Abstract

This research aims at investigating the improvement of physical condition of members of Student Activity Unit (UKM) of women aerobic gym in Universitas Nahdhlatul Ulama Surabaya (UNUSA) through aerobic gym learning. This research adopted quantitative approach through descriptive method to describe physical condition of UKM members of women aerobic gym that included: endurance of heart muscle, arm muscle, and stomach muscle, and flexibility. Sample of this study engaged 20 students of women aerobic gym of UNUSA. Results revealed that90% of the students had very low heart muscle endurance. 80% of the students had low arm muscle endurance, whereas 20% of the students’ arm muscle endurance was very low. 65% of the students had adequate stomach muscle endurance, while 35% of the students had low stomach muscle endurance. 40% of the students had low flexibility, while 60% of the students had very low flexibility. Aerobic gym learning needs to be done gradually and well programmed by following frequency standard, intensity, and training tempo. To achieve a good physical condition, portion of physical training must suit the possessed skills.

Abstract

This research aims at investigating the implementation of laboratory work method of vinegar fermentation on students’ science process skill and learning outcomes. This research was conducted at the Biology laboratory of Balitar Islamic University in the academic year of 2017/2018. The sample of this study were 25 Biology students. This study adopted Pre Experimental Design One Shoot Case Study. Results of this study revealed that the highest aspect of the students’ science process skill was arranging report (3.98), whereas the lowest aspect was arranging hypothesis (3.46). The highest percentage of science process skill was 80% on average, with the highest average score of 80.3. Meanwhile, the lowest percentage of science process skill was 8% on average, with the average score of 58.50. The implementation of laboratory work method of vinegar fermentation in Introduction to Biotechnology course attained the success of ≥75%, indicating that the students’ science process skill was good. The method can be applied in other courses which need more laboratory works. This method is applicable to other variables, too.

Abstract

This study addresses the implementation of the flipped classroom in redefining the traditional learning process in higher education. The data were collected by observing the learning process of Advanced Listening course, which was set up in a flipped classroom mode. The data of observation showed that the steps in the flipped classroom were as follows: (1) learning the materials (beyond the classroom); (2) taking notes and preparing questions (beyond the classroom); (3) presenting the materials (inside the classroom); and (4) discussing the materials (inside the classroom). The findings suggest that educators should start flipping the classroom since it provides a lot of educational benefits.

Abstract

This article investigates the technique of teaching vocabulary using Beare’s vocabulary charts. The technique helps to improve students’ mastery of English language and widens their passive and active vocabulary based on related word group areas. The relevancy between vocabularies in the charts is the vocabulary used in students’ daily activities. Adopting a Classroom Action Research, this study collected the data by using vocabulary charts, tests, field notes, checklist, and questionnaires. The result showed that the implementation of vocabulary chart has improved semester three students’ vocabulary achievement at Universitas Islam Balitar, Blitar. 77% of the students passed the minimum criteria of success in the first cycle, and 75% of the students passed the minimum criteria in the second cycle. This technique is beneficial to facilitate students in learning English vocabulary. Vocabulary word charts in teaching English vocabulary are thus recommended.

Abstract

This research aims at investigating teachers’ methods in teaching religion and sport related to sexuality. Kind of data used in this study was qualitative data. Qualitative data is kind of data that is written in the form of words. Qualitative data in this study included overview of learning process of religion and sport subjects concerning sex education. Sex education is taught in SDK 143 Bhaktyarsa through learning process of religion and sport via learning materials containing of sexuality. When explaining either religion or sport materials, teachers adopted pictures and simple language to make students more understand the materials.

Abstract

Vocabulary mastery of students, especially the third semester of university students, remains poor. Vocabulary is a basic component of learning English. According to Burhan Nurigiyantoro (2001: 213) vocabulary is word richness owned by a language. With vocabulary, students understand word meanings used in particular context that must be prepared since early age. This research aims at developing snake and ladder game as a learning media to teach vocabulary course to the third semester students of Universitas Islam Balitar. Given that vocabulary is crucial in learning English, this research is able to enhance students’ vocabulary mastery through web-based game that is accessible for them; therefore, they can master and use vocabulary correctly. This research adopted in-depth interview, questionnaire, and, observation to collect the data. The participants were the third semester students of Universitas Islam Balitar who learned vocabulary course. All the data obtained from different data collection methods were used to provide solutions of the problem. This research is expected to enhance the students’ vocabulary mastery. Materials packaged in a more interesting media will ease and boost the students’ learning of vocabulary without looking up in a dictionary or other books.

