Abstract

Macroinvertebrate diversity is one of the biologicals and ecological indicators that allow it to become a reference in determining water quality. This study aimed to inventory and study the diversity of macroinvertebrate species using the 1 x 1 m2 transect method along the Sundak Beach, Gunung Kidul, Yogyakarta. The research was conducted on Sunday, October 13th, 2019, with a quadratic transect method of 10 stations from the lowest low tide to the middle of the sea. The data obtained in this study was the result of macroinvertebrates species inventory in each sampling point and the number of individuals of each species. The data was then analyzed using the Shannon-Weiner diversity index (H'). The results showed 45 macroinvertebrate species with 2590 numbers of individuals were found on the Sundak Beach. The most common species were Gastropods with 16 species, while the most individual species were Ophiuroidea (730 species). The diversity index of 1.28351 indicates that the diversity of macroinvertebrates in Sundak Beach is categorized as medium diversity.

Abstract

Abstract

Bats (Chiroptera) are divided into two suborders (Yinpterochiroptera and Yangochiroptera). More than 50% of species of bats use caves as their roosting sites. Thus, they play a crucial role in the cave ecosystem. For that reason, they also exist as keystone species in the karst area. Gunung Sewu is one of the karst areas in Indonesia that best exemplifies tropical karst. Furthermore, Gunung Sewu is still at risk of habitat loss despite being designated as a Geopark. This study aimed to understand the diversity of bats that live in caves in the karst region of Gunung Sewu, specifically in four caves near Ngobaran Beach between April and June 2020. A harp net and misnet placed at the cave’s entrance were used to capture bats for data collection. After they were captured, the bats were identified using Morphometry and the Shannon-Wiener index. Through another index, Margalef index, the bat diversity in the four cave habitats was expressed, with a discovery that there are many different species. Based on the Jaccard similarity index, bats were categorized again using cluster analysis and the unweighted pair-group method using arithmetic averages (UPGMA). A total of nine species across five families were identified. The diversity of existing species variety was also recognized by analyzing the composition of the four cavern inhabitants. The four cave ecosystems’ bat diversity was divided into three categories: moderate variety, low similarity, and high species diversity. Except for Cekelan 1 Cave and Gebyog Cave (P=0.015), other variations did not demonstrate a meaningful difference (P0.05). This demonstrates how different each ecosystem is. Therefore, they could be classified as potentially spoiled habitats, demanding additional conservation efforts.

Abstract

Abstract

The behavioral analysis of weaver ants (Oecophylla smaragdina) was carried out by observing the behavior of weaver ants found on the Bougenville tree located at the researcher's house in the Temon area, Kulonprogo. Observations were made using the Ad Libitum, Scan Sampling, and Behavioral Sampling methods on the behavior of weaver ants (Oecophylla smaragdina) with each method being repeated three times. The purpose of this study was to determine the specific behavior of weaver ants (Oecophylla smaragdina) for 24 hours. The results showed that there were differences in the activity of weaver ants in the morning, afternoon, and evening. In the morning the weaver ants have not done much activity, so the observations show that 44% of weaver ants' activity is inactive. Other activities observed in the morning were walking (28%), communication (20%), and colonizing (8%). During the day observed transport (20.7%), walking into the nest (19%), grooming (17.2%), silence (16.4%), communication (11.2%), walking out of the nest ( 8.6%), colonies (5.2%), and nests (1.7%). In the afternoon the activity of weaver ants was observed to be less than during the day. The most observed activities were silence (36.4%), walking into the nest (24.5%), communication (14.5%), colonizing (11.8%), grooming (9.1%), and entering nest 3.6%. Silent activity is the most observed activity in this observation, resting activity is an important activity carried out by individuals after eating activities.
