Abstract

The use of language that tends to be harsh, sarcastic, and emotional shows how today's young generation articulates their dissatisfaction with public figures, mostly driven by feelings of disappointment with the past of these figures. This case is also related to the domino effect phenomenon, where previous negative events or information about public figures can trigger strong reactions or protests from certain groups. The flower arrangement at UNAIR illustrates how critical literacy, in the context of Indonesian culture that is filled with values of politeness, can be developed as an important skill among young people. This paper examines the answer of the chairman of BEM FISIP UNAIR, Tuffahati Ulayyah from the Harian Surya video podcast script. This study highlights the importance of critical literacy in education, showing that a lack of ability to evaluate and express opinions ethically and responsibly contributes to weaknesses in student critique.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic forced educational institutions worldwide to rapidly transition from traditional face-to-face learning to online learning systems. This qualitative study aims to explore the perspectives of English Literature students at Universitas Kristen Indonesia regarding their experiences with online learning methods during the pandemic. Data were collected through interviews and field notes from 23 active students who experienced full online learning from 2020 until 2023. Using purposive sampling, the research focused on student responses to four main questions addressing their likes, dislikes, encountered barriers, and suggestions for improving online learning methods. The findings revealed that while students appreciated the flexibility, varied learning media, and opportunities for independent study, they also encountered numerous challenges, including internet connection problems, device limitations, excessive workloads, concentration difficulties, and monotonous teaching methods. The research highlights the importance of integrating interactive, flexible, and creative teaching approaches, improving digital literacy for both lecturers and students, and fostering positive lecturer-student interactions. This study contributes uniquely by providing in-depth qualitative insights from students within a specific program and institutional setting in Indonesia. It offers valuable recommendations for teaching practitioners and educational institutions to enhance the effectiveness and engagement of online learning systems, especially in similar crises or blended learning environments in the future.

Abstract

Anxiety disorders are psychological illnesses that affect a person's ability to function normally. If not treated properly, anxiety can develop into more serious mental illnesses such as depression. This psychological phenomenon is often explored in contemporary art forms, such as literature and music. One musician named Billie Eilish, who is known for her dark and passionate songs, often explores the theme of anxiety in her work. This research aims to examine the depiction of anxiety in Billie Eilish's Hit Me Hard and Soft album. The metaphorical symbols contained in the lyrical structure are found and analysed. Then, Psychoanalysis Theory by Sigmund Freud is used to show the manifestations of anxiety in the lyrics and how they relate to the themes of anxiety, uncertainty, and internal conflict. The method used in this research is qualitative research. It is used to analyse the lyrics of the selected songs, namely: Chihiro, Wildflower, Blue, and Bittersuite. The result of this research shows that there are indeed depictions of anxieties related to loss of beloved, uncontrolled thoughts, dilemma of desire and fear of living shown in Billie Eilish's music. This research highlights how music serves as a medium to reflect and address the emotions people often experience.

Abstract

This study analyzes Harold Pinter’s play The Birthday Party using Marxist literary criticism, especially Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels’ idea of class struggle from The Communist Manifesto (1848) and Georg Lukács’s perspective of reflectionism. The purpose of this research is to show how the play represents social disparity through its characters and conflicts. Stanley is portrayed as a powerless and marginalized individual, similar to the proletariat, while Goldberg and McCann represent authority and domination, similar to the bourgeoisie. Their use of language, intimidation, and control shows how power works in society. By combining Marx’s class conflict with Lukács’s view of literature as a mirror of society, this study connects the play with the social condition of post-war Britain, where people often felt alienated and insecure. The result of the analysis shows that The Birthday Party is not only an absurd drama but also a reflection of real social inequality and the struggles between different classes.

Abstract

Translating a text from English into Indonesian requires specific procedures to ensure meaning equivalence between the source and target texts. One such procedure is modulation or a shift in perspective. This descriptive research, which uses the content analysis method, illustrates the use of modulation in translating English complex sentences into Indonesian sentences found in Agatha Christie’s novel Third Girl and its Indonesian translation. The objectives are to gain a deep understanding of the modulation subtypes used and their impact on meaning equivalence. The findings revealed that the translator mainly used obligatory modulation (61%) rather than free modulation (39%). Obligatory modulation includes subtypes such as reversal of terms, particular for general and vice versa, explicative modulation, passive for active, negation of opposite, and part for whole. Free modulation includes concrete for abstract, effect for cause, negation of opposite, change of symbols, and exchange of intervals for limits (time). The use of these subtypes results in changes in tone, nuance, the focus of meaning, meaning reduction, meaning addition, and cultural adaptation. These changes support meaning equivalence by producing a translation that is idiomatic, natural, acceptable, and culturally appropriate in the target language.

