Abstract

The widespread use of Visual Display Terminals (VDTs) is associated with visual and musculoskeletal complaints, particularly Asthenopia, which may reduce productivity. A 32-year-old female financial worker presented with eye discomfort, including sore eyes, blurred vision, dizziness, and twitching on her left temple, particularly during extended computer use. The symptoms were relieved with rest. Most VDTs now use Light Emitting Diodes, which emit more blue light than LCDs and may cause eye fatigue and disrupt sleep. Currently, blue light filter lenses are available in the market, however, further study of existing scientific publications is necessary to ensure the effectiveness of blue light filter lenses, which are claimed to reduce asthenopia symptoms. This Evidence-based case report (EBCR) questions whether blue-light filter lens glasses alleviate symptoms of Asthenopia in workers A literature search in PubMed, Cochrane, and Embase identified Systematic Reviews, Meta-Analyses, and Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) evaluating blue light filter lenses in VDT users. These studies assessed objective measures (Critical Flicker Fusion Frequency—CFF) and subjective symptoms via questionnaires. The research papers were critically reviewed using the Oxford CEBM criteria for therapy (intervention) studies. Four Randomized Controlled Trial research articles met our criteria. However, the results did not provide conclusive evidence. There was no significant improvement in Critical Fusion Frequency (CFF), nor a reduction in subjective symptoms based on questionnaires. All studies varied in methodology, filter specifications, outcome tools, and subject characteristics. Therefore, blue light filter lenses cannot yet be clinically recommended for reducing asthenopia symptoms in VDT users. Further research is needed with a stronger design, larger sample size, and clearer standards and operational definitions.

Abstract

Background: About 10-15% of medical examinations of workers at upstream oil and gas companies are not conducted properly. In some cases, workers die at worksites. Many doctors carrying out the assessment lack the competency to assess occupational risks. In this study, we developed a scoring system for ‘fitness for work’ assessment, which can be used by trained doctors. Methods: Diagnostic testing was done with comparing the results of the determination screening fitness for work using a scoring system with the determine fitness for work results by Occupational Medicine Specialist as a gold standard in the same group. The entire 607 samples used in this study. The development of the scoring system for ‘fitness for work’ assessment used the Delphi method. This scoring system consists of three variables, i.e. health status, occupational risks, and referral time. ’Fitness for work’ status were determined by summing up the score from each variable and then compared with the gold standard. The outcome of this study are the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value of the scoring system. Results: The scoring system conducted by general practitioners in this study showed high sensitivity (98.8%), positive predictive value (99%), and specificity (79%). Conclusion: A scoring system based on health condition, occupational risks, and referral time can be used by doctors working in upstream oil and gas companies to assess ‘fitness for work’ of their offshore or remote onshore employees.

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to examine the effect of computer-mediated communication (CMC) on occupational positive mental health (OPMH) mediated by work-family enrichment (WFE) in workers in remote areas using the CMC, OPMH-40, and WFE questionnaires. Method: The latent variables in this study are CMC, OPMH, and WFE. The observed variables include all items from CMC, OPMH, and WFE. The sample technique used was total sampling, revealing that 349 workers in the project department of an oil and gas company located in the West Papua Province of Indonesia expressed their willingness to participate as research participants. To test research hypotheses using structural equation modeling (SEM) analysis by testing measurement and structural models. Results: The results showed that the effect of WFE as a mediator strengthened the influence of CMC on OPMH in comparison to the direct effect. Conclusion: This study explains the mechanism by which WFE, acting as a partial mediator, increases the effect of CMC on OPMH. The communication between workers and their families will increase their mental health as it serves as a means of support for workers who are geographically separated from their family. Company management needs to support employees in implementing CMC with their families to increase OPMH and WFE, as well as reduce the negative influence of work-to-family conflict, so that work productivity will increase.
