Abstract

Background: Anemia during pregnancy is a global health concern that affects both maternal and fetal well-being. Iron supplementation is the primary treatment. However, its effectiveness is often hindered by poor adherence due to gastrointestinal side effects. Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.) essential oil has demonstrated antioxidant and hematopoietic potential, suggesting its utility as a complementary therapy. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of inhaled rosemary essential oil in improving hemoglobin concentration and reducing anemia releated symptoms among second trimester pregnant women with mild to moderate anemia. Methods: A quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control group design was utilized with 60 pregnant women who were randomly assigned to intervention (n=30) and control (n=30) groups. The intervention group inhaled rosemary essential oil for 15 minutes twice day throughout a duration of four weeks, while both groups continued iron supplementation. Hemoglobin levels were measured pre and post intervention using a hematology analyser, and anemia symptoms (fatigue, dizziness and shortness of breath) were assessed using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS). Results: The intervention group showed a significantly greater increase in hemoglobin levels compared to the control group (+1,20 g/dL vs. +0,40 g/dL; p<0,001), indicating improvement in clinical symptoms of anemia. Conclusions: Inhalation of rosemary essential oil signicantly improves hemoglobin concentration and alleviates anemia related symptoms in pregnant women. It offers a safe, natural and non-invasive complementary approach to enhance maternal health during pregnancy.

Abstract

Background: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a global health threat, with a death toll reaching 1.3 million. Indonesia has set a target to eliminate TB by 2030, with a treatment success rate of 90%. However, the achievement at Licin Public Health Center in Banyuwangi Regency in 2023 was only 76%, indicating the need for performance evaluation. This study aims to describe the performance of Licin Public Health Center in TB control based on the Malcolm Baldrige Criteria for Performance Excellence (MBCfPE). Methods: This study employed a descriptive quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design. The research sample consisted of 12 TB officers and 29 TB patients. Data were collected through questionnaires completed by the respondents and analyzed using the Baldrige Assessment. Results: The results showed that the performance of Licin Public Health Center was at the benchmark leader level with an excellent rating, achieving a score of 796.3 points out of a possible 1,000. The highest percentage score was found in the Workforce Focus category, while the lowest was in Strategic Planning, indicating strengths in human resource management and areas for improvement in long-term program planning. Conclusions: The performance of Licin Public Health Center in tuberculosis control ranks as superior among similar organizations, both at the regional and national levels. Nevertheless, improvements are still needed in areas such as organizational structure, strategy, patient satisfaction, and budget utilization to support the sustainable success of TB treatment.

Abstract

Background: Infant growth and development represent fundamental indicators of child health and well-being. Data from the 2022 Indonesian Nutrition Status Survey indicate a persistent prevalence of underweight among children, recorded at 17.0% in 2021 and slightly increasing to 17.1% in 2022. One approach commonly employed to support infant weight gain is baby massage. This study aimed to examine the effect of baby massage on weight gain in infants aged 3 to 12 months at the private midwifery practice (PMB) of Bd. Lialut Iftiyah, S.Keb, located in Malang District, Indonesia. Methods: This study employed a quasi-experimental design with a non-equivalent control group approach. A total of 36 infants aged 3 to 12 months were selected through random sampling and subsequently assigned to either the intervention group or the control group. Data were analyzed using a paired t-test. Results: The results revealed an average weight gain of 332 grams in the intervention group and 219 grams in the control group. A statistically significant difference was observed between the pretest and posttest measurements in both the intervention group (p = 0.00) and the control group (p = 0.00). Conclusion: These findings suggest that while both groups experienced weight gain, the increase was more substantial in the intervention group, indicating a greater effect of baby massage on infant weight gain.

