Abstract

The Megamas area encompasses 37 hectares of reclaimed beachfront land, hosting malls, hotels, and recreational spaces vital for bolstering tourism in Manado. Positioned facing Bunaken Island, Megamas stands as a must-visit destination for tourists. Leveraging Kevin Lynch's theory of city image formation, which comprises landmarks, paths, districts, nodes, and edges, this study aims to scrutinize the components shaping the urban identity of Megamas Manado. Employing qualitative methods, the research commenced with on-site observations to gain nuanced insights, followed by questionnaire administration to gauge public perceptions regarding the five elements of city image formation. The findings highlight Megamall as the predominant landmark, with adjacent public spaces serving as nodes, and corridors like Jl. Piere Tendean and thoroughfares such as Jl. E. E. Mangindaan and Jalan K.H. Abdurrahman Wahid acting as pathways. Moreover, shopping centers emerge as prominent districts within the Megamas area.

Abstract

Coastal regions represent transitional zones between terrestrial and marine ecosystems, rendering them particularly susceptible to changes. For tourism development to be viewed as a comprehensive and holistic endeavor, it must prioritize local ecology, especially amidst heightened productivity and activity. The distinctive ecological attributes of Pulisan Beach underscore the strategy to draw diverse tourists to North Sulawesi. The research methodology adopts a qualitative descriptive approach, entailing studies and analyses of environmental potentials through field observations. This survey type seeks factual information and employs Ecological Architecture theory for analysis. Identification and analysis of the coastal tourist area of Pulisan Beach are conducted using fundamental concepts and principles of Ecological Architecture. These principles emphasize holistic unity, drawing upon human experiences and interactions with the natural environment, viewing development as an ongoing process rather than a static reality, and advocating for cooperation between humans and nature to ensure mutual safety. The study on the developmental status of Pulisan Beach tourism area, utilizing an Eco-Architecture framework, concludes that it adheres to fundamental ecological concepts and principles. It yields insights into organizing the beach area as a sustainable tourism destination, emphasizing ecological preservation. The arrangement prioritizes principles of Eco-Architecture that are environmentally conscious, aiming to conserve the surrounding environment.

Abstract

Lighting constitutes a crucial element in spatial design aimed at enhancing user comfort. However, the efficacy of natural lighting in buildings remains suboptimal due to prevalent preferences for artificial illumination. This study identifies instances where the utilization of natural lighting, particularly sunlight, can be optimized, focusing on the Dean building of the Faculty of Engineering Unsrat, specifically the Library room, also known as the E-Library room. The objective is to investigate the most effective timing for natural lighting usage compared to artificial lighting from lamps.

Abstract

This study aims to assess the housing and settlement dynamics within the Kelurahan Ujung Menteng area. Findings reveal a range of challenges impeding housing and settlement progress, encompassing inadequate access to fundamental services like clean water, sanitation, and road infrastructure. Moreover, socio-economic factors significantly influence the community's quality of life. In light of these findings, the research advocates several strategic initiatives to enhance housing and settlement conditions in Kelurahan Ujung Menteng. These include enhancing the accessibility of essential infrastructure, implementing affordable housing schemes, and fostering community empowerment in decision-making processes concerning area development.

Abstract

In tropical countries like Indonesia, bamboo stands out as a sturdy and readily available building material due to its rapid growth. It's widely utilized in forming structural and architectural elements of buildings. However, due to the complexity of connections, bamboo has seen some replacement by newer materials like brick, steel, and concrete. Yet, the resurgence of bamboo usage aligns with the emergence of the green building concept, prioritizing environmentally friendly materials sourced from the local environment. Bamboo finds extensive application in tropical housing, serving as columns, roofs, and walls, often woven. This material effectively reduces indoor temperatures, providing occupants with thermal comfort. However, there's a gap in understanding regarding the use of bamboo as log-shaped walls or the role of cavities in bamboo stems in enhancing thermal comfort. This study adopts a quantitative approach, primarily through literature review, employing a descriptive presentation method. Bamboo plays a significant role in lowering room temperatures, particularly due to its cavity structure, which facilitates heat dissipation. This makes it suitable for use in tropical areas as a material for residential houses and other buildings.

Abstract

The phenomenon of gentrification, driven by the presence of the creative class, is a consequence of the global implementation of the Creative City concept. Bandung has adopted this concept, and one of the areas developed by the creative class is the Cihapit Market area. This article examines how the "creative" community, specifically Kopi Pasar Los Tjihapit, sustains its business amidst gentrification through a placekeeping strategy. Participatory qualitative descriptive research methods were employed to explore the role of architectural space as part of the placekeeping strategy. Five strategies were identified: 1) zoning to support maintenance, 2) collaboration spaces for various partnerships, 3) space flexibility through collective decision-making, 4) collaborative spaces to encourage community involvement, and 5) coordination of all aspects to preserve the public market character. In conclusion, the success of creative placekeeping strategies in architectural spaces combines non-technical aspects such as community enthusiasm with technical aspects such as the arrangement of physical architectural elements.
