Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the characteristics of gelatin application from broiler chicken skin as an edible coating that has the potential of antioxidant with liquid smoke. The research method was using Completely Randomized Design (CRD) from gelatin based edible coating from broiler feet skin with smoke concentration treatment each: 0%; 0.5%; 1%; 1.5% and 2%. The results showed that the addition of liquid smoke to a concentration of 2% gave the best results both from the organoleptic aspect (color and aroma) and from the aspect of its antioxidant potential (phenol). Observation of edible microstructure through SEM test on addition of 2% liquid smoke concentration showed edible component composition of edible formula more homogenous than other treatments. The conclusion that the use of liquid smoke as a source of antioxidants has provided an edible alternative to potentially antioxidant characteristics. The concentration of liquid smoke added to this edible preparation of 2% received a positive response of color and taste aspects and contained the highest antioxidant potential.

Abstract

It is important to learn the liver function of Bali cattle reared in landfills. Landfills is an unusual cattle feedlot which in turn will affect the physiological condition of the animals. Early detection of the animal physiological condition through blood plasma examination is one way to determine the animal liver function. This study used 30 Bali cattle reared in landfills (TPA) Suwung South Denpasar. Blood samples were collected aseptically from the 30 Bali cattle and the activity of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) were detected using Refloton test method. Data were analyzed using One Sample T Test. The results showed that activity of ALT was significantly lower (P<0.01) compared to standard ALT value. Whilst the AST was in the range of normal value. HALT is considered more sensitive in determining the liver function compared to the AST value.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to detect urinary tract problem in dogs using ultrasonography method as a diagnostic supporting tool. Two-dimensional ultrasonography was used for examination of 40 dogs. The diagnosis was confirmed by the alteration of shape, size, position and echogenicity of the renal. Abnormalities on renal were extension of medulla, urolithiasis, and renal atrophy. The extension of medulla was indicated by medulla and pelvis dilatation, also disappearance of renal parenchyma. Sonograms of renal urolithiasis were shown by hyperechoic mass with acoustic shadowing. Narrowing of medulla and disappearance of cortex structure were the characteristics of renal atrophy sonogram. Abnormalities in vesical urinary and urethra were cystitis, urolithiasis, and urethral urolith obstruction, respectively. Ultrasonography utilization as diagnostic supporting tool for the urinary organ abnormalities in dogs generating a high accuracy diagnosis.

Abstract

Selection is one action in improving the genetic potential in animal population. Selection will be effective if the traits are varied and depends on heritability of the traits and selection intensity applied. This study was carried out using 270 breeding cows from Bali Cattle Breeding Centre in Sobangan Badung district Bali. The variables measured in this study was body length, withers height and chest girth. The results showed that the estimated selection response of body length, withers height and chest girth based on the heritability of traits and selection intensity was 0.37 cm; 0.64 cm and 1.27 cm respectively. It can be concluded that the estimated selection response of chest girth was the highest compared to body length and height of withers.

Abstract

Newcastle disease (ND) or Tetelo is one of the viral diseases in poultry that causes high mortality and significant economic losses in chicken farms. Newcastle Disease is endemic in Bali as well as in Gianyar. Kerta village is one of the villages in Payangan Subdistrict at Gianyar regency where its location is nearby to the centre of hi breed chicken breeding industry in Kintamani Subdistrict at Bangli Regency and is the poultry trade traffic way from Kintamani to Denpasar. This study aimed to determine the seroprevalence of ND in kampong chickens in the village of Kerta at Gianyar regency. Purposive serum samples were collected from 80 unvaccinated backyard chickens from four (4) banjar (Kerta, Pilan, Buhu, and Marga Tengah) in Kerta village. Serological tests using Hemagglutination (HA) and Hemagglutination Inhibition (HI) were performed to the sera samples. Twenty out of the 80 serum samples (25%) were ND positive. The proportion of ND seropositive in each banjar was: 35%, 30%, 30% and 5% at Kerta, Pilan, Buhu, and Central Marga banjar, respectively. Twelve out of the 20 seropositive samples (12/20 = 60%) had protective antibodies, whilst the remains were negative. It is concluded that the seroprevalence of ND disease in the kampong chickens in Kerta village was 25% with antibody titres of 22 to 29 HI units which derived from natural infection.

Abstract

Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are a microorganism that has non-toxic properties and capable of producing antimicrobial compounds namely bacteriocin. Bacteriocin is defined as a protein compound that has a small molecular weight with antibacterial activity. The study aimed to determine the ability of extracellular protein isolated from Streptococcus bovis 9A as a biopreservative in beef. The study started by cultivation of isolate on to MRS medium, folowed by production of extracellular protein, preparation of meat samples and application of extracellular protein as biopreservative by means of changing in pH value. As many as 18 experimental combinations consist of periods of extracelluler protein immersion and periods of storage at 4ºC were applied in the study. The experiment was repeated 3 times, and pH values of each treatment were observed. Resultsof the study showed that the extracellular protein of the strain capable of inhibitingthe pH increase inthe meatand also prolong themeatstorage at 4ºCfor10 days. This result concluded that the extracellular protein of Streptococcus bovis9A is effective to be used as a biopreservative.
