Abstract

The association of microfinance and entrepreneurship is increasingly recognized as a tool for the socio-economic development of dawdling regions. By contrast, most of the studies on the micro level have primarily focused on poverty alleviation and spending of loans on living standards and reached conflicting findings. Evidence on the impact of microfinance on entrepreneurial development in different regions has conflicting results. There is growing academic interest in geographical variations and a consensus that geographical disparities exist. This paper investigates the impact of microfinance programs offered by government and non-government organizations on the profitability, employment and sales growth of microenterprises operating in Pakistan. Using a sample of borrowers (treatment group) and respondents on the waiting list (control group) operating microenterprises, we provide evidence that the impact on the profitability of microenterprises is positive, with a higher mark for NGO borrowers. Moreover, the study's novelty compares the microenterprise industry and the findings that using loans in service sector business makes individuals more likely to move from a low-wage labourer to a more profitable entrepreneurship status. Our findings will help policymakers and academics identify the most relevant intervention areas.

Abstract

Parenting style has a great influence on child development. Researchers are progressively aware of the importance of parenting style and its impact on children's upbringing. The current study was meant to examine the effect of authoritative parenting styles versus authoritarian, permissive and flexible parenting styles on medical students' emotional intelligence and personality traits. The study was a cross-sectional survey piloted at the University of Haripur from Nov 2021 to May 2022. Ensuing purposive sampling, two hundred medical students, both males and females, without any limitation of age, were approached at medical colleges of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The parental authority questionnaire, Emotional intelligence scale and Big five personality inventory were used for data gathering. Pearson correlation analysis was computed to get association amid study variables. Linear regression analysis depicted that authoritarian parenting style has a significant negative effect on emotional intelligence (β=.50, p<.001), extraversion (β= -.57, p<.001), agreeableness (β= -.53, p<.001) and conscientiousness. Results also depicted that authoritative parenting style has a significant positive effect on emotional intelligence (β= .48, p<.001), extraversion (β= .40, p<.001), agreeableness (β= .45, p<.001), and on conscientiousness (β= .45, p<.001). Whereas authoritarian parenting style has a significant positive impact on neuroticism (β= .47, p<.001) and authoritative parenting has a significant negative effect on neuroticism (β= -.52, p<.001). Parenting style has been proven to be a significant contributor to enhancing emotional intelligence and promoting positive personality traits. The authoritative parenting style promotes emotional intelligence, extraversion, agreeableness and conscientiousness. Authoritarian parenting style is highly responsible for the rise in neuroticism and decreased emotional intelligence.

Abstract

This paper focuses on heterotopic shift and dialectical evolution of Lahore. This shift and evolution are brought about by psychological, social, political, cultural, and religious forces that transformed this city from an ancient city to a postmodern one. The intermingling of local, colonized and foreign colonizing ideological and social forces marks a thoroughly transformative impact on the psychology of the people in the global capitalistic city space. The issue of spatial and temporal shift in Nevile’s memoir Lahore: A Sentimental Journey creates spaces of socio psychological conflict and, hence, marks an invisible and indivisible drift between the city and its dwellers by creating an agglomerative urban culture. This cultural turn has led to the emergence of new multicultural city imaginaries. To trace the heterotopic shift and dialectical evolution of the city space, this article employs the theoretical insights of Foucault. By utilizing the new historicist reading, this research analyzes Nevile’s Lahore: A Sentimental Journey, in which literature and society shape the space in today’s metropolitan dwellers’ life.

Abstract

Contraception is a birth control method to prevent unwanted pregnancies. Many developing countries have maintained their birth rates in the last quarter despite various family planning options. Pakistan is also struggles to join this race by inculcating vibrant population growth measures. In this context, many social, cultural, and geographical trends have key roles to play in increasing contraceptive prevalence and acceptance trends in Pakistani society. Education has played an important role in the women's autonomy and effective communication with their husbands about the number of children and contraceptive use. The current study was tried to explore the factors associated (regions, place of residence, and wealth index) with contraceptive use and to find out the relationship between mothers’ education and the adoptability of female birth control methods. The secondary data of 13558 ever-married female respondents aged 15–49 years from the Pakistan Demographic and Health Survey (PDHS) 2017–18 was taken for this study. The stratified sampling technique was used in the survey. Bivariate analysis was applied to investigate the relationship between mothers' level of education and contraceptive use. A Chi-square model was used to see the association with other factors. The study results revealed a positive relationship between maternal education and contraceptive use. Results have indicated that the increased education level of mothers is closely associated with contraceptive use. However, more than half of uneducated mothers (62.1%) did not use contraception. By analyzing the results, it is concluded that educated mothers play a vital role in decreasing fertility rates by using different fertility control methods, so education remains the key factor in increasing the prevalence of contraceptive methods. Along with other facilities regarding birth control, there is a dire need to increase the literacy rate. Considering the study results, it is a prerequisite to designing policies and education reforms to promote birth control through education.

Abstract

The issues related to counterfeiting and counterfeit purchase intentions have remained a key concern for researchers as well as practitioners in the marketing field. This study aims to assess the purchase intentions of individuals towards counterfeit products by explaining the relationship between the factors: ethical perception, integrity, status consumption, and fashion consciousness. A sample of 334 individuals was surveyed by using a simple random sampling technique, and the data was analyzed using SPSS. The results of the study show that consumers don't consider it unethical to purchase counterfeit products, as most of the respondents have knowingly purchased these products. The status associated with counterfeit products is found to be an important factor. The consumption of counterfeit products is still a new area of research in developing economies. The majority of the previous research has been conducted in developed economies. This study will provide insight into the underlying factors that motivate individuals toward counterfeit intentions
