Abstract

In recent years, the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) for Languages, which is a European reference in language issues, has received a lot of attention from foreign language learning activists, including Arabic teachers in various countries. Meanwhile, Arabic language teachers at Islamic schools in Indonesia prefer to use an independent curriculum based on the Decree of the Minister of Religion No. 183, 2019. This study attempts to analyze the content of Arabic books at Madrasah Aliyah (MA) which are based on KMA 183 and compare them with CEFR which focuses on 4 language skills: listening, reading, speaking, and writing. This study is a qualitative research by using a descriptive analytical approach and documentation techniques in data collection strategies. The result of this study is to classify language skill contents into the CEFR classification as follows: (1) the language skills content in the Class X MA Arabic language book fluctuates between levels A2 and B1, (2) while for class XI MA it is at levels A2, B1, and B2, (3) and for class XII MA it ranges between levels A2, B1, and B2 as well. From these results it can be understood that a small part of the contents of Arabic books at Madrasah Aliyah (MA) are at the beginner level (A2), while most of them are at the intermediate level B1 and B2, while normally the CEFR standard in language learning for the intermediate level must be at levels B1 and B2.

Abstract

This study investigates the attitudes of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) pre-service teachers toward the use of the KWL (Know-Want to know-Learned) strategy to enhance reading comprehension skills. The KWL strategy, a three-step framework designed to activate prior knowledge, set learning objectives, and reinforce retention, is commonly used to improve reading comprehension. Through a multi-case study approach, this research gathers data from interviews, classroom observations, and reflective journals to analyze pre-service teachers' perceptions of KWL’s effectiveness in diverse classroom contexts. Findings reveal that pre-service teachers view KWL as a valuable instructional tool that engages students actively and facilitates deeper understanding of texts. However, some challenges in implementation are noted, particularly regarding adapting KWL to varied reading levels and managing class time effectively. This study provides insights into the benefits and limitations of KWL as perceived by pre-service teachers, contributing to the development of effective reading instruction practices in EFL settings.

Abstract

This study explores the role of code-switching in bilingual classroom interactions, focusing on how switching between languages facilitates learning, social interaction, and cultural expression. Code-switching, the practice of alternating between languages within a conversation, is a common phenomenon in bilingual classrooms and serves multiple functions, including clarifying instructions, managing classroom discipline, and reinforcing identity. This research employs a qualitative approach, analyzing interactions within bilingual classrooms through recorded observations and interviews with students and teachers. Findings reveal that code-switching serves as a strategic tool for enhancing comprehension and engagement, enabling students to navigate complex linguistic and cultural contexts. Moreover, it supports peer collaboration and fosters an inclusive learning environment by validating students’ bilingual identities. By examining the pedagogical implications of code-switching, this study provides insights for educators in bilingual settings, highlighting the potential of code-switching to enrich both language acquisition and classroom dynamics.

Abstract

This study focuses on examining the extent to which communication, bureaucratic structure, and public support influence the performance of policy implementation related to the Tri Dharma of Higher Education. The findings indicate that communication, resources, bureaucratic structure, and public support significantly affect the implementation disposition. In particular, within the bureaucratic structure, public support has a notable impact on the core resources, namely lecturers or teaching staff. Furthermore, this study aims to analyze how communication and organizational culture influence leadership styles, the climate of collaboration and trust, as well as the organizational commitment of lecturers in private universities—especially in terms of harmonizing the implementation of the Tri Dharma. The research employs Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to explore causal relationships among variables. A survey method was applied in this research, with a population consisting of lecturers from private universities in Malang, Indonesia. A total of 100 respondents from 11 private universities were selected as the research sample. The results show a direct and significant positive effect of organizational culture and communication on leadership styles, collaborative climate, trust, and organizational commitment among university lecturers. However, there is no significant direct effect of communication on organizational culture. Nonetheless, organizational communication significantly and positively influences both the collaborative climate and lecturers’ organizational commitment.
