Abstract

The text emphasizes the significance of enhancing writing skills among EFL (English as a Foreign Language) students through active learning and meaningful engagement, advocating for a student-centered approach that fosters idea development through discussion and writing. It highlights the challenges faced by Grade 11 EFL students at Singapore School Medan, particularly regarding grammar mastery and practice opportunities, revealing that while 62% of students exhibit good writing skills, a notable portion struggles due to limited engagement and reluctance to communicate in English. The study suggests utilizing news media and guided practice to boost motivation and creativity, ultimately calling for more effective teaching strategies to improve writing outcomes. The sample of this study is 15 students. The researchers used purposive sampling to achieve the aim of the study. To collect the Semi-structured interview is a form of Interview. The finding of this research showed that in the pre-test, the students got a mean score of 43,75. In cycle 1, the mean score is 48,6.  In cycle 2, the mean score is 60,5 or categorized as moderate. In the post-test, the mean score is 75,8 categorized as good. Topic writing skills in EFL students by providing one learning topic makes students active in constructing meaning, text, dialogue, and experience, in expressing their ideas clearly at SMA Singapore School Medan

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find out the effect of applying TikTok application in vocabulary learning. This uses a quantitative study, which is a quasi-experimental method. Data from this study are collected and obtained through tests and observation. The subjects of this study are X-IPA with samples X-IPA 8 as the experimental group and X-IPA 5 as the control group, totaling 74 students who were selected by random technique. Tests are conducted by pre-test and post-test, then observation by observing and recording samples. The result of the study shows that using the TikTok application significantly affects students’ vocabulary mastery. This can be seen from some facts, such as 1) the Mean post-test of experimental after treatment is 83,03, while control is 58,92, 2) the Standard deviation post-test of experimental after treatment is 9036,97, while control is 2772,76, 3) T-count after treatment is 5,81, meanwhile t-table level 0,05 is 1,666. Thus 5,81 > 1,666). This study shows that TikTok applications have a good influence on vocabulary learning.

Abstract

Animation video is an alternative media to teach listening at senior high-level students. The purpose of this study to improve the listening skill of eleventh-grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Stabat at Kabupaten Langkat in the academic year 2024/2025. This study used a classroom action research method by applying animation video as an alternative teaching media. The population of this study is the eleventh-grade students consists of ten classes with a total number is 351 students. The sample of this study is 36 students (XI IPA 1). The researchers used purposive sampling to achieve the aim of study. To collect the data the researchers distributed multiple choice of listening test. The finding of this research showed that in pre-test, the students got mean score 43,75. In cycle 1, the mean score is 48,6. In cycle 2, the mean score is 60,5 or categorized moderate. In post-test, the mean score is 75,8 categorized good. So, it can be concluded that the use of animation video improved the eleventh-grade students’ listening skill at SMA Negeri 1 Stabat Kabupaten Langkat.

Abstract

Differentiated Learning is the process of tailoring lessons to meet each student's interests, needs, and strengths, the goal of this research is to analyze the teachers’ strategies and obstacles in using differentiated learning in Sekolah penggerak. The subjects were four teachers from the Sekolah Penggerak namely SMP Negeri 4 Pahae Julu and SMP Negeri 2 Siatas Barita in North Tapanuli in North Sumatra. Interviews, observation, and documentation were applied to collect the data. Qualitative descriptive was the type of approach used in this study. The data was analyzed using triangulation consisting of three stages, namely data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion Strategies used by the teachers to accommodate the students' needs were the differentiated content, process, and product by mapping the students’ needs based on the students’ readiness, interests and learning profiles. Thus, this research concludes that the strategies in differentiated learning in class were effective and could help the students to understand the material according to the student’s needs. For further research, the researcher might scrutinize the effectiveness of differentiated learning in teaching English for student outcomes and the schools, the obstacles in teaching using differentiated learning were, that the teachers should facilitate workshops or training about differentiated learning.

Abstract

One of the key elements in advancing the teaching and learning process in a classroom is technology. It can assist the instructor in giving the class a better lesson. Technology plays a vital role in education since it allows teachers to access some amterials including playing videos, songs, movies, and even theatrical productions. It was found that a large number of teachers did not use technology in teaching. The objective of the study media was to investigate the teacher’s use of technology as instructional media. Interviews and classroom observation were used to collect the data. The participants were 11 teachers from one private school in North Sumatra. It was found that almost five teachers did not use technology in teaching.  The platform that they used mostly were Canva, PowerPoint, quizzes, and YouTube,  The reasons were the lack of facilities and the inability to use technology.

Abstract

The objective of the research is to analyze the types, and the dominant type of deixis used in “An Irish Goodbye” short film script. In completing the analysis, this research uses qualitative research method. In data collection technique, the researcher uses document analysis. This research used set of words or film script as the data in the forms of monologues delivered by Alex, an Irish man, as the main character taken from “An Irish Goodbye” short film directed by Cody Farren.  There are five types of deixis are focused to be analyzed in this research. All the types of deixis covering personal pronoun, social, discourse, place, and time deictic expressions as in Levinson (1983) are found in the “An Irish Goodbye” short film script. In person deixis, the deictic expression found are personal pronoun. The results of the research indicates that (1) there are 273 data of five deixis types found on “An Irish Goodbye” short film script, consisting of: 80 data (29.30%) of person deixis, 21 data (7.70%) of spatial deixis, 131 data (47.99%) of temporal deixis, 33 word (12.08%) of social deixis, and 8 data (2.93%) of discourse deixis. Hence, the temporal deixis (131 deictic words or 47.99%) is the most frequently used deixis.
