Abstract

Background: Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the airways characterized by shortness of breath, cough, and wheezing, which can result in an ineffective breathing pattern. One of the therapies used to manage this condition is oxygen therapy. Oxygen therapy, particularly using a nasal cannula, is a non-pharmacological nursing intervention aimed at improving ventilation and patients’ oxygenation status. Objective: To determine the effectiveness of oxygen therapy (nasal cannula) in improving ineffective breathing patterns in asthma patients in the pulmonary care unit of RSUD Kota Baubau. Methods: This study employed a descriptive case study design involving one patient. The instruments used included the standard operating procedure (SOP) for oxygen administration, a pulse oximeter, an observation sheet, and a nursing care format. The intervention was carried out for 3 × 24 hours, with oxygen therapy administered twice daily for 15 minutes at a flow rate of 2–4 liters per minute according to the procedure. Results: After three days of therapy from May 29 to May 31, 2025, the patient’s respiratory rate decreased from 28 breaths per minute to 23 breaths per minute. The patient’s breathing pattern improved from irregular to regular. The use of accessory respiratory muscles decreased, wheezing was still present but with reduced frequency, and complaints of shortness of breath were reduced. Conclusion: Oxygen therapy using a nasal cannula is effective in improving ineffective breathing patterns in asthma patients, as indicated by a decreased respiratory rate and improved breathing patterns. This intervention can be used as one of the nursing approaches in the management of asthma in healthcare facilities.

Abstract

Background: Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic disease characterized by high blood sugar levels which can affect quality of life, instability of blood sugar levels and compliance with taking medication. Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between medication adherence and blood sugar levels with quality of life in type II diabetes mellitus patients at the Kassi-Kassi Community Health Center. Methods: This study uses a quantitative research method with a cross-sectional approach. The research location is at the Kassi-Kassi Community Health Center in Makassar City. Sampling used purposive sampling with a population of 190 and a sample of this study amounted to 65 respondents, data collection using the Morisky Medication Adherence Scale-8 questionnaire for medication adherence, the Quality of life-brief clinical inventory questionnaire for quality of life and observation sheets for Random Blood Glucose (RBG)examination. observation sheets and analyzed using the parametric Pearson/non-parametric Spearman rho test. Results: The results of the study showed that there was a relationship between the level of compliance in taking medication and quality of life with a p value of 0.001, there was no relationship between Random Blood Glucose (RBG)and quality of life with a p value of 0.010.Conclusion: The conclusion of this study is that there is a relationship between medication adherence and quality of life, but no relationship between blood sugar levels and quality of life. To lower blood sugar levels in diabetic patients, adherence to medication and maintaining a healthy lifestyle can help maintain a high quality of life.

Abstract

Background: Adequate antenatal care (ANC) is essential for reducing maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. Despite high initial ANC contact coverage in Indonesia, fulfillment of the six-visit standard (ANC K6) remains limited and socially patterned. Objective: This study aimed to describe sociodemographic and socioeconomic determinants associated with adequate antenatal care (ANC K6) in Indonesia using national survey data. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive analysis was conducted using aggregated data from the 2023 Indonesian Health Survey, including 70,916 women aged 10–54 years who had given birth. The outcome variable was fulfillment of ANC K6. Independent variables included maternal age, education, marital status, parity, place of residence, and household wealth quintile. The analysis examined distributional patterns of ANC K6 across determinant categories without inferential modeling. Results: Nationally, only 17.6% of mothers fulfilled the ANC K6 standard. Among mothers who achieved ANC K6, the majority were aged 20–34 years (76.5%), had secondary or higher education (79.3%), resided in urban areas (57.6%), and belonged to higher wealth quintiles (49.7%). These findings indicate a pronounced social gradient in continuity of antenatal care utilization. Conclusion: Adequate antenatal care in Indonesia remains low and unequally distributed. Structural factors including education, residence, and household wealth - appear to shape continuity of care. Policies should prioritize reducing barriers to repeated visits among socioeconomically disadvantaged populations.
