Abstract

Background: Cancer remains a major global health issue, with approximately 400.000 children and adolescents diagnosed with cancer each year worldwide. Anxiety is one of the most common psychological responses experienced by children undergoing chemotherapy, which may affect treatment cooperation and quality of life. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the effect of psycho-educational therapy on anxiety levels in children with cancer undergoing chemotherapy. Methods: This study used a pre-experimental study one-group pretest–posttest design conducted at the YKAKI (Yayasan Kasih Anak Kanker Indonesia) in Semarang Halfway House from May to June 2023. A total of 25 children diagnosed with leukemia and undergoing chemotherapy were recruited using total sampling. Data were collected using respondent characteristic observation sheets and the Spence Children’s Anxiety Scale (SCAS) to measure anxiety levels. The psycho-educational therapy consisted of four sessions, including education about cancer and chemotherapy, prevention and management of chemotherapy side effects, and stress management techniques. Data were analysed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Ethical approval was obtained from the Ethics Commission of the Faculty of Medicine, Sultan Agung University. Results: Before the intervention, the majority of respondents experienced severe anxiety (44%). After the intervention, most respondents experienced mild anxiety (72%).  The mean anxiety score decreased from 2.24 ± 0.77 before the intervention to 1.32 ± 0.55 after the intervention, indicating a significant reduction of 0.92 points (41.1%) after the intervention (p = 0.001). Conclusion: This study indicates a potential benefit of psycho-educational therapy in reducing anxiety. This intervention may be considered a supportive psychological strategy to help reduce anxiety in children undergoing chemotherapy.

Abstract

Background: Constipation is a prevalent health problem in infants. It is a condition in which infants have difficulty defecating, bowel movements ≤ 3 times a week, and hard and large feces. In Indonesia, the prevalence of constipation in infants is 15.7%, and it needs to be treated appropriately. The effects of constipation are classified into two categories: short-term and long-term. Short-term effects can manifest as discomfort in infants, anorexia, and lack of weight gain. Non-pharmacological interventions, such as pediatric massage therapy, are effective management strategies for infant constipation. Methods: This study employed a one-group pretest-posttest quasi-experimental design with 38 formula-fed constipation infants aged 6-12 months. The pediatric massage therapy intervention, three times a week, was assessed before and after using the Bristol Stool Chart questionnaire. Results: Based on the statistical analysis of 38 respondents (n = 38), a Z value of −5.42 was obtained with a p value (ρ) = 0.000. This result indicates a highly significant statistical difference/relationship (p < 0.05), so the null hypothesis (H₀) is rejected, and the alternative hypothesis (H₁) is accepted. Conclusion: Pediatric massage therapy is an effective complementary therapy for managing constipation in formula-fed infants aged 6-12 months at the Puskesmas Sungai Besar, Ketapang Regency

Abstract

Background: Cognitive development is a crucial component of early childhood education, as it significantly influences children’s ability to think, reason, and solve problems in daily life. However, cognitive development among children aged 5–6 years in preschool settings has not yet reached optimal levels across several developmental indicators. Method: This study employed a quantitative descriptive design and was conducted at Pambudi Bhakti Turirejo Kindergarten, Demak. The participants included 61 children aged 5–6 years, selected using a total sampling technique. Data were collected through direct observation using the Pre-Screening Development Questionnaire (KPSP) and analyzed descriptively using frequencies and percentages. Ethical approval was obtained under EC number 052/KEPK/UNPRI/II/2025. Result: Most participants were aged 6 years (72.1%). The findings revealed that 60.7% of children were categorized as having doubtful cognitive development, 24.6% demonstrated appropriate cognitive development, and 14.8% were classified as deviant. Conclusion: The results indicate that the majority of children require more optimal cognitive stimulation. Therefore, the implementation of creative and child-centered learning strategies, including play-based learning, effective teacher–child interaction, and a supportive learning environment, is essential to enhance children’s cognitive development in preschool education.

Abstract

Background: Perceived or actual low milk production can undermine continued breastfeeding. Moringa is widely used as a food-based galactagogue, whereas direct evidence for chayote and for a combined preparation remains limited. This study examined the association of a moringa leaf–chayote decoction with expressed breast milk volume and infant weight gain. Methods: A quasi-experimental pretest–posttest control-group study was conducted among 14 breastfeeding mothers at the Kalumata Community Health Center, Ternate City. Participants were assigned to an intervention group (n = 7), which consumed 250 g of boiled moringa leaves and chayote, or a control group (n = 7), which received no intervention. Breast milk volume and infant weight were measured at baseline and every seven days over 30 days. Changes between the two groups were analyzed using an independent-samples t-test. Results: The intervention group showed a more favorable distribution of change in expressed breast milk volume. Three mothers (42.9%) had an increase greater than 40 mL, whereas six mothers (85.7%) in the control group had increases of 20 mL or less. The originally reported between-group difference was statistically significant (p=0.001). Infant weight gain was also more favorable in the intervention group (p=0.006). Participant-level continuous records were unavailable for additional analysis; therefore, means, standard deviations, confidence intervals, test statistics, and effect sizes could not be calculated. Conclusion: Within this small, non-randomized sample, consumption of the combined moringa leaf and chayote preparation was associated with greater reported increases in expressed breast milk volume and infant weight. These findings should be regarded as preliminary and require confirmation in adequately powered randomized studies with standardized intervention and outcome-measurement procedures.

