Abstract

There are pros and cons to the existence of the Islamic University of Indonesia (PIRI). Some perceive it as a seeding site of Indonesian Ahmadiyah Movement (GAI) ideas and values. PIRI is alleged to have carried out knowledge transmission for GAI. But for some other, PIRI is a foundation organizing merely educational activities without any affi liation to GAI, especially with regard to such knowledge transmission. Through a qualitative research approach, it is found that PIRI was born from an idea of GAI founders that the spirit of GAI underlies the PIRI education activities. Most of the principals at PIRI schools indeed come from GAI. However, most of the teachers come from a variety of socio-religious backgrounds, and the students are from the community that has never been the followers of GAI. PIRI adopts curriculum produced by the Ministry of Education and Culture for secular subjects and that produced by the Ministry of Religious Affairs for Islamic as well as their PIRI (Ahmadiya)-specifi c subject matters. In conclusion, there is historical and spiritual relationship between PIRI and GAI and not organizational relationship. Although there are attempts of GAI knowledge transmission in PIRI, but education in PIRI schools is more oriented to their educational goals of integrating to social changes in the community, and conformity to the Indonesian national education system.

Abstract

Learning pattern of Islamic higher education, especially in Indonesia, is generally dominated by conventional learning with teacher-centered approach in which learning process focuses on the lectures, not on the students. As a result, the students tend to be passive and poor of creativity, less capable of arguing, trying, and appreciating science. Considering this reality, it is a necessity to make some efforts of reconstructing that learning pattern. One of them is doing bench-marking against universities in Australia, like Melbourne University. Therefore, this study focuses on learning management system of Melbourne University in relation to the development of learning quality. The result of the study shows that learning strategy developed at Melbourne University enhances student active learning through a variety of learning experiences, such as on-line discussion (collaborative learning), weekly readings, weekly exams, weekly assignments (independent learning), class presentation, and round table discussion. In addition, learning management system at Melbourne University has been running well along with an integrated system of ICT that enables the lecturers to communicate their courses and enables the students to interact dynamically with the tasks, lectures, and other students. It is expected that this can be an inspiration and alternative model for Islamic higher education institutions in Indonesia in designing their learning pattern and environment to promote active learning.

Abstract

Implementation of multicultural education in madrasas is a very interesting topic to present in this paper, considering the characteristics of learners which can be said to be more homogeneous than the secular schools. In general, the multicultural education has become necessary to be applied in educational institutions with heterogeneous learners, especially in terms of their beliefs. Multicultural values taught in school will be more easily practiced in the social life among such heterogeneous students. But this is not the case with homogenous madrasas. The development of multicultural values in madrasahs will call for its own concepts and strategies.Using a qualitative research approach with in-depth interviews as the main data collection instrument, this paper tries to formulate multicultural education conducted by the Madrasah Pembangunan, Ciputat, Tangerang, by seeing how the context, concept, and its implementation in educational systems are organized. The findings include, among others, the facts that multicultural education in madrasah is nothing new because multicultural values have been taught in many subjects there. These multicultural values are developed and introduced and required by the students in Madrasah Pembangunan to deal with heterogeneous members of society such as the values of tolerance, empathy, cooperation; and four main properties of Muhammad Rasululllah (Genuine, Trustworthy, Authentic, Intelligent). Other values include confi dence, quality work and competitive.

Abstract

This paper draws on a study on Integrated Religious Education for School Education System conducted in 2013 focusing on Junior Secondary Education of Yayasan Pendidikan Shafi yyatul Amaliyyah (SMP YPSA) in Medan, using a qualitative approach comprising in-depth interviews with key informants, such as the foundation chairman, Principal, Islamic subject teachers, and the parents. This study focused on the development of Islamic Subjects (PAI) management integrated with the rest of junior high school education activities in SMP YPSA Medan. Islamic subjects and character building here were considered the soul of all subject matters. Such integration model was applied in cobwebs construction as well as a logical consequence of YPSA vision and mission that determined that Islamic subjects and character building would be the characteristics of SMP YPSA Medan.

Abstract

Around the 2000s many institutions labeled as Islamic Integrated Schools (Sekolah Islam Terpadu/SIT) emerged. They were quite attractive to the public. One of the concepts of Integrated Islamic School is a one that uses a combined approach of general and religious educations into a fi ne integration in terms of curriculum, teaching methods, education of Aqliyah (rational), Ruhiyah (spiritual) and jasadiyah (physical). This study using qualitative approach aims to describe what and how the integration model in Islamic Junior Secondary Education (SMPIT) Bina Umat are all about. The fi ndings suggest that there are at least four components that comprise essential elements of integration in SMPIT Bina Ummah. The fi rst is the integration with the environment. The second is the integration in terms of curriculum aspects. The third is the integration with traditional model of boarding school education. And the fourth is the integrated learning both inside and outside the classroom.