Abstract

This study focused on investigating types of teaching techniques used by English lecturers in teaching speaking and how the implementation types of teaching techniques in teaching speaking under the guidelines of three questions: (1) What types of teaching techniques are used by the English lecturers in teaching speaking? (2) Why do they apply techniques in teaching learning process of speaking? (3) How are the implementation types ofteaching techniques in the teaching learning process of speaking?This research was conducted using descriptive qualitative research. Descriptive qualitative method was chosen because this research dealt with words not number. Besides, the data were described descriptively in the form of paragraph. The data analysis revealed some findings covering the formulation of the research questions.The result of the study showed thatspeech technique was performed by lecturers in teaching speaking that students were really enthusiast during teaching and learning process through speech. Speech also can increase students’ speaking skill. The result of the study could be used to increase teaching and learning process of speaking in order to improve speaking skills.

Abstract

Mosaic and collage drill is an obligatory course at Primary School Teacher Education Department of Universitas Islam Balitar. However, the result of learning process is less optimum in its esthetic function. In addition to being unstable, the product of mosaic and collage has low price due to the use of things attached using glue. Therefore, learning process of mosaic and collage drill is an effort to enhance entrepreneurial skill of the students of Primary School Teacher Education at Universitas Islam Balitar. This research aims at describing the implementation of drill method to enhance the students’ entrepreneurial skill by improving creativity on mosaic and collage material. This research adopted qualitative approach. The type of research was Classroom Action Research. Findings revealed significant improvement at cycle 1 in the creation of mosaic, that is, 11.11%. Meanwhile, in the creation of collage was 16.66%. At cycle 2, the percentage of mosaic creation was 77.77%, while collage creation was 94.44%. Of 18 students, no one did not understand the preliminary materials of mosaic and collage. This finding suggests that the implementation of drill technique can enhance students’ entrepreneurial skill, creativity, and innovation in creation process especially the students of Primary School Teacher Education of Universitas Islam Balitar.

Abstract

In general, the skills in mastering English are reading, speaking, listening, and writing. Of these four things, reading is an important factor that supports the process of mastering other skills and increasing knowledge. Based on the results of the pretest to students of the Informatics Engineering Study Program, the researcher concluded that their grades were low with an average of 47,28. Furthermore, the Indonesian government has recommended the use of CALL by establishing national education development planning. Based on this, the researcher took advantage of the use of gadgets, in this case, a computer or laptop in language learning called CALL. This study adopted a pre-experimental design. The pretest is used to get scores before treatment. Treatment is given to the group for a specified time. After that, the researcher gives a post-test. The results of calculations using the t-test found that the t-value obtained was 7,726 while the critical t-value required at p> 0,05 the level of significance of two-tailed tests was 2,060 (df = 25), p> 0,01 significant level of two-tailed the test was 2,787 (df = 25), p> 0,001 the significant level of the two-tailed tests was 3,725 (df = 25). The results of this study indicate there are difference in scores on pre-test and post-test. So it can be said that students who are taught with CALL achieve better reading comprehension than those taught by printed text

Abstract

The application of character education is a new challenge for elementary school teachers in the development of information technology applying character education. Observations made on students at SDN Rembang 2 Blitar City resulted in the development of opinions and observations from discussions conducted with teachers on the emergence of unfavorable dependencies and changes in the system of moral order and values ​​of students during the use of information and communication technology. The application of character education is carried out in collaboration with parents, the community and the government with rules. Control and binding rules can be done to familiarize students in using information technology properly. Supervision of primary school students in using devices becomes part of the responsibilities of parents, teachers, the community.
