Calamity: A Journal of Disaster Technology and Engineering focuses on unique research on all facets of natural hazards, such as the prediction of catastrophic events, risk management, and the nature of natural and manmade hazard precursors. The effects on the environment are equally disastrous even if risks might come from a variety of sources and systems, including atmospheric, hydrologic, oceanographic, volcanologic, seismic, and neotectonic. This calls for tight collaboration between many scientific and operational disciplines in order to improve risk reduction. Risk assessment is included in the coverage of hazards in the atmospheric, climatological, oceanographic, storm surge, tsunami, flood, snow, avalanche, landslide, erosion, volcanic, man-made, and technology categories.

Abstract

Background: The increasing frequency and intensity of hydrometeorological disasters driven by climate change have heightened the vulnerability of persons with disabilities, particularly in urban flood-prone areas. Flooding is the most common disaster in Jakarta and disproportionately affects persons with disabilities due to barriers to accessing disaster information, evacuation routes, emergency shelters, and recovery resources. Although research on disaster preparedness among persons with disabilities has expanded, limited attention has been given to how environmental conditions shape preparedness. This study examines flood preparedness among persons with disabilities in flood-prone areas of East Jakarta through a multidimensional environmental perspective encompassing physical, social, and economic dimensions. Methods: This study employed a qualitative approach using in-depth interviews, focus group discussions (FGDs), observations, and document review. Data were collected from persons with disabilities, family members, community representatives, and local stakeholders and analyzed using thematic analysis. Findings: Disaster preparedness is shaped by the interaction of physical, social, and economic environments. Inaccessible evacuation routes, emergency shelters, and early warning systems constrain preparedness and response capacities. Social support from families, communities, and disability organizations facilitates access to information, evacuation, and emergency assistance, while limited economic resources reduce households’ capacity to prepare for, respond to, and recover from recurrent flooding. These dimensions are interconnected and collectively influence vulnerability and adaptive capacity. Conclusion: The study concludes that disaster preparedness among persons with disabilities is a multidimensional environmental phenomenon rather than solely an individual attribute. Novelty/Originality of this article: The novelty of this study lies in examining how the interactions among physical, social, and economic environmental dimensions shape disability-inclusive disaster preparedness in urban flood-prone communities.

Abstract

Background: Infant and young child feeding (IYCF) remains a critical yet often overlooked component of disaster preparedness and response, particularly for infants and young children who are highly vulnerable to nutritional disruption during emergencies. This study aims to analyze community perceptions and complementary feeding practices for children aged 6–23 months during the 2022 Cianjur earthquake in Indonesia, and to explore their implications for community-based disaster preparedness and resilience.  Methods: A qualitative case study design was used in Cijedil Village, one of the areas severely affected by the earthquake. The study involved 18 participants, consisting of nine mothers or caregivers of children aged 6–23 months and nine Posyandu cadres, selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through focus group discussions and analyzed using thematic analysis. Findings: Caregivers’ understanding of IYCF was limited and uneven. Although some caregivers were familiar with complementary feeding, many had incomplete knowledge of age-appropriate texture, feeding frequency, dietary diversity, food safety, and continued breastfeeding. During the early emergency phase, complementary feeding practices were shaped by survival needs and constrained by limited food access, damaged household facilities, and reliance on general food aid, adult meals, instant foods, and formula milk. The establishment of an IYCF kitchen improved access to more appropriate and diverse food for young children, but its delayed implementation revealed a preparedness gap in child-specific feeding support. Conclusion: Posyandu cadres as grassroots actors played  important roles through household outreach, caregiver communication, child identification, and food distribution. However, their role remained dependent on external support. This study recommends that future disaster preparedness should strengthen caregiver education, cadre capacity, child-specific data systems, information management for emergency nutrition services, integration of IYCF considerations into public kitchen and food assistance mechanisms. Novelty/Originality of this article: This study emphasizes IYCF in emergencies as both a response priority and a preparedness agenda, highlighting the importance of community empowerment in building nutrition-sensitive and resilient disaster management systems.

Abstract

Background: Sumatra has experienced increasing hydrometeorological disaster pressure, particularly floods and landslides, in areas connected to upstream watershed degradation and spatial governance problems. This study examines how disaster distribution, forest conversion discourse, and spatial planning governance interact in shaping flood and landslide risk along the Bukit Barisan corridor. Methods: Using a secondary-data based qualitative-spatial approach, this study analyzes the BIG-BNPB 2025 spatial disaster dataset obtained from the Tanah Air Indonesia geoportal and interprets it through policy documents and scientific literature on watershed degradation, environmental governance, and political ecology. Findings: The results show that hydrometeorological disaster areas are spatially concentrated in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra. Based on the compiled disaster polygons, flood areas dominate the observed disaster distribution, reaching approximately 3,980.56 km², while landslide and landslide-prone areas account for approximately 136.95 km² and 556.90 km², respectively. Aceh records the largest total disaster-affected area, reaching approximately 3,119.48 km², indicating a strong concentration of flood risk within upstream-downstream watershed systems. Conclusion: These findings suggest that flood risk in Sumatra should not be interpreted solely as a rainfall-driven natural phenomenon, but also as a governance-related risk amplified by reduced watershed carrying capacity, sedimentation, and weakened ecological control in spatial planning. Novelty/Originality of this article: This study argues that hydrometeorological disasters in Sumatra represent institutionally produced risks when legal and policy instruments fail to protect upstream ecological functions. Strengthening watershed-based policy audits, ecological licensing governance, and stricter control of upstream land conversion is therefore essential for long-term flood and landslide mitigation in Sumatra.
