Abstract

The widespread misperception about identity has apparently led to identity absolutism that is also reflected in the quest for absolute truth. The consequence of this mindset has placed mankind in a “confederation of cultures” (Amartya Sen) that ultimately fails to deliver a peaceful and just coexistence. As if human suffering is yet to be hardened, globalization brought more burden into the drama. We are like destined to watch human civilization split into various conflicting civilizations. As mankind hasreached an unprecedented complex Lebenswelt (EdmundHusserl),we need to develop a kind of global civilization (to reconcile the effects of  globalization) that is more just in order for the human race to retain itsexistence and co-existence.Ways and means need to be determined for that purpose, however, argumentative dialogue still seems to be the main avenue to achieve that end. For its own sake Indonesia has the obligationto contribute to the development of a more just global civilization. Such obligation is indeed implied in the Preamble of its 1945 Constitution. Otherwise Indonesians risk to be at the mercy of arbitrary forces of globalization. Nevertheless, Indonesia's capacity to participate at and contribute to the process of developing a more just civilization depends very much on improvement of the qualities of its citizens, which in turn requires adjustment of mindset with the ongoing process. Efforts to adjust our mindset will need the rendering of subjects on social ethics (budi pekerti), world history and global geography starting with the elementary school. Only with reasoning citizens will Indonesia be able to participate in the development of a more just civilization and thereby also improve its ownwell being.

Abstract

It is often claimed that violence goes hand in hand with monotheistic religions. While the facts of it is undeniable, this article seeks to argue that there is no inherent correlation between the two. On the contrary, monotheism has proved to bear the liberative and emancipatory power. It has also paved the way towards universal ethics. It is true, however, that the structure of monotheistic religion oftentimes leads to the need for selfdefinition, which in turn, may result in ostracizing the 'other'. One of the tasks of theology is precisely to constantly remind the people of tacit interests and exessive need for self-definition.

Abstract

In his linguistic theory Ferdinand de Saussure distinguished between language in proper sense (la langue) such as English, France, Indonesian etc. and language in awider sense (la langage). Both however are systems of signs that fall into semiotics. It is in the second sense, that we can assume religion as a certain kind of language or as having proper language of its own. In the spirit of religious dialog in recent years, in which many different religions try out to communicate each other, the significance of religious language becomes apparent. It is urgent therefore, to clarify the meaning as well as the role of this language in theprocess of dialog. This article assumes that in each religions we can notice two kinds of language, which function quite differently; one is 'to express' the collective passion of the people, 'referring to' the religious reality and their experiences of it, whereas the other is 'to explicate' the meaning of that same reality, 'inducing' to discourses, in order to find proper conceptswhich will widen their comprehension of the religious notions. Only trough improving this second kind of language, which happens both in theological discourse and the study of holy scriptures, religions can improve their ability to communicate each other.

Abstract

Romantic heritage, as a philosophical current, is still central to our recent culture. The ecological issues and pluralism not only exist in the realm crucial problem of the weakness in political commitment, but first of all it is that of ethics and moral. Thus, it is the problem of inner voice, personal and spiritual. Romanticism disagree with rationalism and materialism  epistemology, subsequently, they look for 'philosophy of nature' as a source and their basic worldview. Prophetically speaking, the primacy of intuition, imagination, feeling and passion, as an aesthetics terminology, are the words which they strived to answer the problem. The wisdom of nature have teach our human beings. Back to 'noble savage' is an imperative action, because history has teach us.
