Abstract

As a cultural product of one of the world’s most influential media corporations, the film represents a significant departure from the Eurocentric depictions traditionally associated with Disney princesses. This research aims to identify inclusion and diversity in representing multiculturalism in the movie adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s work “The Little Mermaid”. This study employs descriptive qualitative research to explore and analyze the representation of diversity and multiculturalism in the film adaptation of “The Little Mermaid 2023.” Descriptive qualitative research is chosen for its ability to provide detailed descriptions and interpretations of cultural representations while using semiotic theory and film adaptation theory. The result shows that there are differences through the narrative element in both works, especially plot, settings, theme, character, and writing style. Through a semiotic lens, this inclusion of diversity can be seen from the casting of the characters namely, Ariel, Ariel’s sisters, and The Queen. By utilizing the original text and adapting it to a live-action movie, Marshall has contributed to the discussion of multiculturalism to represent the lack of inclusion in diversity and representation derived from the original text through his decision to cast actors and actresses of diverse races while still maintaining the elements of the original text. Its representation of diversity has the potential to challenge entrenched stereotypes and inspire a new generation of media consumers to demand more inclusive storytelling. This research underscores the importance of critically examining how iconic narratives are adapted to address issues of representation.

Abstract

This study examines the portrayal of androgyny and its contribution to a non-traditional family structure in the film Hidden Figures, focusing on the African-American couple, the Jacksons. Traditional gender roles, often reinforced by media representations, contribute to societal expectations and limitations placed on individuals within families. However, evolving societal norms challenge these traditional depictions, creating a need for exploring alternative family structures and gender expressions in media. This research addresses this gap by analyzing how the film Hidden Figures presents a nuanced depiction of an African-American family navigating gender roles in the mid-20th century. Utilizing the film theory of David Bordwell and Kristina Thompson, coupled with Betty Friedan's liberal feminist theory, this qualitative study employs descriptive analysis to uncover how androgyny manifests in the characters of Mary and Levi Jackson. The findings reveal that both characters successfully maintain their feminine and masculine characteristics in both domestic and public spheres, fostering a shared responsibility in housework, childcare, and income generation. This shared responsibility allows Mary to pursue a fulfilling career while Levi breaks free from the traditional "breadwinner" stereotype. The Jacksons' dynamic exemplifies a gender role revolution, demonstrating how shared support and equality can create a harmonious family structure free from gender role polarization. This study contributes to a broader understanding of evolving family dynamics and the potential for media representations to challenge traditional gender norms. The implications extend to discussions surrounding gender equality, family structures, and the portrayal of African-American families in film.

Abstract

This research aims to explain and describe the eco-lexicon that exists in one of the “Reach for a Greener Tomorrow” campaign posts in @sayapilihbumi Instagram posts that contain eco-lexicon and have issues related to the environment. The theory used in this research is Greening the media (Maxwell et al., 2013) which states that Greening media is a study that begins by acknowledging a historic responsibility to face the challenge of the ecological crisis as a fundamental challenge to critical scholarship in the field and uses an ecolinguistics perspective approach, in the form of analyzing ideological, sociological and biological meaning in eco-lexicons in @sayapilihbumi posts. The   method   used   in   data   collection   is   documentation   and   observation   on   the @sayapilihbumi Instagram account. The result of this research indicates that the eco-lexicons serve not only as a means of communication but also as tools for fostering environmental awareness and encouraging sustainable practices among followers. The findings suggest that social media campaigns can effectively influence public perceptions and behaviors regarding environmental issues, thereby contributing to a broader movement towards sustainability. This study underscores the importance of language in shaping ecological consciousness and advocates for the continued use of social media as a platform for environmental advocacy. By understanding the meanings behind eco-lexicons, stakeholders can better design campaigns that resonate with audiences and promote actionable change.

Abstract

This research reveals the discrimination discourse surrounding the Indonesian court's treatment of environmental activists, specifically focusing on the case of Daniel Frits, who was jailed for exposing illegal shrimp farms in Karimunjawa. The primary objective of this study is to reveal how the media, particularly Mongabay.com, represents the court's actions and the implications of this representation for environmental activism in Indonesia. Using a critical descriptive method and qualitative data, the research analyzes the language and source selection in the article titled "Indonesian Court Jails Environmentalist for Flagging Illegal Farms in Marine Park," published on April 4, 2024. Moreover, Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis uses as approach in this research. The findings indicate that the language used in the article portrays the Indonesian court negatively, suggesting a bias against activists who challenge illegal environmental practices. The analysis reveals that the court's actions are framed as unjust, contributing to a broader narrative that criminalizes environmental advocacy. This representation not only affects public perception of the legal system but also undermines trust in judicial processes related to environmental protection. The implications of this research highlight the significant role of media discourse in shaping public understanding of environmental issues and the legal challenges faced by activists. This study emphasizes the need for greater awareness and support for activists working to protect Indonesia's natural resources.
