Abstract

The practice of celebrating birthdays has become a site of contestation in religious discourse, where the hadith tashabbuh is used as the key argument for prohibition. This debate has not only occurred in traditional spheres but has also spread to the digital realm. This study aims to analyze the discourse on birthday prohibition based on the hadith tashabbuh meme on Instagram through the lens of Norman Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) model. The findings of this study reveal two crucial points. First, the birthday prohibition meme exposes the mechanism of simplifying the meaning of the hadith by disconnecting (decontextualizing) the hadith tashabbuh from its original military/situational context. At the textual level, the hadith is reduced to an imperative slogan supported by linguistic strategies that tend to judge or blame, and reinforced by algorithmic strategies that trigger polarization (high engagement) at the level of discourse practice. Second, at the level of social practice, the ideological construction in this discourse actively reaffirms the Salafi Puritan ideology that focuses on purifying Islamic teachings. This discourse functions as a practice of religious identity boundary-work that creates a dichotomy between true Muslims and negligent Muslims. Thus, the hadith tashabbuh has been transformed into a digital tool of power that gives high normative power to narrow interpretations, forcing the audience to negotiate their religious identity in the digital space.

Abstract

This article examines the identity of ḥadīth interpretation at Masjid Pogung Dalangan (MPD), a mosque known for its active engagement in both conventional and digital daʿwah and its affiliation with the Salafi–Wahhabi movement. An academic problem arises from the tendency for ḥadīths used in daʿwah activities to be presented in a partial and predominantly textual manner. This study aims to analyze how practices of ḥadīth presentation at MPD shape patterns of understanding and the congregation's religious identity. The research employs a library-based approach complemented by field observation and a review of relevant literature. The findings indicate that the materiality of ḥadīth readings—displayed through LCD screens, posters, and social media—plays an active role in shaping the congregation’s theological and practical understanding. The limited presentation of ḥadīths to matn excerpts and translations without sharḥ encourages a textual and literal mode of reading, aligning with Salafi daʿwah strategies that emphasize textual clarity, simplicity of message, and effective transmission of religious teachings.

Abstract

The strictness of the issue of ikhtilāṭ as part of the culture of the da'wah institution has shifted among the activists of the da'wah al-Jami' UIN Alauddin Makassar campus. The pattern of interaction between men and women has changed from very strict to more relaxed. This paper aims to examine the transformation and reception of the hadiths of ikhtilāṭ among the campus da'wah activists of al-Jami' UIN Alauddin Makassar. In dissecting the research problem, this study uses the theory of reception and sociological knowledge developed by Karl Mannheim. The results of this study conclude that the transformation of the issue of ikhtilāṭ in the al-jami' campus da'wah institution is inseparable from the declaration of religious moderation that has taken root at UIN Alauddin Makassar. In the transformation process, two classifications were found as the triggers of their attitude shift. The 2006-2019 period is a phase that represents the strictness of the issue of ikhtilāṭ which is expressed through organizational policies, including: the mandatory use of hijab (curtain barrier), polarization of the board and polarization of the secretariat. While the 2020-2024 period represents an open attitude in the issue of khtilath by placing the law of khtilath situationally and conditionally (tawassuth). This transformation occurred as a logical consequence of the shift in the reception of the hadith of khtilath from a textual to a contextual understanding paradigm. The fundamental difference between the phases of the 2006-2019 period and the 2020-2024 period also affects the different dimensions of the meaning of ikhtilāṭ in the perspective of Mennheim's sociology of knowledge, be it in the realm of objective, expressive or documentary meaning.

Abstract

This article examines the reinterpretation of the ḥadīth concerning the destruction of the ummah at the hands of foolish youths from Quraysh (Halāk ummatī ‘alā yaday ughaylimah sufahā’ min Quraysh) in a sermon delivered by Gus Kautsar, a young preacher from the pesantren (Islamic boarding school) milieu. Utilizing a hermeneutical approach that includes linguistic analysis, micro-context (asbāb al-wurūd), and macro-context (the social structure of the Quraysh tribe during the Prophet’s ﷺ time), this study demonstrates that Gus Kautsar’s substitution of the phrase “youths of Quraysh” with “foolish gus” represents an effort to contextualize the ḥadīth’s meaning within contemporary social realities. In pesantren culture, gus—the sons of respected religious leaders—often inherit symbolic capital without the guarantee of scholarly or moral competence, much like the Quraysh elite in history. By emphasizing dynamic meaning, Gus Kautsar revives the ethical message of the ḥadīth as a form of internal social critique, showing that classical texts can remain relevant through contextual and ethical readings.

Abstract

This study examines the practice of living hadith within the Jamaah Tabligh (JT) movement, positioning it as a religious actor undergoing transformation in the digital sphere, particularly through the platform YouTube. Theoretically, the study is grounded in the question of how hadith, traditionally embodied through oral transmission, face-to-face interaction, and collective spiritual formation, is re-mediated within the ecosystem of digital media. It aims to analyze patterns of hadith representation, shifts in the structure of religious authority, and the theological as well as social implications of the digitalization of JT’s da‘wah activities. This research employs a qualitative approach, combining digital ethnography with content analysis. Data were collected through online observation of sermon videos on the “Jamaah Tablig Dunia” channel, along with analysis of audience interactions in the comment sections as sites for negotiating meaning and legitimizing authority. The findings indicate that JT’s presence on YouTube does not merely relocate conventional preaching into a new medium; rather, it reconfigures the modes through which hadith is presented and authorized. Hadith continues to function as a form of practical pedagogy internalized through collective discipline rather than as an object of textual-critical inquiry. Nevertheless, digital mediation shifts the basis of authority from embodied relationships to forms grounded in visuality, channel legitimacy, and platform algorithmic logic. This adaptation preserves theological substance while generating new dynamics between tradition and digital media rationality in contemporary Islamic practice.
