feed conversion ratio of 0.94, feed efficiency of 91.80%, and survival rate of 100%. However, the differences in feed conversion ratio were not statistically significant (p>0.05). In conclusion, dietary vitamin C supplementation enhanced growth performance, feed utilization efficiency, and survival of Nile tilapia. The optimal dosage observed in this study was 1.5% vitamin C supplementation in the diet..

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the implementation of skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis) and tuna fishing operations using the pole-and-line fishing method at PT. Radios Apirja, Sorong Regency, West Papua. The research employed a descriptive method, with data collected through field observations, interviews, and documentation during fishing activities. The observed variables included the stages of fishing operations, the use of live bait, fishing grounds, and the catch obtained. The results showed that the pole-and-line method is an effective and selective fishing gear for catching skipjack tuna and tuna. The success of fishing operations is strongly influenced by the availability of live bait, oceanographic conditions, and the skills of the crew in operating the fishing gear. The fishing grounds located around the waters of Misool and Waigeo possess high potential for pelagic fish resources, thereby supporting the productivity of fishing activities. In addition, the fishing operations conducted by PT. Radios Apirja contribute to the local economy through partnership programs established with fishing communities. Therefore, the use of pole-and-line fishing gear can serve as an alternative approach for sustainable fisheries management in the West Papua region.
