Abstract

Cholesterol is a complex problem for humans when LDL levels dominate causing heart disease and hypertension as a result of atherosclerosis. Prevalence in the United States adults has increased cholesterol levels > by 12%. Central Kalimantan cholesterol sufferers data reached 54.2%. Cholesterol 2/3 is produced by the liver while 1/3 is absorbed by the digestive system from the food consumed. Coffee does not contain cholesterol, but coffee contains cafestol and fat- soluble kahweol, often called diterpenes. The purpose of this review is to determine the effect of coffee on increasing cholesterol levels. This study uses a systematic review approach with the keywords coffee, cholesterol levels, and the effect of coffee consumption, with the PRISMA method. From the search results, obtained 14 journals discussing the effect of coffee consumption on cholesterol levels and how much coffee consumption can affect cholesterol levels, and the effect of coffee consumption on LDL levels. A total of 12 journals (85.2%) stated that there was a significant effect while 2 journals (14.2%) stated that there was no significant effect. As for the results of a literature review, it can be concluded that there is an effect of coffee consumption on cholesterol levels, the amount of coffee consumption that can affect cholesterol levels, and the effect of coffee on LDL levels

Abstract

Lanjut usia merupakan seseorang yang memiliki usia lebih dari atau sama dengan 60 tahun. Usia tersebut sangat rentan dengan berbagai macam penyakit. Umumnya penyakit yang timbul karena adanya proses penuaan yang menurunkan fungsi dari organ-organ tubuh. Salah satu penyakit yang banyak diderita oleh lansia adalah hipertensi. Hipertensi merupakan salah satu penyakit yang dapat menyebabkan komplikasi jika tidak segera diatasi. Hipertensi yang tidak terkendali dapat menyebabkan serangan jantung, hipertrofi jantung, hingga gagal jantung. Salah satu penyebab tingginya kejadian angka hipertensi adalah kurangnya kesadaran atau pengetahuan yang dimiliki oleh penderita, sehingga berujung kepada komplikasi penyakit. Hal tersebut menyebabkan hipertensi sering disebut sebagai “silent killer”, karena kuranganya kesadaran dari penderita hipertensi yang tidak terkontrol dapat menyebabkan kelainan pembuluh darah hingga pecahnya pembuluh darah kapiler di otak atau stroke bahkan hingga menyebabkan kematian. Berdasarkan hasil survey yang telah dilakukan hampir 50% lansia yang berada di Panti Werda Sinta Rangkang mengalami hipertensi dan memiliki pengetahuan yang kurang terhadap hipertensi baik mulai dari penyebab hingga cara pencegahannya, utamanya di usia lanjut. Oleh karena itu, dalam upaya pencegahan hipertensi pada lansia, pengabdian masyarakat Departemen Fisiologi Fakultas Kedokteran Universitas Palangka Raya mengadakan penyuluhan terhadap lansia di Panti Werda Sinta Rangkang guna meningkatkan pengetahuan mengenai hipertensi pada lansia. Harapan dari pengabdian masyarakat yang akan dilakukan adalah dengan meningkatnya pengetahuan para lansia, maka kejadian hipertensi di Panti Werda Sinta Rangkang dapat dicegah, sehingga tidak sampai menimbulkan komplikasi.

Abstract

Diarrhea is a serious and dangerous condition that could be caused by Escherichia coli. Sungkai is a plant that easily could be found in Indonesia, especially in Central Borneo. The young leaf of sungkai usually used as traditional medicine and potentially as an antibacterial. Aim of this study was to determine the antibacterial activity from the ethanol extract of sungkai (Peronema canescens Jack) leaf to inhibit the growth of E. coli, examined by Kirby-Bauer’s disc method. Post-test only control group design was the method used in this study. The ethanol extract of sungkai (P. canescens) leaf was tested with various concentration (25%, 50%, 75% and 100%). The results showed that the E. coli’s growth could be inhibited by ethanol extract of sungkai (P. canescens) leaf with a concentration of 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%, proved by 3,75 mm, 3,5 mm, 3,5 mm and 7,75 mm inhibition zone in each of concentration sequentially, with the effective concentration of 25%. It is concluded that the ethanol extract of sungkai (P. canescens) leaf could inhibit the growth of E. coli. Further research should be developed to determine the minimum levels needed to obtain the antibacterial activity of sungkai extract.