Abstract

Background: Anemia is a common health problem among adolescent girls and has an impact on concentration, academic performance, and quality of life. Limited knowledge about the causes, symptoms, and prevention of anemia highlights the importance of health education. This study aims to determine the effect of health education using video media on improving adolescent girls’ knowledge about anemia. Methods: This pre-experimental study with a one-group pretest-posttest design involved 64 eleventh-grade students of SMA Negeri 16 Samarinda selected through random sampling. The intervention consisted of a 5-minute educational video shown three times in one week. Knowledge data were collected using a 20-item multiple-choice questionnaire and analyzed with the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test, as the Shapiro-Wilk test indicated that the data were not normally distributed. Results: The average knowledge score increased from 41.6 ± 8.6 to 86.6 ± 5.9, with p = 0.000 (p < 0.05), indicating a significant effect. Conclusion: Educational videos are effective in improving adolescent girls’ knowledge about anemia and serve as a practical tool for strengthening school-based health promotion efforts.

Abstract

Background: ASIK is a key component of Indonesia’s health digital transformation for immunization recording and reporting. However, its implementation in Community Health Centers (Puskesmas) in Padang City faces challenges, including data discrepancies and suboptimal immunization coverage. This study examines factors associated with health workers’ performance in using ASIK and explores the underlying reasons for these challenges. Method: A mixed-methods study was conducted in five Puskesmas in Padang City. The quantitative phase included 127 health workers using a cross-sectional design, validated questionnaires, chi-square tests, and multivariate logistic regression. The qualitative phase involved in-depth interviews with 13 key informants and thematic analysis. Result: Quantitative analysis showed that motivation (p = 0.014), leadership (p = 0.018), and workload (p = 0.009) were significantly associated with performance, while knowledge was not (p = 0.602). In multivariate logistic regression, motivation was the dominant factor (Exp(B) = 0.254; 95% CI: 0.088–0.734; p = 0.011), indicating that health workers with poor motivation had approximately 74% lower odds of achieving good performance after controlling for leadership and workload. The final model explained 19.5% of performance variance (Nagelkerke R² = 0.195). Qualitative findings identified seven themes: professional responsibility-driven motivation, infrastructure limitations, application bugs, increased administrative workload, digital generation gaps, adaptive strategies, and the need for a single integrated application. Conclusion: Health workers’ performance in using ASIK was relatively good (79.5%) despite systemic barriers, mainly supported by intrinsic professional motivation. However, relying on individual resilience may be unsustainable. Improving ASIK requires addressing technical problems, reducing workload, bridging the digital divide, and strengthening health workers’ professional dedication.

Abstract

Background: Anxiety is a common psychological concern during the postpartum period, particularly among primiparous mothers who are adapting to maternal roles for the first time. Non-pharmacological interventions that are simple, accessible, and applicable in routine postpartum care are therefore needed. Oxytocin massage may promote relaxation and potentially reduce maternal anxiety. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of oxytocin massage in reducing anxiety among primiparous postpartum mothers. Methods: This study used a quasi-experimental pre-test and post-test control group design involving 30 primiparous postpartum mothers. Participants were allocated into an intervention group receiving oxytocin massage (n = 15) and a control group receiving standard care (n = 15). Anxiety levels were assessed using the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HARS). Within-group changes were analyzed using paired-samples t-tests, while differences in anxiety score reduction between groups were assessed using an independent-samples t-test. Results: The mean HARS score in the intervention group decreased from 24.73 before the intervention to 14.27 after the intervention, representing a mean reduction of 10.20 points. In the control group, the mean HARS score decreased slightly from 23.93 to 23.27, with a mean reduction of 0.67 points. The reduction in anxiety scores was significantly greater in the intervention group than in the control group (t = 19.207; p < 0.001). Conclusion: Oxytocin massage was associated with a significantly greater reduction in anxiety among primiparous postpartum mothers compared with standard care. These findings indicate that oxytocin massage may be considered a simple non-pharmacological supportive intervention for anxiety management during early postpartum care
