Abstract

The study deals with the Slang wordsbased on David Burke theory. Burkedividedslang wordsinto four type. There were various slang, abbreviate words,slang that is used in American television program, and the particular phrase andidoms. The objectives of this research were to find out the types of slang wordsthat is used in Jay-Z’s song lyrics and to describe the dominant one type of slangwords. This research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method Thesources of the data were taken fom Jay-Z’s album Unfinished Business. and thedata were 7 lyrics of Jay-Z’s song lyrics. After analyzing, it was found that therewere 107 slang words in Jay-Z’s song lyrics. The findings of this research werefound that various slang 4 (3.74%), abbreviate words 73 (68.22%), slang that isused in American television program 27 (25.23%) and the particular phrase andidiom 3 (2.81%). Abbreviate words73 (68.22%) become the dominant type ofslang words in Jay-z’s song lyrics.

Abstract

This study deals with the types of deixis in x (2014) album of Ed Sheeran’s song.The objectives of the study were to describe the kinds of deixis in x (2014) albumof Ed Sheeran’s song which were used in song lyrics, finding out the mostdominant kind and why it is dominantly used. This research applied descriptivequalitative research. Descriptive qualitative research is a method which haspurpose to make a description of situation, condition, phenomenon, and intend toaccumulative data (Cresswell : 2001), this research uses descriptive qualitativeresearch to describe deixis in X (2014) album of Ed Sheeran’s Songs. The sourceof data was song lyrics by Ed Sheeran. Searching the song lyrics as the instrumentto collect the data and there were twelve song. Based on the analysis, there werefive kinds of deixis were found in that album, they are person, spatial, temporal,discourse and social deixis. It consists of 746 person deixis (62.1%), 111 spatialdeixis (9.2%), 157 temporal deixis (13.1%), 108 discourse deixis (9%) and 80social deixis (6.6%).The most dominat kind of deixis which is used in the albumis person deixis with total 746 or 62.1%. the deictic word “I” is the most dominantword of person deixis in the album. Person deixis is dominantly used because hemostly wrote his own experiences into the song lyrics.

Abstract

This study deals with violation of maxin on facebook status. The objectives of thestudy were to find out the types of maxim which were violated by university studentsand described the reasons why they did it in the conversation. The study used Gricetheory of conversational maxim and was conducted by using qualitative descriptivedesign which aimed at describing the types of violated maxim and the reasons whypeople did it. The data were the utterances and were taken from fifty selectedstatus of students from 9 universities in North Sumatera and collected byrandomly sampling technique. The findings of the study showed there were threetypes and reasons of using violation of maxim. They were maxim of quality (1),maxim of quantity (17), maxim of relation (24) and as the most dominant type. Theirreasons were to show respect, change a topic and create humor.

Abstract

The study was deal with the types of ellipsis andsubstitution occurred intheutterances of Youtube Advertisements. The objectives of the study was toidentify and classify the types of ellipsis and substitution and explaining thereason why it becomes the dominant type that occurred in the advertisement. Thedata were analyzed by identifying the utterances found in thescript. The findingsshows that the three types of ellipsis and substitution are occurred in theadvertisement. The reason why it becomes the dominant type was because ellipsisand substitution can make an effective sentence which can be avoid the repetitionof words by omitting unnecessary words which can be predicted from the context.It also can make the sentence in the script more interesting.

Abstract

This thesis deals with the type of illocutionary acts on Liz Gilbert’s dialogue inEat Pray Love movie. The objectives of the study were to describe the types ofillocutionary acts used by Liz Gilbert in Eat Pray Love movie, the dominant typeof illocutionary acts used by Liz Gilbert in Eat Pray Love movie and the reasonwhy the dominant type of illocutionary acts occur on Liz Gilbert’s dialogue in EatPray Love movie. This research was conducted by using descriptive qualitativedesign. Descriptive qualitative research is descriptive in that the researcher isinterested in the process of meaning and understanding gained through words orpicture (Hancock 2007:7). This research used descriptive qualitative researchbecause the intention of this study was to describe how illocutionary used in themovie.The data were the transcript of Liz Gilbert’s dialogue. The findings showedthat there were 466 utterances which contained five types of illocutionary acts,namely: Representatives 198 utterances (42.49%), Directives 169 utterances(36.27%), Expressives 89 utterances (19.10%), Commisives 9 utterances (1.93%)and Declarations 1 utterance (0.21%). The most dominant type of illocutionary actwas Representatives with total number 198 utterances (42.49%) because LizGilbert as the main character often described and informed about the situation ofher journey and experience when she visited Italy, India and Indonesia where shefinally found the balance of life, true love and happiness.