Abstract

This study explores how the film Carry-On (2024) is structured narratively and how its protagonist develops throughout the story using Syd Field’s Three-Act Structure and Lajos Egri’s Character Dimensions. As a thriller that follows Ethan Kopek, a young TSA officer dragged into a dangerous situation, the film presents a clear progression of conflict that makes it suitable for narrative and character analysis. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method by observing selected scenes, dialogues, and character interactions that show Ethan’s emotional, social, and psychological growth. The findings reveal that the film follows Field’s structure through the Setup, Confrontation, and Resolution, with each stage placing different pressures on Ethan that influence his decisions. Egri’s dimensions—physical, sociological, and psychological—also help illustrate how Ethan transforms from an anxious and overwhelmed officer into someone more confident, responsible, and emotionally grounded. Overall, this study concludes that combining narrative structure and character dimensions provides a clearer understanding of how the film builds tension and how the protagonist evolves throughout his journey.

Abstract

This research examines the lyrics of Olivia Rodrigo’s SOUR album through Michael Riffaterre’s semiotic framework and Anna Freud’s defense mechanisms, complemented by Vaillant’s hierarchy. The research aims to identify both literal and connotative meanings by applying heuristic and hermeneutic readings, while also uncovering the unconscious emotions represented through figurative devices such as metaphor, irony, imagery, symbolism, and rhetorical expressions. Furthermore, the study explores the defense mechanisms reflected in the lyrics as psychological responses to emotional experiences such as heartbreak, jealousy, denial, and loss of self-worth. The findings indicate that the lyrics in SOUR employ intricate figurative language that functions as an expressive medium for emotional complexity and demonstrate the presence of defense mechanisms across immature, neurotic, and mature levels. These results show that popular music lyrics can serve as a rich academic object for linguistic and psychological inquiry, contributing to the advancement of literary studies, semiotics, and psychological criticism within the landscape of contemporary popular culture. Keywords: Unconscious emotions, defense mechanism, figurative language, semiotics.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract This study analyzes Cassandra Webb’s search for identity and defense mechanisms she employs in the film Madame Web (2024) through Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic theory. Focusing on the structure of the id, ego, and superego, the research examines how Cassandra unconscious conflict and anxieties shape her behaviour as she struggles to adapt to her sudden clairvoyant abilities and the responsibilities attached to them. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the study collects data from selected scenes, dialogues and character interactions that reveal Cassandra’s internal tension and coping strategies. These data are then interpreted using Freud’s concepts of personality structure and defense mechanisms. The findings show that Cassandra’s identity formation is closely tied to the dynamic interaction between her id’s instinctual impulses, her ego’s reality-based considerations, and her superego’s moral demands. Throughout the film, she frequently relies on defense mechanisms such as denial, rationalization, and projection to manage fear, guilt and overwhelming responsibility. These mechanisms both protect and delay her psychological growth until she gradually integrates her powers into a more coherent sense of self. Overall, the study demonstrates that Freud’s psychoanalytic framework remains effective for explaining the psychological depth of contemporary superhero characters and highlights how Madame Web (2024) portrays inner conflict and identity negotiation beyond its surface-level narrative. Abstract

Abstract The exploitation of nature and its impact on animal extinction is a common occurrence due to excessive modernization. However, this issue is sometimes overlooked by the mainstream media and public discourse. In this case, literature often emerges to document or even voice criticism of the phenomenon of environmental destruction. Several works that voice criticism of the phenomenon of ecosystem destruction and animal extinction due to modern culture are the short stories of Seno Gumira Ajidarma (SGA). In this study, the author takes three SGA short stories entitled “Macan” (Tiger), “Cintaku Jauh di Pulau Komodo” (My Love is Far Away on Komodo Island), and “Badak Kencana” (Golden Rhinoceros). This study will be conducted using an ecocriticism approach, focusing on the examination of totems as key symbols in the three short stories. To dissect the meaning of totems, the concepts of totems, archetypes, and other concepts in Carl Gustav Jung's analytical psychology are also used. The findings of this study are that totems and their symbolism are narratives in short stories that voice criticism of the exploitation of nature and excessive hunting, which destroy the balance and culture of environmental preservation in the settings of the three short stories.
