Abstract

Objective: This study elucidates Oprah Winfrey's address at the 2024 Democratic National Convention. It seeks to examine the many forms of lexical and grammatical coherence according to the theory of Halliday and Hasan (1976). Method: The data analysis indicated that the use of both lexical and grammatical cohesion significantly contributes to the development of cohesive, clear, and comprehensible speech. Results: The research indicated that "Repetition," a lexical cohesive technique, and "Reference," a grammatical cohesive device, were extensively used by Oprah to reinforce her message to the audience. She used these two categories with the others to enhance the efficacy of her speech and its persuasive impact. Novelty: Oprah Winfrey is a credible individual, transcending her role as a media icon, which imparts considerable influence to her statements among millions. Oprah's extensive influence and media presence make her endorsements of politicians a significant effect in shaping voting patterns. Her support of Kamala Harris at the 2024 Democratic National Convention exemplifies the significant voter interest her speech garnered.

Abstract

Objective: This study examines the impact of sports programs on Iraqi youth, focusing on how these programs affect social, psychological and behavioral values, and aims to evaluate the role of sports programs in shaping positive and negative behaviors among young viewers. Method: This study is based on the descriptive and analytical method, where a random sample of 300 Iraqi youth between the ages of 18 and 30 years from all regions was selected, and data were collected by using a questionnaire to find out how many people watch sports programs, how good these programs are, and how they affect values like discipline, cooperation, and love for sports. Result: The results showed that sports programs have a significant positive impact on social values such as discipline and teamwork, as the results showed that viewing hours contribute to enhancing these values significantly, while the impact of programs on negative behaviors such as sports fanaticism was small, and statistical analyses, such as the Chi-square test and regression analysis, also showed that there is a strong relationship between watching sports programs and enhancing positive behaviors. Novelty: The study confirms that sports programs play an important role in promoting social and psychological values among Iraqi youth, with the need to work on reducing the negative effects related to sports fanaticism by improving the content of these programs.

Abstract

Objective: This study explores the manifestation of deceit in Shakespeare’s Macbeth through pragmatic and critical discourse analysis, with specific aims of identifying the types of deception employed, uncovering the thematic topics that fuel persuasive deceit, and proposing an eclectic model for categorizing deceptive utterances based on Fairclough’s (1989) framework. Method: Employing a qualitative design, the research systematically examines textual evidence from the play, applying discourse-analytic techniques to classify and interpret deceptive strategies within the dramatic context. Results: The analysis reveals that directive speech acts dominate the early stages of deception, with prosperity, throne, pride, and power as recurring themes, while overstatements and violations of the quality maxim emerge as the most frequent forms of deceit. The study also indicates that concealment is scarcely observed, and speech acts with dual pragmatic force are rare. Novelty: By integrating Fairclough’s critical discourse model into an eclectic framework, this research advances a distinctive approach to literary pragmatics, offering new insights into how rhetorical deception is constructed and functions in shaping characters’ ideologies and the tragic trajectory of Shakespeare’s play.

Abstract

Objective: The purpose of this study is to explore how children’s shows are categorized on Iraqi television and to find out what they might do about social skills for children as well as awareness, logic, and creative thinking. Method: Our research was conducted using a quantitative methodology: questionnaires were given out to children, parents, and teachers in ODK (Open Data Kit) format, while the Smart Plus program was used for data analysis and hypotheses testing. Result: The first hypothesis showed that these programs help children develop various social skills such as cooperation, the courage to explore their world, and love for each other through fun, pedagogical ways. The second hypothesis confirmed that these programs build awareness and logic into young children by providing educational content that supports problem-solving and decision-making. The third hypothesis suggested that through creative narrative, interactive exercises, and puzzles designed to stimulate the brain, children’s shows encourage imaginative thinking. Novelty: The research concludes that children’s television programs, if integrated into a broader system of education involving interaction and practical engagement, can significantly foster holistic child development, highlighting the need for more interactive formats where parents, teachers, and students critically and creatively use the information rather than passively receiving it.

