Abstract

This study aims at finding out the tenor configurations that exist in the campaign speeches of two Democratic Party presidential candidates 2016 by using four aspects of tenor and it is to find out how the way the social relationship is played by addressee and addresser in political arena. Tenor configurations in campaign speeches of two Democratic Party presidential candidates is done by theory of Systemic Functional Linguistics. The use of tenor is purposed to make readers understand the speech easily and persuade the readers to do something as the speech means. This research used descriptive quantitative method. The data of this study were taken from some sources in the internet. The data were the transcripts of four campaign speeches by two Democratic presidential candidates that were delivered in different places. The writer focused on the analysis of aspects of tenor in campaign speeches by two Democratic Party presidential candidates; Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders, and finally found the most dominant configuration that appears in the campaign speeches. The writer found that from the four aspects of tenor the campaign speeches mostly used configuration [Formal/Equal/Positive/Infrequent].

Abstract

The study deals with violating maxims by Toba Batak sellers and buyers in Parluasan traditional market. The objectives of the study are to find out the types of maxims are violated  and to describe the implications of violating maxims by Toba Batak sellers and buyers in Parluasan Traditional Market Pematangsiantar.This research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The data were the utterances between sellers and buyers from 30  conversations. The data were collected by recording the conversations. There were 117 utterances that violated the maxims used by Toba Batak sellers and buyers. The results showed that all types of maxim were violated; 58 utterances violated the maxim of quantity, 12 utterances violated the maxim of quality, 20 utterances violated the maxim of relation, and 27 utterances violated the maxim of manner. The implications of violating maxims that used by sellers and buyers were to show respect, to create hyperbole and irony, to change a topic, to keep a secret, and to create humors.

Abstract

This study focused on finding out the cultural values of Toba Batak in Bulu Turak Oral Tradition in Simanindo, Kab.Samosir. The objectives of this study were to find out the cultural values of Toba Batak, to describe the realization of cultural values linguistically and to describe the reason of cultural values of Toba Batak  realization in bulu turak oral tradition. This research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative design.The data were 29 utterances of cultural values of Toba Batak that were taken from bulu turak transcription.The findings of this research were nine cultural values of Toba Batak was containing kinship 17%, religion 13%, extended family 20%, respect 10%, wealth 6%, modernization 3%, justice 3%, nurture 6%, and conflict 24%. The most dominant cultural values of Toba Batak is conflict 24%. The realization of cultural values of Toba Batak linguistically was described by the representation of experience was containing, mental process, verbal process, relational process, and the last finding was the reason of cultural values of Toba Batak realization because of sociocultural of character ancient, the character’s love, and believe to the character creature ( mula jadi nabolon ).

Abstract

This research is aimed at describing persuasive strategies in woman cosmetics advertisement, elaborating the ways of the strategies are used and investigating the reason for the use of strategies. The study is based on a descriptive qualitative method, The researcher analyzed through describing and explaining data based on persuasive strategies by Aristotle (1854).There are about 50 samples of woman cosmetics in skin whitening product from different brand. Those advertisements are in the form of video taken from the official website of the product, youtube, and watching the advertisement in television. The result of this study found that there were 32 utterances that categorized as Ethos, 12 as Pathos, and 6 as Logos. There are two process happen in this persuasive strategies,The Elaboration Likelihood Model (Central & Peripheral Route) and Heuristic Systematic Model (Heuristically Processing & Systematically Processing). Central Route 31, Peripheral Route 19. HeuristicallyProcessing 12 and Systematically Processing 38. Reasons for the use of Central Route in the advertisement should be relevant, any facts. Peripheral Route, irrelevant, and no fact. Heuristically Processing, message by expert or endorse by artist, not always giving facts. Systematically Processing, relevant, motivate the costumers, any facts.

Abstract

The objectives of the study are to investigate and explain about love languages found and used in the Upside Down movie. The data were analyzed by finding the words or statements of main character in the movie script. Chapman’s theory of love languages was applied. Based on its form, Chapman divides love languages into 5 kinds, they are (1) words of affirmation, (2) quality time, (3) receiving gifts, (4) acts of service, and (5) physical touch. The method used in this research was descriptive qualitative. The data were analyzed by finding the words or statements by use main character in the movie script. The result shows that, there are four kinds of love languages used. The findings show not all kinds of Love Languages used in the movie. According to the meaning of each kind, Acts of Service wasn’t used in the movie because the theme of the movie is about love struggle, and love languages has an important role because the using of it is to build up the relationship.
