Abstract

While trade policies are important for international trade, the significance of the link between language and trade cannot be ignored. Understanding the language dimensions of trade is essential for assessing the broader impact of the One Belt One Road Initiative (OBORI). This study aims to: (1) analyse the perceived influence of the OBORI on China and Russia; (2) examine the current status of language strategies by both countries within the OBORI’s multilingual framework; and (3) explore the strategic link between language and international exchange, particularly through language strategies. Questionnaire data from Russian university students were analysed to assess preferences for English and Chinese language courses. The findings suggest that both languages are poised for continued relevance in the context of the OBORI in Russia. As China deepens its engagement with the OBORI, graduates with proficiency in Chinese language and cultural literacy will be increasingly sought after—especially within Russian institutions and industries. The results indicate that the growing importance of Chinese language in Russia’s tertiary sector, with long-term implications for international collaboration, trade readiness, and cultural diplomacy.

Abstract

This paper examines the syntactic behavior of causative constructions in Arabic, focusing on the unresolved issue of thematic role and case assignment due to the bi-clausal structure of these constructions. The central research question revolves around the structural position of the causee in Arabic causatives. While prior studies have broadly described causatives in Arabic, they have not sufficiently addressed the syntactic mechanisms underlying the positioning and licensing of the causee within a minimalist framework. This paper offers a novel analysis, grounded in native speaker judgments and syntactic diagnostics, revealing that the causee occupies a contrastive focus position. The findings show that while the thematic role of the causee is assigned by the embedded verb, its case is exceptionally marked by the matrix verb. The causee occupies a contrastive focus position that can host clitic-left dislocated (CLLD) DPs. The dislocated DP resumes a clitic rather than leaving a gap. However, unlike similar positions in matrix clauses, this position does not permit DP stacking. These results indicate that focus positions in Arabic are more structurally diverse than previously thought, with important implications for our understanding of information structure and case assignment in bi-clausal constructions.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the characteristics of the main characters in the folktale Asal Usul Kata Madura through the attitudinal system. This study was conducted because research on how emotion, moral judgments, and evaluations are expressed through language in Indonesian folklore is still very limited. Using the qualitative descriptive method, data were obtained through in-depth reading, identification of clauses containing evaluative elements, and grouping based on three attitude subsystems, namely affect, judgment, and appreciation. The results of the analysis show that affect is the most dominant form of attitude, particularly the expression of insecurity and dissatisfaction, accompanied by moral judgments through judgment, and a small amount of evaluation through appreciation. A total of 35 clauses were identified and analysed from the folklore, consisting of 10 data for Sang Hyang Tunggal, 16 data for Bendoro Gung, and 9 data for Raden Segoro, providing comprehensive data for mapping the attitudes of the main characters. This study concludes that language evaluation in Madurese folklore functions as a means of conveying moral and emotional messages that are passed down from generation to generation. Further studies are recommended to analyse more folklore to enrich the reader’s understanding of evaluative patterns in Indonesian cultural narratives. This study presents a detailed map of attitudes that reveals how character identities are constructed linguistically in the oral tradition of Madura, and offers a systematic model for interindividual analysis that can be applied to other regional folklore in Indonesia.

Abstract

The listening materials previously used in the Arabic Language Department were primarily based on recordings centered exclusively on Arab culture, with no integration of the learners’ native Indian cultural context. This cultural gap made the materials difficult for students to relate to and comprehend, particularly in an environment where Arabic is rarely encountered outside the classroom. To address this issue, the study employed an explanatory sequential mixed-methods design. The qualitative phase, consisting of classroom observations and instructor interviews, was conducted to identify limitations in the existing materials and to guide the development of culturally responsive listening prototypes. The subsequent quantitative phase used a quasi-experimental pre-test and post-test control group design to evaluate the effectiveness of the developed materials. The sample consisted of 30 male first-semester undergraduate students divided into experimental (n=15) and control (n=15) intact classes. Data were collected using an observation checklist, a semi-structured interview guide, and a validated 30-item listening comprehension test. The operational hypothesis proposed that students exposed to culturally integrated materials would demonstrate greater improvement in listening comprehension than those using traditional materials. The results confirmed that the original materials relied solely on Arab-Islamic historical narratives unfamiliar to learners. Guided by feedback and relevance principles, the materials were revised to include familiar contexts such as religions in India, Indian heroes, and local social issues while retaining exercises. Statistical analysis showed a significant difference between experimental and control post-test scores. Therefore, the null hypothesis was rejected and the alternative hypothesis accepted, demonstrating that materials enhanced listening comprehension.
