Abstract

Diarrhea is a serious and dangerous condition that could be caused by Escherichia coli. Sungkai is a plant that easily could be found in Indonesia, especially in Central Borneo. The young leaf of sungkai usually used as traditional medicine and potentially as an antibacterial. Aim of this study was to determine the antibacterial activity from the ethanol extract of sungkai (Peronema canescens Jack) leaf to inhibit the growth of E. coli, examined by Kirby-Bauer’s disc method. Post-test only control group design was the method used in this study. The ethanol extract of sungkai (P. canescens) leaf was tested with various concentration (25%, 50%, 75% and 100%). The results showed that the E. coli’s growth could be inhibited by ethanol extract of sungkai (P. canescens) leaf with a concentration of 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%, proved by 3,75 mm, 3,5 mm, 3,5 mm and 7,75 mm inhibition zone in each of concentration sequentially, with the effective concentration of 25%. It is concluded that the ethanol extract of sungkai (P. canescens) leaf could inhibit the growth of E. coli. Further research should be developed to determine the minimum levels needed to obtain the antibacterial activity of sungkai extract.

Abstract

Water is one of the main needs of life. Long term water shortages can cause disasters. Drought is one of the most common natural disasters that occur due to reduced rainfall and the geological structure of the soil. Gunung Kidul Regency is an area that often experiences drought due to geological soil structure in the form of karst. This study aimed to discuss the efforts undertaken to reduce the risk of drought in the Gunung Kidul Regency, Yogyakarta. This research used descriptive method with literature study approach. The results showed several efforts that could be implemented to minimize the risk of drought, namely making wells whose water sources come from underground rivers, utilizing springs and constructing rainwater reservoirs.

Abstract

Coastal and marine ecosystems are productive ecosystems. Socioeconomically, coastal communities rely heavily on the utilization of existing resources in their region. Increased coastal community activity may affect the viability and balance of future resource requirements. This research aimed to determine the relation of coastal community perception about Marine Management Area (MMA) and coastal community participation with management of West Lampung MMA. The sample of this research were 248 respondents. Sampling used convenience sampling technique. Data collection was done by using perception questionnaire and participation then analysed by prerequisite test. Prerequisite test results showed normal and homogeneous distributed data with regression equation of Ŷ = 28,478 + 0,667X. Calculation of correlation coefficient showed the value of rxy = 0.582, it means that the strength of the relationship between variables x and y was categorized as intermediate. There was a positive correlation between the perception of coastal community about MMA and the participation of coastal communities with management of West Lampung MMA.

Abstract

Garbage is a result caused by human work so that in our daily life as humans we are always faced with what is called garbage. Waste disposal and processing methods are most widely applied in several cities in Indonesia, including Bengkulu City, which is located at the Final Processing Site (TPA). The existence of the TPA will have an impact on the environment. The problem that is important to be resolved is about environmental pollution, especially waste. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact that occurs due to the existence of TPA Air Sebakul Bengkulu City on the environment and local communities. This research method used literature-based methods, namely research to gather a variety of clarity of the problem in accordance with the research object. The result showed that the existence of TPA Air Sebakul had an impact on surrounding community in any aspects including economy, health, education, the environment, and social communities.

Abstract

Jangkaran Village that located in a coastal area, has the potential for sea-water intrusion to occur through groundwater. Mangroves have major benefits of preventing sea water intrusion in coastal and estuary areas. This study aimed to determine the ecological function of mangroves in the prevention of sea water intrusion and the relationship of groundwater quality around coastal areas with the presence of mangroves. The study was conducted around Jangkaran and Karanganyar Village. The methods used were survey and mapping, groundwater sampling, and laboratory tests. Analysis was carried out based on literature and laboratory results. Laboratory test parameters used were pH, turbidity, TDS, EC and salinity. The results showed the analyzed water quality parameters were not affected by sea water intrusion due to activity in the southern sea of Java. Test parameters showed results below the saltwater threshold. Mangrove cover can be one of the factors causing obstruction of sea water intrusion into community wells. However, the physical quality of the water was inadequate and the residents dug wells were not used for domestic needs, only for urgent purposes. The poor physical quality of water was indicated to occur due to the large number of pond activities around the study area.