Abstract

Objective: This test lights up the intersection of media and politics in the Iraqi context and introduces adaptive continuity theory to explain why the field was )notified by enabling media reform, which has been fundamentally transformed. A longitudinal study of four Iraqi governments (2014-2023) systematically analyzes media coverage, examining how well sitting leaders meet objections from various sectors. The study also includes field research data and media discourse analysis to understand the influence of political control on the media system, as well as the relationship between party-state control and media message production. Method: The study reveals that media reforms did not change the MMC institutional corrections over a long period. Instead, they highlighted how these institutions produce media actors and entrench past propaganda relations. Additionally, media outlets are under greater political pressure, and party-state relationships continue to dominate media content, especially in mainstream media. Result: Social media, although breaking the former monopoly on information, has been manipulated by those forces that originally maintained that monopoly. The study presents a paradox of social media: it has democratized information but also enabled those in power to control and limit the dissemination of information. Novelty: The analysis concludes that the media's credibility crisis, fueled by fake news and government censorship, prevents it from fulfilling its oversight function. The study proposes that further reform, without radical change to protect media institutions from partisan control, will remain ineffective.

Abstract

Objective: This study investigates the financial implications and tertiary education reforms resulting from Nigeria’s removal of educational subsidies, focusing on its effects on the management and governance of educational institutions. Method: Using a quantitative research design, the study analyzes data collected from surveys, academic journals, and government reports to assess both the benefits and challenges associated with subsidy removal. Results: The findings reveal that while the removal of subsidies has increased government funding for education, improved infrastructure, enhanced teacher welfare, and supported Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), it has also led to higher school fees, increased dropout rates, reduced support for low-income families, and widened inequalities in educational access. Novelty: This research contributes to policy discourse by emphasizing the need for a legal framework to allocate a portion of subsidy savings directly to educational development—particularly in infrastructure, research, and teacher training—and by proposing mitigation strategies such as school feeding programs, scholarships, and free learning materials to cushion the socioeconomic impact of subsidy removal.

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to analyze Michel Foucault’s conceptualization of power, discourse, and knowledge, emphasizing his philosophical departure from traditional notions of centralized authority. Method: Using a qualitative descriptive approach through critical textual analysis of Foucault’s key works—such as Discipline and Punish and The Archaeology of Knowledge—the study explores how Foucault constructs an interdependent relationship between power and knowledge within social structures. Results: The findings reveal that Foucault reconceptualizes power as diffuse, relational, and embedded in everyday practices rather than confined to formal political hierarchies. Knowledge, in this framework, becomes both a product and an instrument of power, shaping discourse and social order. Discourse, in turn, functions as a mechanism through which power is manifested, legitimized, and reproduced across institutions. Novelty: This study contributes to philosophical scholarship by highlighting Foucault’s unique synthesis of power and knowledge as mutually constitutive forces, offering a critical framework to understand contemporary social, cultural, and epistemological dynamics beyond classical political paradigms.

Abstract

Objective: This study explores how gamification strategies can be utilized as an integrative framework to address both psychological recovery and Arabic language learning needs for children in post-disaster areas, who often face post-traumatic mental illness and learning difficulties. Method: A literature review (2020-2025) was conducted to examine the application of gamification aligned with Trauma-Informed Care (TIC) principles. The study highlights how game design elements, such as progression, choice, and collaboration, can address psychological needs for competence, autonomy, and relatedness, especially in post-trauma contexts. Results: The research finds that gamification, when contextualized to local culture and integrated with stress-free, sensitive content, promotes safe and meaningful Arabic language learning. The study also shows that dynamic engagement and positive feedback mechanisms within the game can enhance emotional regulation and resilience, leading to improved Arabic language skills, reduced stress levels, increased motivation, and stronger social bonds. Novelty: This study supports the effectiveness of holistic gamification in language learning as a psycho-educational intervention, providing hope, structure, and empowerment to children affected by disaster.
