Abstract

Ruth and Nommensen, as immigrants, showed how they could be a blessing to the nation in which they found themselves. Through their lives, these two characters encourage the adoption of the paradigm of inclusivism, which is important for anyone who examines their life journeys. Ruth is portrayed as a foreign and poor migrant who is treated well by the locals. Nommensen, on the other hand, was a foreigner who practiced inclusive diakonia to the marginalized indigenous population. The meeting of the migrant journey narrative in the Book of Ruth with the figure of Nommensen provides deep insight into the importance of caring for the marginalized, which comes from inclusivism. In the context of the Batak people, the figures of Ruth and Nommensen are a source of inspiration for behavior when living as foreign migrants in overseas lands, and for the church these two figures encourage the presence of a proactive attitude through transformative inclusive diaconal actions and present the name of non-violent actions.

Abstract

This study aims to affirm Decalogue teachings as guidelines for generation Z or digital natives. This is considered necessary to be reviewed specifically as the church’s efforts in guiding, educating, and teaching every member of the congregation, especially the congregation which can be called the future that will take over the entire instrument of church service. The decalogue in question refers to the ten commandments found in Exodus 20 and Deuteronomy 5. In Israelite culture, the Decalogue was God’s law to His people. The decalogue includes commandments categorized into two broad aspects: relationships to God and others. Decalogues are usually taught by the church in the discipleship process with the aim of maturing the faith which is often referred to as catechization. Since the beginning of Christianity, the teaching of the Decalogue has never been left to be taught to the disciples and that is what has always been maintained until the era of the arrival of missionaries to the archipelago, even today. Unfortunately, at present, the embodiment of Decalogue in the catechization process is only like a formality material, even though generation Z is considered very vulnerable to being hit by the bad influence of rapid digital progress, of course, this is a challenge that must be answered through the contribution of the role of the church. For this reason, this research is considered important, especially in the process of facing the digital era.

Abstract

In recent years, Augmented Reality (AR) technology has been in the spotlight, especially after Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook, changed the name of Facebook to Meta. Metaverse, which is a simulation of the real world on the internet, marks a new evolution in virtual interaction. The superiority of the metaverse in facilitating communication and other activities has changed social dynamics, including in religious contexts such as evangelism. From the beginning of scriptural media printing to the time of the pandemic, reliance on the metaverse as a medium of interaction and connection has increased. This change was triggered by various crises faced during the period. This research aims to shed light on the evolving relationship between the church and the metaverse, focusing on the changes in the religious mediation process that transformed the dynamics of mission from linear and hierarchical to more flexible and heterarchical. Although mediation is often perceived as a simplification, it can be a source of enriching ideas.

Abstract

The article explores the intricacies of the decade-long debate surrounding the celebration of Christmas in the HKBP Church. Internal tensions have grown due to differing opinions on the date of Christmas observance. Despite attempts to restore traditions in line with the liturgical calendar, internal conflicts and external pressures remain formidable obstacles. The author underscores the importance of understanding two dimensions of time, namely chronos and kairos, by referencing Joas Adiprasetya's thoughts. Providing intriguing insights through a profound understanding of the historical shifts in Christmas traditions in the HKBP Church, influenced by historical and political events, this article highlights significant hurdles from both internal and external factors. It explores how an inaccurate understanding of the liturgical calendar can adversely impact the liturgical meaning of Christmas celebration in the HKBP Church.

Abstract

Gender equality remains a significant topic of discussion within theological discourse. The creation narrative in Genesis 1-3 has historically been interpreted through androcentric and misogynistic lenses, perpetuating theological views that marginalize women. Such interpretations have been transmitted through centuries, contributing to a theological framework that subordinates women. This study seeks to critically examine these androcentric and misogynistic readings of Genesis 1-3 within the Christian tradition and to offer a narrative reinterpretation that reveals hermeneutical insights supporting gender equality. Utilizing a qualitative research methodology, specifically a literature review, the study demonstrates that the original relationship between man and woman, as depicted in Genesis 1-2, reflects an "I-Thou" dynamic, which was fractured into an "I-It" relationship following the events of Genesis 3. The research advocates for contemporary Christians to restore the initial relational dynamic by rejecting all forms of gender inequality.

Abstract

This article explores the environmental crisis as not solely a matter of physical degradation, but also as a reflection of a deeper spiritual crisis arising from humanity’s estrangement from the natural world. By engaging in a dialogue between the Christian theological concept of the Trinity and the Batak Toba belief in Debata Mulajadi Na Bolon, this study brings together the spiritual values of these two traditions to offer a unique perspective. Meister Eckhart's interpretation of the Trinity emphasizes a dynamic and reciprocal relationship between God and creation, highlighting God's simultaneous transcendence and immanence within both human life and the natural world. Similarly, Debata Mulajadi Na Bolon is understood as the creator of the universe and its entirety, actively participating in human existence. Both traditions affirm a sacred interconnectedness between humanity, nature, and creation. This article argues that effective environmental action must be rooted in a deep spiritual consciousness that recognizes humans as integral to creation, rather than as separate dominators. By reestablishing this spiritual connection, we can approach the environmental crisis with a more comprehensive, holistic response, where care for nature becomes an essential aspect of spiritual responsibility. Trinitarian Eco-Spirituality, therefore, emerges as a crucial framework for cultivating a renewed consciousness that reveres nature as a living and sacred creation, necessitating its protection and stewardship by humankind.

Abstract

This article explores the influence of Christianity on European culture through a historical lens, focusing on its impact as reflected in contemporary media, particularly within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The study aims to examine the relationship between European religious history and the portrayal of certain characters in the MCU, with specific attention to Thor: Love and Thunder. Like many Hollywood films, the MCU contains references and underlying messages that viewers often overlook. The findings reveal that the MCU implicitly portrays elements of European cultural history through key characters, reflecting an interpretation that intertwines historical religious understanding with the syncretism that characterized the cultural struggles and awakenings of Europe.

Abstract

This paper examines Jan Hendriks' five-factor model for congregational revitalization, integrating it with Pete Ward's Liquid Church theory to address contemporary challenges in church development. Congregational revitalization, characterized by both internal fortification and external engagement, is crucial for realizing an effective and sustainable ecclesial vision. Hendriks' model emphasizes five key dimensions: climate, leadership, structure, goals and tasks, and identity. By incorporating Ward's Liquid Church theory, this approach introduces the adaptability required to navigate evolving sociocultural contexts without compromising the core ecclesial identity. In this framework, the paper highlights the critical role of shared leadership in cultivating dynamic, empowered, and relevant congregations.

Abstract

This article critically examines the Apostle Paul's doctrine of justification by faith as articulated in Galatians 3:1-12 and seeks to contextualize it within the life and ministry of the HKBP Church. In Galatians 3:1-12, Paul addresses the misconception among the Galatians, who believed that justification could be achieved through good works rather than faith in Christ. Paul emphasizes that justification is not obtained through adherence to the law or the performance of good deeds but solely through faith in Christ. This doctrine aligns with the theological principles of faith and salvation as outlined in the HKBP's Agenda and Confession of Faith. However, this concept has not been fully understood or embraced by the broader HKBP congregations. Many still prioritize tradition and good works, often doubting the assurance of salvation, which can lead to a lack of genuine belief. Utilizing a qualitative research methodology, this study seeks to clarify the doctrine of justification to prevent doctrinal misinterpretations that could undermine faith and religious practices within the church. Furthermore, the paper explores how the theology of justification by faith can be effectively integrated into HKBP church practices.
