Abstract

A classroom functions as a place for learning and teaching activities. To accommodate these funcions, it is important to consider the lighting quality that should meet the standard requirement for the learning activities. Initial measurements of the light intensity of the classrooms in SMA Negri 9 Surabaya show that some of these classrooms have not met the standard requirement. This research used the Dialux v. 4.8 software to investigate and discover the best lighting quality that should be achieved according to ligthing standards. Results show that the type of lamp used influences the lighting conditions of a classroom. Meanwhile different interior elements, furniture materials and finishings also affect the distribution of light which produce different light reflections that influence the comfort level of the users. The use of colour on the interior elements and furnitures also affect the light intensity in which every colour produces different light reflections and interior atmoshphere.

Abstract

The Ganjuran Church, a parish church located in South of Yogyakarta, is an interesting object related to typological studies. This study reveals that since its first establishment, Ganjuran Church has experienced three phases of development. From those phases, buildings in Ganjuran complex can be compiled into five types: kampong, limasan and joglo houses, Javanese Hindu-Budhism temple and Roman basilica. Meanwhile, architectural transformations occurs in the monument and church areas. This study also interprets that typological analysis is not only able to reveal architectural transformations, but also cultural transformations. In this context, typology is not only related to technical matters such as form and construction but also non-technical matters such as cultural perception and symbolism.

Abstract

A food court is an important public facilty in a shopping centre. Apart from its generally large capacity and variety of cuisine served, the design of most foodcourts are also generally attractive.Their interior designs are able to affect the atmoshphere and mood of visitors. Many foodcourts in today’s malls adopt the postmodern style in their design, for instance, the Galaxy Mall in Surabaya, which will be the object for case study in this research. The objective of this research is to investigate the implementation of the Post modern style in the interior elements of the food court that will be discussed in detail. The research findings show that the use of Post modern style can be seen in the spatial arrangement, interior elements such as floors, walls and ceilings, furnitures as well as decorative elements such as colour and material. All these elements adopted the Post Modern style in terms of ideology, concept, aim as well as design methodology. The concept of Contradiction has been applied in the two areas of the food court.

Abstract

Huria Kristen Batak Protestant is the largest Protestant church of the Lutherian denomination in the Batak society that was historically formed as a result of the RMG mission (Reinische Missions-Gesselschaft) from Germany. Apart from evangelising, their missions also brought in the building typologies of RMG churches in Germany to their Batak land, which can evidently be sensed from the HKBP church in Pearaja, Tarutung, Sumatera Utara. HKBP Pearaja has thus been a typological reference for many HKBP church builders throughout Indonesia, including HKBP Surabaya, in terms of their architectural and interior designs. This research is a qualitative study using the descriptive method of analysis and the approach of semiotics. The approach was adopted by Charles Sanders Peirce and this has been combined with theological intepretation to discover the relationships between the signs and symbols observed in the altar of HKBP Surabaya. This apprach emphasizes on the process of Semiosis that has taken place in the design of the church?s altar resulting in the formation of icons, index and symbols in the overall arrangement of the altar. Icons appear to be the most dominant form of signs and thus it can be concluded that the supportive elements of the altar that consist of the altar table, cross, cloth, candle and the ??(Alfa-Omega) symbol possess iconic relationships with the church altar of HKBP Surabaya. These signs themselves convey the theological messages of: ?God?s Ark?, ?Holy Communion?, ?Christianity?, ?Law of Love? and the ?Holy Trinity of Father, Son and Holy Spirit.?

Abstract

Dewa Ndaru Culture Resto is a restaurant designed with different interior styles to invite visitors to enjoy the cultural values and nostalgic experience of the past. Although the various styles have been implemented separately in terms of location, the design of the restaurant reflects a connection between the form and colour used in the interior space. The objective of this research is to analyse the combination of styles and how they have been applied in order to gain more knowledge regarding design styles, particularly in this restaurant. It is a qualitative mode of research which will be descriptive in its critical analysis to obtain verbal data and will depend on comparisons in which the findings would be in the form of a conclusion drawn to answer the summary of issues addressed previously. From the research findings, it has been found that Dewa Ndaru Restaurant has adopted cultural values from Traditional Java, Chinese houses, Colonial buildings and Modern restaurant designs.

Abstract

One of the methods to increase the qualitiy of human resources is to improve education. As a formal pre-school education center, a kingergarden can contribute in building a strong foundation in a child’s development in terms of character, behaviour, knowledge, skill and creativity. Accomodating the activities and designing the facilities in the learning spaces are thus important factors to consider. The objective of this research is thus to investigate whether the interior design of the kindergardens in Surakarta have been designed to accommodate the learning activities effectively. TK Negeri Pembina Kecamatan Banjarsari and TK Kristen Kalam Kudus Surakarta have been chosen as case studies as they are the largest public and private schools repsectively. The research findings conveyed that the preschools in Surakarta have considered the learning aims adopted from the Deparment of National Education along with additional curriculums adapted by the schools’ foundations when desigining the interior of the learning and playing spaces.
