Abstract

The Sudan civil war, designated by the United Nations as the world's largest humanitarian crisis, has generated extensive international media coverage yet remains critically under-examined in discourse scholarship regarding how conflict knowledge is constructed and whose voices are authorized to define truth. This study employs Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) integrated with Critical Discourse Analysis to investigate how BBC Indonesia and BBC International construct agency distribution and epistemic authority in explainer articles about the Sudan conflict. Through qualitative transitivity and modality analysis of two comparable November 2025 articles, this research examines how linguistic choices reveal ideological positioning regarding who acts, who suffers, and whose knowledge counts as legitimate. Findings demonstrate systematic patterns across both outlets which are passive constructions and nominalization obscure military actors' responsibility for civilian casualties; asymmetric agency attribution constructs RSF as violent aggressors while rendering structural dimensions invisible; and a three-tier epistemic hierarchy privileges Western institutional voices (US, HRW) with definitive modality, grants international bodies (UN) investigative authority, while relegating local Darfuri voices to subjective belief-based positioning. Critically, these patterns converge regardless of outlets' geographic positioning, Indonesian regional versus British global, revealing what Foucault identifies as "capillary power": the circulation of Western-centric knowledge frameworks through institutionalized journalistic norms that transcend individual bias or national interest. This convergence demonstrates that transforming conflict representation requires not merely diversifying media sources but fundamentally challenging the embedded "regimes of truth" determining whose knowledge is recognizable as legitimate in global journalism, with implications extending beyond African conflict reporting to broader questions of epistemic justice in international media

Abstract

This research focuses on analyzing the types and functions of taboo words used in the Kissing Booth’s Script Movie. In this research, the researcher employed the Batistella classification (2005) and Jay (1996). The objective of the study is to find the types and functions of taboo words used in the Kissing Booth’s Script Movie. The researcher used descriptive qualitative in analyzing data. The data of this research were the character’s utterances in the Kissing Booth Script Movie. The instrument of this research is the researcher herself. The researcher collected the data by downloading the script, observing, documenting, analyzing the types and functions of taboo words, and classifying the types of taboo words. After getting the data, the researcher classified and analyzed the type of taboo words by each character. At the end of the analysis, the researcher concluded based on the types of taboo words and the functions of taboo words used. The result of this research showed 53 data containing all types of taboo words. Slang is the most frequently used with 18 utterances. Then, the second is profanity with 7 utterances. The third is obscenity with 6 utterances and vulgarity also cursing with 5 utterances. While, epithets, blasphemy, and insult have 3. Moreover, scatology has 2 utterances, and the less frequent is slur with 1 utterance. Thus, the researcher concluded that slang is the highest rank of taboo word employed by the characters of the Kissing Booth’s Script Movie. Meanwhile, the lowest type of taboo word employed by the characters of that film is a slur. This study highlights the importance of teaching students about taboo words and their functions through pragmatic competence. Teachers can use film excerpts to illustrate politeness strategies and encourage class discussions on language use in social contexts. Media literacy should also be integrated into language teaching, helping students analyze how films shape language, reflect social norms, and influence identity. This approach enhances critical thinking and prepares students for real-life communication

Abstract

This study aims to analyze how the rhetorical elements of credibility, emotion, and logic are realized in tourism promotion vlogs and how their integration contributes to persuasive effectiveness in recreational tourism promotion. The research employed a qualitative approach with design focusing on tourism promotion vlogs about Kamadu Beach. The participants consisted of 24 respondents who had no prior familiarity with the destination. Data were collected through the selection of tourism vlogs from digital platforms and interviews guided by a questionnaire to capture respondents’ perceptions. The data were analyzed using a rhetorical triangle framework by examining narrative and visual elements to identify persuasive strategies. The results show that emotional appeal is the most dominant element in tourism promotion vlogs and plays a significant role in attracting audience attention and increasing engagement. However, logical information supports rational decision-making, while credibility strengthens audience trust in the content. The study concludes that effective tourism promotion vlogs require a balanced integration of emotional appeal, logical information, and credible presentation to enhance persuasive impact and encourage actual tourist visits. The findings imply that content creators and tourism promoters should strategically combine these rhetorical elements to achieve more effective digital tourism promotion.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the translation strategies of idiomatic expressions in the subtitles of the film The Intern using Baker's (1992) theory of idiomatic expression translation strategies, which includes four strategies: using idioms with the same meaning and form, using idioms with the same meaning but different forms, translating through paraphrasing, and translating through omission. The research method used was descriptive qualitative with data sources in the form of English subtitles and their Indonesian translations. From 25 idiom data, three strategies were found to be used: the use of idioms with the same meaning and form (4 data), the use of idioms with the same meaning but different forms (9 data), and translation through paraphrasing (12 data). The omission strategy was not found. The results of the study show that the paraphrasing strategy is the most dominant because it is considered more flexible in adjusting to the target language context. Further research is expected to analyze different objects and consider aspects of procedure and translation quality.
