Abstract

The Heart of Borneo (HoB) declaration is a conservation agreement initiated by WWF and signed by three countries, i.e., Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia and Malaysia in Bali, Indonesia on 12th February 2007 to protect more than 23 million hectares of forested region on Borneo Island. These forested areas could be well protected when conservation management plan is in place. One of the crucial activities to facilitate the planning and formulation of conservation plan is to conduct scientific expeditions that include botanical exploration. The primary objective of the expedition is to identify the key conservation targets within the forest reserves. For the past five years, several expeditions have been conducted by the Sabah Forestry Department under the auspices of the HoB project to explore various forest reserves with conservation issues within the Heart of Borneo area. This paper will present the findings which include plant richness, endemism and plant conservation status in each forest reserves that has been explored.

Abstract

Dr. Airy Shaw (Van Steenis, Fl. Males. Ser. I, 6(1): 48. 1960),referred Hornera Jungh.(Tijdschr. natuurl. Geschied. & Physiol. 7: 314. 1840) ten-tatively to Lauraceae.Hornera was described in an article with the misleading title: Nova genera et species plantarum Javanicum, as the species numbered 22 to 27 are from Japan. Under no. 22 there is a remark: "siccatam e regius japonico accepi".Flora Malesiana gives no clue where this Japanese collection came from; no collecting localities and no collectors are mentioned by Junghuhn).According to Maximowicz (in Bentham & Hooker f., Gen. PI. 3: 188-189. 1880) the genus should not be Japanese; this wrong statement is apparently due to the fact, that Maximowicz could not attribute the genus in its circumscription to any Japanese plant.

Abstract

In order to study the changes in nitrogen content of forest soils after clearcutting and burning over a period of time, two plots of 0.5 ha in the primary mixed dipterocarp and kerangas forests were established and clear-cut. Thereafter, all felled vegetation in one plot of each forest type was burnt, while in the other plot the vegetation was removed from the plot without burning. Soil samples were collected along the transect line 1 x 100 m in each of plots at intervals of 20 m.The preliminary results of the data collected over 6 and 12 weeks after felling with or without burning showed a decline of total N and organic C contents of topsoil and an increase in soil pH.

Abstract

The history of the genus and the arguments for merging it with Aglaia,,areexpounded.The section Lansium of Aglaia is characterized by simple hairs and contains 15 species.Aglaia kinabaluensis, A. intricatoreticulata, A. membrartacea and A. chartacea are new to science.New combinations: Aglaia anamallayana, aquea, breviracemosa, dubia, koster- mansii, pedicellata, sepalina. New names: A. steenisii (base: L. pedicellatum Kosterm.), A. pseudolansium (base: L.cinereum Hiern).The genus Reinwardtiodendron Koorders is merged with Aglaia (sect Lansium);new name: A. reinwardtiana (base R. celebicum Kds.).Excluded are: Lansium decandrum Roxb. and L. hum.ile Hassk., which are referred to Aphanamixis (A. decandra and A. humile, comb, nov.).

Abstract

WIRIADINATA, H. & SARI, R. 2010. A new species of Rafflesia (Rafflesiaceae) from North Sumatra. Reinwardtia  13(2): 95-100. - Rafflesia meijeri Wiriadinata & Sari spec. nov. from North Sumatra is described. It appears closely related to R. rochussenii Teijsm. & Binn. from West Java which has no processes on the disk, smaller flower, the lobes with a different wart pattern, a wider groove with thin lamellae on the central column, ramenta filiform without swollen apex.

Abstract

The anatomy of leaves, twigs, wood and seedling of Kostermansia Soegeng is described. A comparison with some species of Coelostegia and Durio indicates the close affinities between the three taxa, but also shows some differences in leaf anatomy, probably valuable for diagnostic purposes. The stomata in Kostermansia show a very remarkable arrangement in circles around the insertions of the scales.

Abstract

Seven species are described and a key to the species is presented.The genus is recorded foe the first time from Central Sumatra and this record is an extension of its generic distribution,known previously from Borneo and Malaya. Plethiandra acaminata Merr.and Plethiandra sahebii Burkill are reduced to synonymy and the following new com- binations are proposed: Plethiandra robusta (Cogn.)Nayar,Plethiandra seesiliflora (Cogn.) Merr. var.sessilis (Stapf) Nayar.

Abstract

 1. A new monotypic genus, Kalappia Kostermans, is established for a tree of commercial importance from Celebes, K. celebica Kostermans. The genus is assigned to Caesalpiniaceae (Tribus Cassiae).2. The Papilionaceous genus Desmofischera Holth.(only species: D.monosperma Holth.) is reduced to a synonym of Monarthrocarpus Merr.[only species: M. securiformis (Benth.) Merr.]. Additional collections, from Morotai, are cited.

Abstract

A new species of Sida from Penambangan Village, Sidoarjo, East Java related to Sida acuta is described as Sida penambangensis Felayati, Rustiami & Susandarini. It is distinguished from Sida acuta Burm.f. with at least six characters such as stem covered with obvious long trichomes, reddish-purple at upper leaf margin, stipule subulate-falcate, pedicels not articulated, mericarps 9–11 with pair linear awns 0.8 mm long with simple and stellate pubescence. It is described and illustrated here as a species new to science.
