Abstract

This article explores Kate Chopin's contribution to shaping the concept of the New Woman, which significantly influenced the development of American literature in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Against the backdrop of the post-Civil War era in the United States, marked by social changes and the growing women’s emancipation movement, this study examines how Chopin, through her seminal works The Awakening and The Story of an Hour, presents a discourse on women’s individual freedom and resistance to traditional gender norms. The analysis employs the framework of the New Woman, introduced by Sarah Grand, to highlight Chopin’s ideas about women’s autonomy over their lives and emotions. The article concludes that Chopin’s works played a pivotal role in creating narratives that reject gender constraints, assert personal identity, and demand emotional independence, all of which became foundational to feminist literature. Thus, Chopin is recognized not only as a pioneer of the New Woman in American literature but also as a visionary who continues to influence how literature portrays women’s freedom and experiences.

Abstract

This study examines the accuracy of translating English coordinating conjunctions into Indonesian in the novel Animal Farm. The aim of the research is to analyze the translation techniques used for these conjunctions and evaluate the accuracy of the English sentences containing them. A qualitative approach is employed, with data drawn from the English version of Animal Farm and its Indonesian translation, Republik Hewan. The researcher uses Newmark’s theory to identify the translation procedures and Nababan’s theory to assess translation accuracy. The results indicate that 78% of the data are translated using a literal procedure, while 22% employ a reduction translation procedure. In terms of accuracy, 57% of the data are considered accurate, 13% less accurate, and 8% inaccurate. The accuracy level appears to be influenced by the translation of coordinating conjunctions as well as other sentence components.

Abstract

This study focuses on the discussion of the novel Persuasion, written by Jane Austen and published in 1817. This novel tells the story of Anne Elliot, whose family and godmother persuaded her to break off her engagement with Captain Wentworth because he is not a noble nor has wealth, which is why he is not suitable for Anne, who is a noble. The social class in the Regency period affected the upper class and the lower class, whether in economy, wealth, or social standing. The author uses a Historical biographical approach to relate the period and the author's life with the novel. The author uses a qualitative method to describe the findings. At the end of the study, the author finds that (1) The upper class had many scandals and did not care about the problems of the lower class, and (2) Marriage is considered to maintain the economy and social stability for women. (3) Naval soldiers were treated politely after gaining wealth and social status. (4) Austen's life and values influence the plot and character of the novel. The findings conclude that the novel Persuasion reflects how society in the Regency period saw people by their wealth and gender.
