Abstract

Background: Peat soil, with its acidic pH and high organic content, supports diverse microorganisms capable of producing secondary metabolites with potential antibacterial activity. These compounds may serve as new sources for antimicrobial development. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial potential of bacterial isolates from peat soil against Salmonella typhi and Extended-Spectrum Beta-Lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli.   Method: Bacterial isolation was performed using the pour plate method on Trypticase Soy Agar (TSA) medium. Antibacterial activity was assessed using the well diffusion method, while the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) were determined through broth dilution and spread plate techniques. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results: Fourteen bacterial isolates were obtained, all of which were Gram-negative bacilli. Isolate 5.1 exhibited the highest inhibitory activity, with inhibition zone diameters of 16.06 mm against ESBL-producing E. coli (intermediate category) and 7.53 mm against S. Typhi (resistant category). The MIC value for active isolates was 5 mg/mL; however, no bactericidal effect was observed within the tested concentration range (5–10 mg/mL). Conclusion: Peat soil bacteria demonstrated antibacterial potential, with three isolates showing activity against ESBL-producing E. coli and one isolate active against S. Typhi at 5 mg/mL. Further studies are required to identify the active compounds and elucidate their mechanisms of action.

Abstract

Background: Each year, approximately 150,000 individuals in the United States undergo lower extremity amputations. In Sudan, a range of rehabilitation services for amputation patients is offered through organizations in both governmental and public sectors. The National Authority for Prosthetics and Orthotics (NAPO) adopts a multidisciplinary rehabilitation approach to help amputation patients achieve independence in their daily lives. Objective: The aim of this study was to explore the knowledge and experience of lower limb amputees regarding physiotherapy rehabilitation at the NAPO institution. Method: The study employed a descriptive cross-sectional design involving 81 participants at NAPO. Data collection was carried out using a questionnaire comprising 29 questions. Data analysis was conducted using Microsoft Excel. All ethical considerations were thoroughly upheld. Results: A total of 74.1% of participants had diabetes mellitus, which was the main cause of amputation. Transtibial amputation was performed in 65.4% of the study population. For 44.4% of participants, the rehabilitation program started 6–12 months after surgery. A total of 88.9% of respondents did not perform any form of exercise before amputation surgery. Additionally, 65.4% of participants did not perform any self-management of their lower limb amputation scar at home. A total of 59.3% of participants perceived physiotherapy rehabilitation at NAPO as more effective than physiotherapy rehabilitation at home. Conclusion: The multidisciplinary rehabilitation program implemented at NAPO for lower limb amputees has proven to be highly effective. However, greater emphasis should be placed on pre-amputation rehabilitation, delayed post-amputation physiotherapy rehabilitation, addressing patients' psychological well-being, and providing education on home care and exercise routines.

Abstract

Background: Preeclampsia remains one of the leading causes of maternal morbidity and mortality worldwide. Emerging evidence suggests that psychological and behavioral factors, particularly anxiety and poor sleep quality, may contribute to the development of preeclampsia through neuroendocrine, inflammatory, and vascular mechanisms. However, evidence from primary healthcare settings in Indonesia remains limited. Objective: This study aimed to analyze the correlation between anxiety level and sleep quality with the incidence of preeclampsia among pregnant women attending the Pekauman Public Health Centre, Banjarmasin. Method: A quantitative analytical study with a cross-sectional design was conducted among 34 pregnant women with gestational age ≥20 weeks, selected using accidental (consecutive) sampling. Anxiety level was measured using the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HARS), sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), while preeclampsia was determined based on blood pressure measurement and proteinuria examination. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the Spearman Rank Correlation test with a significance level of p < 0.05. Results: Among the respondents, 61.8% experienced mild anxiety, 47.1% had poor sleep quality, and 38.2% were diagnosed with preeclampsia. A statistically significant strong positive correlation was found between anxiety level and preeclampsia incidence (r = 0.780; p < 0.001). In addition, poor sleep quality demonstrated a statistically significant very strong positive correlation with preeclampsia incidence (r = 0.835; p < 0.001). Pregnant women with severe anxiety and poor sleep quality were more likely to develop preeclampsia than those with lower anxiety levels and good sleep quality. Conclusion: Higher anxiety levels and poorer sleep quality were significantly associated with an increased incidence of preeclampsia among pregnant women.

Abstract

Background: Insufficient breast milk production is a major obstacle to exclusive breastfeeding. Lactation massage is a potential complementary intervention to increase milk production, but requires stronger scientific evidence. Objective: This study aimed to analyze the effect of lactation massage on increasing breast milk production in postpartum mothers. Method: The research design used a pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest. Participants consisted of 20 postpartum mothers in an independent midwifery practice area in Banjarmasin. Standardized lactation massage intervention was performed for 15 minutes, twice daily, for three consecutive days. Milk production was measured in milliliters (ml) using a manual breast pump before (first postpartum day) and after the intervention (third day). Data analysis used the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank test. Results: There was a significant increase in breast milk production after the intervention (p < 0.001). The average milk volume increased from 188.5 ± 40.95 ml to 342.5 ± 69.04 ml. Before the intervention, 100% of respondents had insufficient milk production (<250 ml). After the intervention, the distribution changed to 65% sufficient (250-400 ml) and 25% more (>400 ml). Conclusion: Lactation massage significantly increases breast milk production in postpartum mothers, thus it can be considered as a supportive intervention in postpartum care.

Abstract

Background: Perineal wounds are a common childbirth complication that significantly impacts maternal quality of life. In resource-limited settings such as plantation clinics, effective, safe, and affordable solutions are needed. Lemongrass decoction  as a traditional application holds potential as complementary therapy, but empirical evidence for postpartum perineal wounds remains limited. Objective: To determine the relationship between the administration of lemongrass decoction and the healing of perineal wounds in postpartum mothers at the PT. GSPP Polyclinic. Methods:  A quasi-experimental study with a non-equivalent control group design was conducted on 20 postpartum mothers divided into intervention and control groups. The intervention group received standard care plus topical application of lemongrass decoction twice daily, while the control group received standard care only. Wound healing was assessed based on clinical time (≤6 days for the 'Good' category) up to day 7. Data analysis used Fisher's Exact test and Odds Ratio (OR) calculation. Results: Most mothers who received lemongrass decoction (9 out of 10) experienced good healing (<6 days), while the majority who did not receive the intervention (7 out of 10) experienced poor healing (≥6 days). The relationship was statistically significant (p=0.020). Mothers who did not receive lemongrass decoction therapy had 21 times higher odds of experiencing poor healing (OR = 21.000; 95% CI: 1.777-248.103). Conclusion: The administration of lemongrass decoction has a significant and protective relationship with the acceleration of perineal wound healing in postpartum mothers.
