Abstract

The role of sea transportation is crucial, particularly in the context of merchant shipping, as it can transport large loads efficiently. Sea-watch duties require significant concentration, precision, and high responsibility when sailing. Skilled sailors must be capable of making sound decisions to ensure the ship’s safety. Unfortunately, many accidents occur on board due to negligence during watch duties. This study employs a qualitative approach, with data presented through descriptive analysis. The findings of this research include: 1) efforts to improve watch discipline on the bridge; 2) the implementation of watch duties when entering narrow shipping lanes, highlighting what watch officers must do to prevent collisions; and 3) an examination of the reasons behind watch officers’ negligence concerning navigational instruments.

Abstract

Shipping, or sea transportation, is an essential component of the broader transportation industry, capable of adapting to future changes. It is characterized by its ability to conduct mass transportation effectively. One important tool used in this field is Radar. This navigation device helps ships detect weather conditions and measure distances from certain objects such as debris, boats, and other potential hazards. This research employs a qualitative method to explore the use of Radar on board the MV Tanto Salam. The findings of the study are as follows: 1) Uses of Radar on Board the MV Tanto Salam: Radar serves several functions, including navigation and lane guidance, collision prevention, monitoring weather and sea conditions, detecting buoys and navigation markers, monitoring small and unexpected objects, contributing to automation and integration systems, and assisting with maneuvering and docking at ports; 2) Obstacles in Using Radar on Board the MV Tanto Salam: The study identifies several challenges, including weather disturbances, radio wave interference, blind spots or Radar shadows, limited close-range detection, dependence on manual settings, reduced detection capabilities for small objects, misidentification of objects, technical and maintenance issues, and reliance on operator skills; and 3) Solutions to Overcome Radar Challenges for Enhanced Shipping Safety on MV Tanto Salam: Proposed solutions include enhancing technology through automatic clutter reduction, implementing more sophisticated signal filters, and integrating Radar with other navigation devices. Training for ship crews is also essential to improve their understanding and operation of Radar, particularly in adverse weather conditions or interference-prone areas. Installing additional navigation aids, such as the Automatic Identification System (AIS) and GPS, can also support radar detecting other ships' positions and surrounding objects.

Abstract

Safety at sea is a top priority in the maritime industry. Accidents can occur on land or aboard ships, often due to negligence regarding safety protocols. An analysis of accidents reveals that each incident has a causal factor. Ship operations involve various tasks, both light and heavy, which pose risks to crew safety. This study employs a qualitative methodology, utilizing direct observation of the ship and conducting interviews to gather necessary research data, along with reading and referencing various materials. The findings of this study are as follows: 1) Accidents involving crew members often result from failing to adhere to established safety standards, specifically, those outlined in the Safety Management System (SMS) on the ship; 2) The consequences of such accidents can include eye infections caused by rust or corrosion fragments entering the eyes. Affected crew members must receive special treatment on land after initial care is provided by the 2nd officer, which includes rinsing the eyes with an eyewash solution; and 3) To improve safety for the crew, the Captain should instruct all crew members to review the procedures outlined in the Safety Management System (SMS) regularly. Additionally, the Captain should emphasize these procedures during meetings and actively monitor any potentially hazardous work activities.

Abstract

Marine pollution is a condition that endangers the lives of marine life, natural resources, the health of marine ecosystems, and human health. To reduce marine pollution produced by ships, all crew members (ABK) are responsible and have the necessary knowledge and skills. Garbage Management Plan is a plan for handling waste. This includes understanding the types of waste and how to manage it effectively so that it can be separated and disposed of according to its kind. The author conducted research on a ship based on qualitative research, where the author has carried out sea practice for more than a year on the SV. Patrona 118. In this sea practice the author observed the use of the Garbage Management Plan on the Patrona 118 Supply Vessel according to MARPOL Annex V. The results of this study are: 1) To protect the marine environment effectively, the ship's crew must increase awareness and discipline in following these regulations. Companies need to ensure that all types of waste, especially plastic, are managed and disposed of properly by applicable provisions; and 2) Although the majority of the crew have understood and complied with the existing procedures, increased supervision, and training are essential steps to achieve knowledge of the entire crew and full compliance and prevention of marine pollution by MARPOL 73/78 Annex V.

Abstract

Groundwater quality in coastal areas is responsive due to the interaction of fresh water with seawater. Groundwater quality monitoring studies in coastal area needs to be done regularly to prevent natural disasters and clean water crises in the future. In this study, measurements of groundwater physics parameter were carried out, i.e. electrical conductivity to analyze groundwater quality. The interpolation method based on Geographic Information Systems (GIS) was used to obtain values between each sample point to produce a spatial distribution map of groundwater quality over the research location. The results of the study showed that groundwater quality in the coastal area of Durung Village was generally still quite good with conductivity values between 689 - 3,391 µS/cm. However, for the locations which is nearby the coast such as in the location of Malahayati Merchant Marine Polytechnic, it was indicated that it had been contaminated by seawater with the highest conductivity values between 5,763 – 6.270 µS/cm.
