Abstract

The pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris) (Hemiptera: Aphididae), is one of the key pests of pulse crops worldwide. Improper selection and inappropriate use of insecticides are major constraints. A field experiment was conducted at the Enewari Burtilk research station during the 2021 and 2022 Main cropping seasons to determine the appropriate spray frequency and an effective insecticide for managing pea aphid on lentil. A factorial combination of four spray frequencies and three insecticides, including an untreated check, was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The application of Diemethoate 40% EC in combination with two spray frequencies at 7-day intervals revealed the lowest Pea aphid population, which in turn resulted in higher grain yield (1647 kg ha-1), significant at p value < 0.05 than the untreated check (885 kg ha-1), higher net benefit, MRR, and residual value. Application of Dimethoate at 150 l/ha in two sprays at 7-day intervals is effective and economical for managing pea aphid on lentil. Therefore, the application of 40% EC in combination with two sprays at 7-day intervals under high infestation, and, as an alternative, profenofos 72% with three sprays at 7-day intervals, with timely spraying under good weather conditions using factory recommendations, is effective for the management of pea aphid on lentil.

Abstract

Plant-derived products are reported as potential eco-friendly alternatives to synthetic insecticides. Euphorbia ingens (Euphorbiaceae) is a latex-bearing species with reported insecticidal properties. Therefore, the present study aimed to evaluate the phytochemical composition of E. ingens latex and its insecticidal and repellent properties against Oryzaephilus surinamensis. The total terpenoid and alkaloid contents were estimated spectrophotometrically. Insecticidal activity was assessed using dipping and contact residual methods, whereas repellency was evaluated using a dual-choice apparatus. The total alkaloid and terpenoid content within E. ingens latex extracts were determined at 372.64 ± 80.76 mg atropine equivalents g-1 and 36.09 ± 1.08 mg linalool equivalents g-1, respectively. The insecticidal and repellent properties of E. ingens latex against O. surinamensis increased with increasing concentrations and time. The LC50 values of E. ingens latex against O. surinamensis were determined at 2.67 and 3.39% (v/v) using dipping and contact residual methods, respectively. The corresponding standard errors were evaluated at 2.67 ± 0.729 and 3.39 ± 1.460 (v/v), respectively. Furthermore, the repellency percentage at an exposure time of 3 hr ranged from 15.00 ± 5,77% at 15% concentration to 76.67 ± 8.82% at 85%. At 6 hr, the repellent activity further increased, ranging from the 20.00±5.77% to 83.33±8.82% across the same concentrations. E. ingens latex has alkaloid and terpenoid content and insecticidal and repellent activity against O. surinamensis.

Abstract

Aerial insects perform essential ecological functions and serve as indicators of environmental change, particularly in ecotone habitats such as cave entrances. Kiskendo Cave represents a transitional ecosystem between surface and subterranean environments with unique environmental characteristics. However, tourism activities may disrupt the ecological balance through changes in vegetation, artificial lighting, and other anthropogenic disturbances. This study aimed to analyze the diversity, evenness, species richness, and dominance of aerial insects and to examine their community structure and ecological roles in the area. Sampling was conducted on May 16, 2026, at the entrance of Kiskendo Cave using the sweep-net method on surrounding vegetation, and specimens were identified to species level based on morphological characteristics. Community structure was analyzed using Shannon-Wiener, Evenness, Margalef, and Simpson indices. The results showed that the community consisted of six insect orders dominated by Lepidoptera, with a Shannon-Wiener diversity index (H’ = 2.342) indicating moderate diversity, an evenness index (E = 0.9456) showing highly uniform distribution of individuals, a Margalef richness index (R = 3.789) indicating moderate species richness, and a Simpson dominance index (D = 0.102) indicating low dominance. These findings suggest that the aerial insect community in the study area remains relatively stable with a balanced community structure. Heterogeneous vegetation and supportive microclimatic conditions contribute significantly to the maintenance of insect diversity and ecosystem stability. Ecologically, the area supports multiple functional roles for insects, such as pollinators, herbivores, and predators, that interact to sustain ecosystem balance.

Abstract

Adult survival is an important life-history trait in fruit flies and can be influenced by dietary factors, including antioxidant nutrients. This study evaluated whether dietary L-ascorbic acid supplementation at 0.5% affects adult survival and lifespan of the pumpkin fruit fly, Zeugodacus tau, and whether the response differs between sexes. Newly emerged males and females were maintained on a control diet of yeast hydrolysate and sugar or the same diet supplemented with 0.5% L-ascorbic acid. Three replicate cages of 20 flies were used for each sex-by-treatment group, and survival was monitored for 51 days. Survival probabilities were compared with Kaplan-Meier analysis and the log-rank test. Restricted mean survival time was calculated, and Cox proportional hazards regression with robust standard errors clustered by replicate cage was used to estimate mortality risk. L-ascorbic acid significantly improved male survival by the log-rank test (p = 0.0422). Restricted mean survival time was 49.40 days in supplemented males and 47.63 days in control males. The mortality hazard was lower in supplemented males (hazard ratio = 0.449; 95% confidence interval = 0.251-0.804; p = 0.007). Female survival did not differ significantly between diets by the log-rank test (p = 0.4912), and the mortality hazard was not significantly associated with supplementation. Dietary L-ascorbic acid was associated with improved survival in male Zeugodacus tau under laboratory conditions, whereas a statistically significant survival response was not detected in females.
