Abstract

This study investigates the causes of English speaking anxiety and explores teaching strategies that help reduce such anxiety among eleventh-grade language students at SMA Negeri 1 Payangan. Employing a descriptive quantitative approach, data were collected from 30 participants through a structured questionnaire focusing on both anxiety indicators and students’ perceptions of classroom strategies. The findings reveal that a significant number of students experience moderate to high levels of anxiety, particularly related to fear of making mistakes, peer judgment, and forgetfulness during speaking tasks. Descriptive statistical analysis showed that physical symptoms such as a racing heartbeat and emotional barriers like embarrassment were prevalent. The study also identified several effective teaching strategies for reducing anxiety, including teacher encouragement, role-play activities, group discussions, and a relaxed classroom atmosphere. Among these, role-play was perceived as the most engaging and impactful. The results highlight the importance of supportive, interactive, and student-centered pedagogical approaches in fostering confidence and improving speaking performance in EFL contexts.

Abstract

Listening is one of the most essential skills in learning English, especially for students in English Foreign Language (EFL) contexts. However, many students face difficulties in understanding spoken English due to limited exposure to authentic language and a lack of motivation during listening activities. This research aims to investigate the use of English songs as a learning medium to improve students’ listening skills, identify the types of songs that are most effective, and examine students’ responses toward song-based listening activities. This study employed a quantitative descriptive research design and involved 30 seventh-grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Abang. Data were collected through a questionnaire administered after students participated in listening activities using English songs. The questionnaire focused on students’ experiences, preferences, motivation, and perceptions related to listening practice through songs. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, including frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation. The results of the study show that the majority of students had positive attitudes toward the use of English songs in listening lessons. Most students agreed that English songs helped them improve their understanding of pronunciation, vocabulary, intonation, and overall listening comprehension. Students also reported higher motivation and enjoyment when learning through songs compared to traditional textbook audio materials. In addition, slow-tempo songs with clear lyrics were found to be the most effective, while fast or unclear songs caused some difficulties for students. In conclusion, English songs are an effective and engaging tool for improving students’ listening skills. Therefore, English teachers are encouraged to integrate suitable English songs into listening activities with appropriate guidance to create a more enjoyable and effective learning environment.

Abstract

This study analyzes conversational maxim violations in Elizabeth Olsen’s interview on Wild Card using Grice’s Cooperative Principle. The study aims to identify the types of maxim violations produced by the interviewee and to explain their pragmatic functions in an unscripted celebrity interview context. A qualitative descriptive method was applied. The data were obtained from a verbatim transcript of the publicly available YouTube interview Elizabeth Olsen on Marvel, being good at ignoring advice and her constant fear of death | Wild Card. The analysis focused exclusively on Elizabeth Olsen’s utterances. Data were examined through content analysis by identifying instances of flouting or violating the maxims of Quantity, Quality, Relation, and Manner and interpreting them based on conversational context and discourse function. The findings reveal that violations of all four conversational maxims occur systematically throughout the interview. Violations of the Maxim of Quantity appear most frequently, particularly through under-informative and delayed responses when addressing personal or sensitive topics. The Maxim of Quality is flouted through hyperbolic expressions used to convey emotional intensity. Violations of the Maxim of Relation occur when extended narratives initially appear irrelevant but later construct meaning through implicature. Violations of the Maxim of Manner are marked by hesitation and vagueness when discussing abstract ideas. These findings indicate that maxim violations function as strategic pragmatic resources for impression management, emotional expression, and audience engagement in digital celebrity discourse.

Abstract

Academic writing is a fundamental competency in higher education; however, many university students, particularly those learning English as a Foreign Language (EFL), continue to experience persistent difficulties in mastering this skill. Despite the growing body of research on academic writing challenges, limited attention has been given to students’ perceptions of institutional and instructional support in Indonesian higher education contexts. This study aims to explore the main challenges faced by undergraduate students in academic writing and to examine how they perceive the support provided by lecturers, peers, and academic resources. Employing a qualitative descriptive research design, data were collected through a structured questionnaire administered to 30 undergraduate students from the English Language Education Department at UHN I Gusti Bagus Sugriwa Denpasar. The questionnaire addressed linguistic challenges, writing strategies, affective factors, and perceived academic support. The data were analyzed descriptively using SPSS to identify dominant patterns and tendencies. The findings indicate that students commonly struggle with organizing ideas, using appropriate academic vocabulary, managing time effectively, and applying grammar and referencing conventions accurately. While lecturer guidance and peer feedback were generally perceived as supportive, access to institutional writing resources such as writing centers and workshops was considered limited or unclear by many students. These results suggest that academic writing difficulties are multidimensional, involving linguistic, cognitive, affective, and institutional factors. The study highlights the importance of structured writing instruction, continuous formative feedback, and enhanced institutional support systems to improve students’ academic writing competence. The findings contribute to the ongoing discussion on EFL academic writing pedagogy and provide practical implications for lecturers and higher education institutions.

Abstract

This study investigates the semantic functions and stylistic significance of synonyms and antonyms in the dramatic works of Karakalpak playwright K.Rakhmanov. Through a detailed lexical-semantic analysis, the paper explores how the author utilizes synonymous and antonymous expressions to enhance character portrayal, intensify dramatic conflict, and enrich the artistic language of his plays. The research identifies various forms of synonymy, including lexical, derivative, and borrowed word pairs, and demonstrates their role in avoiding redundancy and expanding the expressive capacity of the Karakalpak language. Similarly, antonyms—derived from nouns, adjectives, and adverbs—are shown to serve as essential tools for conveying contrast, highlighting thematic oppositions, and constructing dynamic dialogues. The paper also draws on comparative insights from Turkic linguistics and Karakalpak stylistic theory to contextualize Rakhmanov’s linguistic choices within the broader framework of modern Turkic dramaturgy. The findings suggest that the systematic use of semantic contrast not only reflects the lexical richness of the language but also serves as a hallmark of Rakhmanov’s distinctive literary style and cultural engagement. This study contributes to the ongoing exploration of stylistic devices in Turkic literature and affirms the value of lexical-semantic tools in the development of national literary identity.
