Abstract

This study examined the impact of doing The First Spiritual Exercises (FSE) on positive and negative attitudes toward God and mental health, as measured using the Attitudes toward God Scale (ATGS-9) and the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-Being Scale (WEMWBS). Adopting a quasi-experimental research design involving 90 the FSE participants as the intervention group and 119 individuals who did not participate in the FSE as the control group, this study tested the hypotheses that doing the FSE increases Positive ATG scores, reduces Negative ATG scores, and increases Mental Health scores. The data analysis of pre-test and post-test of 164 participants (82 people from the LRP and non-LRP groups respectively), who took part fully in this study, which was conducted from 11 May to 7 June 2020, confirmed the hypotheses. Furthermore, the data shows that the FSE participation can explain 13.7% of the variability of the change in the combined score of Positive ATG, ATG Negative and Metal Health. This study provides empirical evidence on the impact of doing the Spiritual Exercises through a quantitative approach using an experimental design. In addition, this research contributes to the development of studies on spiritual practices by synergizing spiritual services, particularly the Spiritual Exercises, with research activities. It also shows that the ATGS-9 and WEMWBS scales are useful for measuring the impact of spiritual activities and services.

Abstract

How can we relate the experience of encountering God during the Spiritual Exercises and our experiences after we return to our daily life? Juxtapositioning the two, we can find that sacramental imagination is the bridge between the Spiritual Exercises and the realities of daily life. The Spiritual Exercises provide us with the spiritual discipline to make our sacramental imagination alive. It is also this sacramental imagination that we relive every time we participate in a sacramental celebration. In the Spiritual Exercises, through applying our sacramental imagination, we are invited to engage with the development of our commitment to God. The level of awareness in this regard will be an indicator for the flourishing of our aesthetic self. Similarly, in the life of the sacraments of the Church, our polished and trained sacramental imagination will guide us to see the beauty of becoming a person ever more committed to the love of God and others.

Abstract

The word "excellence" which comes from the Latin word "excellentia," meaning quality of being extremely good. According to Deretic (2011), human excellence can be defined as the qualities of a person that make them outstand in human activities or can also be referred to as moral excellence. Without human excellence, future science and ethics will have a difficult task in evaluating such excellence correctly. Jesuit schools have one of their goals in education to form human excellence for their students. Father Arrupe, SJ stated that human excellence to be achieved by students is to become men and women for and with others. This is then supported by Father Kolvenbach, SJ's opinion that men and women for and with others are people who have the 4C character, namely competence, compassion, conscience, and commitment. This work will study the formation of human excellence with the 4Cs aspect in education. The methodology used in this work is a systematic literature review. This research collects information from books, book sections, journal articles, conference reports, and conference proceedings. The search keywords for this study are human excellence, competence, compassion, conscience, commitment, Jesuit education, Ignatius Loyola, Ignatian pedagogy paradigm, educate magis, and Spiritual Exercises. The result of this work is Jesuit education forms human excellence through 4Cs character. The 4Cs characters in education forms human excellence by developing the whole or complete abilities of an individual, not only for themselves but also for others, as a holistic person, and by forming a deep relationship with God as the creator. Especially, Ignatian Pedagogy Paradigm could form 4Cs character through context, experience, reflection, action, and evaluation steps.

Abstract

Humans can never live alone, but they will always need other people in their lives. Human philosophy calls this intersubjectivity. Humans are always part of a larger community than just themselves. It is not surprising that Aristotle said that humans cannot live in isolation. From here, Christian ethics guides us that respecting others is part of our faith and that our fellow human beings are equal creations of God – not limited by any criteria created by humans. However, Jesus demanded more from His followers. Not only to understand "who is a neighbour", but Jesus wanted His followers to "be a neighbour" to others, even to "enemies". From this, the so-called "Spirituality of Universal Brotherhood" was born, where this "Spirituality of Universal Brotherhood" is ultimately not just a mere "concept", but a "common project" that is constantly lived and never ends in this life to realise a harmonious, peaceful, and salvific common life for everyone.