Abstract

Background: Hypertension is a condition in which blood pressure is higher than normal values of ≥140/≥90 mmHg. Effective blood pressure control is the main goal to prevent and treat hypertension. In addition to pharmacological approaches, blood pressure can be controlled with non-pharmacological approaches such as acupressure therapy. This study aims to determine the effect of acupressure therapy at the SP6 and LI4 points on reducing blood pressure in elderly individuals with hypertension. Methods: This study was designed with a quasy-experiment with the type of research pre and post-test with control group with purposive sampling technique. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon test and the Mann-Whitney test. The population amounted to 81 elderly people with hypertension with the number of samples used in this study as many as 46 elderly samples with hypertension (23 in intervention group and 23 in control group). The majority of respondents were aged 65-69 years, female, worked as traders, and had elementary school education and did not go to school. Blood pressure was measured using a sphygmomanometer. Acupressure on SP6 and LI4 points was given to the intervention group for 3 weeks with a frequency of 2 times in 1 week, while the control group was given conventional treatment. Results: The results of the post-test difference in blood pressure between the intervention group and the control group with the Mann Whitney U-Test test showed a p-value = 0.000 (p <0.05), it can be concluded that there is a significant difference between the intervention group and the control group. Conclusions: The study concludes that there is an effect of acupressure therapy at point SP 6 and LI 4 on lowering blood pressure in the elderly with hypertension. It is hoped that the results of the study can be used as an alternative therapy in lowering blood pressure.

Abstract

The consumption of iron supplement tablets (TTD or “Tablet Tambah Darah”) is crucial for adolescent girls to prevent anemia. Irregular intake of these supplements can lead to increased rates of anemia. In Pesawaran District, the prevalence of TTD distribution among adolescent girls is 54.75%, which falls short of the national target of 75%. This study aimed to analyze the management of the TTD program as an effort to reduce the prevalence of anemia among junior and senior high school girls in Pesawaran District in 2025. This qualitative study was conducted in Pesawaran District, involving key informants such as nutrition program officers and junior and senior high school students. Data were collected through in-depth interviews conducted from March 3–25, 2025. The results indicate that while the Health Department shows strong commitment, regulatory frameworks have not yet been established. Planning has been carried out, including intervention design, hemoglobin screening, and logistics procurement. However, implementation faces challenges due to the absence of formal regulations and a lack of collaboration between the Health and Education Departments, resulting in limited school support. The involvement of teachers, particularly UKS (school health unit) teachers, remains low. In terms of evaluation, program monitoring has been conducted using checklists and pocketbooks to track student compliance. Follow-up actions include addressing implementation barriers through mini workshops aimed at formulating improvement plans. It is recommended that the Head of the Pesawaran Health Office initiate co-management of the TTD program. Overall, the TTD program in Pesawaran District demonstrates a strong commitment from the health sector but requires strengthened regulations and inter-sectoral collaboration to more effectively reduce anemia prevalence among adolescent girls.

Abstract

Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus in the elderly can cause increased blood sugar levels that risk damaging various body systems. One natural alternative to help lower blood sugar levels is to utilize bay leaves, which are known to have active ingredients that have the potential to be antidiabetic. This study aims to determine the effect of boiled bay leaves on blood sugar levels in elderly people with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Methods: The study used a pre-experimental design with a one group pre and post test design approach. The study population was elderly people with type 2 diabetes mellitus in the Abang II Health Center, Karangasem, Bali Province, Indonesia with a sample size of 49 people selected using the proportional stratified random sampling technique. Respondents were given an intervention in the form of consuming 220 ml of boiled bay leaf water every morning before eating for seven consecutive days. The bay leaves used were old leaves weighing 2 grams. Blood sugar levels were measured using the Easy Touch tool, with established standard procedures. Results: The results showed that before the intervention, all respondents had random blood sugar levels >200 mg/dL. After the intervention, 93.9% of respondents experienced a decrease in blood sugar levels to <200 mg/dL. The paired t-test statistical test showed a p value = 0.001 (p <0.05), which means there was a statistically significant decrease in blood sugar levels. Conclusions: The conclusion of this study is that boiled bay leaf water is effective in lowering blood sugar levels in elderly people with type 2 diabetes. It is recommended to use it as a safe and natural additional therapy, while continuing to consult a doctor for further monitoring.