Abstract

The study deals with the types of maxims violation in The Avengers movie’sscript. The objectives of the study were to discover the types of maxims violation,the most dominant maxim violation, and to explain the implication of the mostdominant maxim violation in The Avengers movie. The source of the data was theconversations in The Avengers movie. The data was the script of The Avengersmovie. There were 55 maxim violations in this research. The descriptivequalitative design was used to analyze the data. Descriptive qualitative research isa research method which describes the condition, events or situations. This studywas conducted by using descriptive qualitative method because the intention ofthis study was to describe how the maxims are violated. The results showed thatall types of maxim were violated; 39 utterances (70.90%) maxim violation ofrelation, 8 utterances (14.54%) maxim violation of quality, 5 utterances (9.09 %)maxim violation of quantity, 3 utterances (5.45%) maxim violation of manner.The most dominant type of maxim violation was the maxim violation of relation.The implication of maxim violation of relation as the dominant type of maxims inthe script of The Avengers movie was a strategy from the speakers to hidesomething, to hide the truth, and to create humor by giving irrelevant answer orchanging the topic.

Abstract

This study deals with the verb formation in Angkol language. This study aims tofind out the kind of affix that formed a verb in Angkola, to describethe pattern ofverb formation in Angkola language and also to find out the grammaticalmeanings occurred through the verb formation in Angkola language. This studywas conducted by using descriptive qualitative method by Moleong (1975:5).Inthis research, the descriptive qualitative method was used to find out the types ofaffixes that formed a verb in Angkola language and to describe the pattern of verbformation in Angkola language. The data of this research were taken from thescript of Parhuta-huta part I movie, and 8 song lyrics of Top SimamoraftDeliana.The technique of data analysis applied was generative morphology proposed byHalle (1973). After analyzing the data it was found that were three kinds of affixesfound in verb-formation of Angkola language, namely: 1). Prefix, such as [di-],[ma-], [mar-], [tar], [pa], [maN-]. 2). Suffix, such as: [-kon], [-i], [-hon]. 3).Confix, such as: [maN-i], [maN-kon] and [mar-an], and morphophonemic changealso occurred through the verb formation of Angkola language, namely: 1).Phonological alteration (assimilation) and 2). Phonological Deletion (Omission).And also found four kinds of grammatical meaning occurred through the verbformation of Angkola language namely: 1. activity, 2. Process, 3. Command, 4.Condition. Therefore the dominant types of affixes occurred in verb formation ofAngkola language is prefix with 6 kinds of prefixes. Abstract

This study analyzed the politeness strategies employed by Joko Widodo andPrabowo Subianto in 2014 Presidential Debates. This study used descriptivequalitative method. Kothari (2004:2) states that Descriptive research includessurveys and fact-finding enquiries of different kinds. In this study the writerdescribed the utterances of president candidates debate into written text. Themajor purpose of descriptive research is description of the state of affairs as itexists at present. The instrument of collecting data is video recording of DebatCapres Cawapres Jokowi Jk- Prabowo Hatta at Metro TV on July 5, 2014.Particular attention is given to candidate’s use of bald on record, positivepoliteness, negative politeness, off record and do not do speech act or do the FTA(face threatening act) as defined by Brown and Levinson theory. The focus of thepaper is on the types of politeness strategies that used in debate, the dominant typeof politeness strategies, and the reason of dominant type usage in debate. Theresult showed that the most dominant type is Positive politeness (61,53%). Thenthere was also Negative politeness (30,76%), On record (3,84%), Off record(3,84%) and do not do the FTA (0%). The president candidates mostly usedpositive politeness because want to reduce face-threatening act besides how thetwo candidates can be conveyed smoothly without making one party feelsthreatened.

Abstract

The study deals with the code mixing in HitamPutih Talk Show Program on Trans 7.The objectives of study were to identify the types of code mixing used, to find out themost dominant type of code mixing used, and to describe the reasons of the codemixing used in the talk show. The data consisted of three episodes of HitamPutihTalk Show on April – October 2014. The findings show that there were 116insertions (32, 86%), 149 alternations (42, 2%), 88 congruent lexicalizations (24,92%). The most dominant type of code mixing was alternation becausethe host oftenclarified the guest’s statement to make the audience more understand what the guestsaid before, so they combined their speech with other language.

Abstract

The study deals with the techniques of translation on thesis abstracts inEconomics Department. The objectives of study were to identify the types oftranslation techniques, to find out the most dominant type of translationtechniques used, and to describe the reasons of the translation techniques used intranslating thesis abstract. The study used descriptive qualitative design.Nazir(1998: 34) states that descriptive qualitative is a method of research thatmakes the description of the situation of events or occurrences clearer. It isunderstood that descriptive qualitative is a method of research which provides thedescription of situation, events or occurrences, so this method is an intention toaccumulate the basic data. Qualitative research involves analysis of data such aswords and phrases written in abstracts. The data were taken from twentytranslated thesis abstracts of Economic Department. The findings show that therewere eight techniques of eighteen techniques used in thesis abstracts. The mostdominant type of translation techniques was established equivalent due to thetranslator intention to avoid misunderstanding by using the dictionaries andparticular equivalent known by target language. It is recommended that in doingany translation, the most essential thing is to keep the meaning or the message ofthe source language remains the same when it is being translated into the targetlanguage.
