Abstract

Given the interaction between language and thought, this novel work proposes a linguistic relativity hypothesis of the Holy Qur’an. Supported with evidence from thorough investigation of Sapir-Whorf’s Linguistic Relativity Hypothesis, and linguistic characteristics unique to this divine book ranging from surface structure to deep structure, especially its semantic layers, the proposed hypothesis states that the linguistic structure of the Holy Quran influences and shapes the reader's thought. In the meantime, convergent thinking and divergent thinking emerge as two directions of thought, respectively. The language of the Holy Qur’an influences, shapes and directs one’s thought about himself/herself and the universe.

Abstract

This study investigates Ibn Kaṡīr's interpretation of QS. al-Mā'idah [5]: 51, with particular emphasis on the prohibition against taking Jews and Christians as awliyā' (loyal friends or protectors). Ibn Kaṡīr  interprets awliyā' using the term muwālat, which connotes forming close friendships or alliances. This interpretation appears to contradict a hadith that he himself cites, which indicates that such relationships may be permissible under certain circumstances. The study seeks to describe and analyze how Ibn Kaṡīr's socio-historical context, particularly during the Crusades, influenced his interpretation of this verse. By employing an analytical-descriptive approach within a literature review framework, this research examines how interpretive biases can emerge when the socio-historical context of the exegete is not adequately considered. The findings reveal that Ibn Kaṡīr's stringent interpretation, which broadly prohibits Muslims from forming close alliances with Jews and Christians, is deeply rooted in the religious and political tensions of his time. The study underscores the necessity of adopting a holistic approach in Qur'anic exegesis to mitigate potential biases stemming from the socio-historical circumstances of the exegete.

Abstract

This study explores the issue of religious moderation in Indonesia, particularly within the context of QS. al-Baqarah [2]: 143, a verse frequently cited as foundational to the concept of moderation. Amidst the ongoing political climate, the issue of intolerance has become increasingly pertinent, exacerbated by the rise of social media and the influence of political buzzers who often distort information for specific agendas. The research aims to explore how the concept of religious moderation is interpreted by the community and how this interpretation is shaped from textual sources to everyday practices. Employing Hans-Georg Gadamer's hermeneutic method, the study analyzes the term “ummatan wasaṭan” in QS. al-Baqarah [2]: 143, with a focus on the socio-historical context of the text's revelation and its relevance to contemporary life. The findings reveal that the public's understanding of religious moderation is frequently misconstrued as either passive or inflexible, whereas it should be comprehended as embodying fairness and balance. Through descriptive-analytical text analysis, the study concludes that religious moderation, consistent with Gadamer's theory, involves an interplay between the horizon of the text and the horizon of the reader, facilitating a deeper and more contextually relevant understanding of the text in the present day.
Menggali Makna di Balik Teks: Analisis Hermeneutika QS. Āli 'Imrān [3]: 118-120 untuk Dialog Antaragama Maghfiratuzzahroh, Maghfiratuzzahroh

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the interpretation of QS. Āli 'Imrān [3]: 118-120 within the context of inter-religious relations, particularly between Muslims and non-Muslims, utilizing Jorge J.E. Gracia's hermeneutical approach. The research is grounded in the observed ambivalence within the Qur'anic verses concerning interactions with non-Muslims, which advocate for tolerance and dialogue on one hand, while seemingly imposing limitations on interaction on the other. This study employs a qualitative approach, adopting a literature review method that involves text analysis and draws on both primary and secondary sources, including books, journal articles, and other academic works. Gracia’s theory, which highlights the significance of socio-historical context in textual interpretation, serves as the primary analytical framework. The findings suggest that a literal interpretation of QS. Āli 'Imrān [3]: 118-120, which appears to restrict relations with non-Muslims, often fails to account for the historical and contextual circumstances surrounding the revelation of the verse. A hermeneutical approach indicates that such restrictions should be understood within the socio-political context of early Islam, rather than as universal principles applicable to all contexts. These insights contribute significantly to fostering a more inclusive and contextually relevant understanding of interfaith relations, particularly within contemporary societies that are increasingly pluralistic and interconnected on a global scale.

Abstract

The interpretation of the word auliya in Islamic exegesis is a significant issue because it is linked to concepts of loyalty, friendship, and leadership within a religious framework. The classical tafsir works, Anwar at-Tanzil and al-Kasysyāf, provide differing perspectives on the meaning of auliya. This article seeks to bridge this gap by examining the interpretation of auliya in Anwar at-Tanzil and al-Kasysyāf and tracing the influence of one upon the other using Julia Kristeva's intertextuality approach. Employing a thematic method, this study focuses specifically on the meaning of auliyaas its primary subject of analysis. The findings reveal that al-Baiḍawī's interpretation of auliya is heavily influenced by the earlier interpretation found in al-Kasysyāf. Through Kristeva's intertextuality framework, it becomes evident that the principles of parallelism, modification, and expansion or haplology play a dominant role in this influence. The prevalence of these principles points to a tendency towards transposition as an ideologeme, marked by the inclusion of elements of addition, subtraction, adjustment, and the reorganization of ideas in al-Baiḍawī's interpretation of auliya.
