Abstract

This paper discusses premonitions with various meanings originating from the Ngaju Dayak Tribe. The text is free from grammatical errors, spelling mistakes, and punctuation errors. No changes in content have been made. Firasat, a type of folklore, is also a signifier based on daily experiences in the rivers and forests iconic to the island of Kalimantan. The language used is clear, objective, and value-neutral, with a formal register and precise word choice. The text adheres to conventional structure and formatting features, with consistent citation and footnote style. The sentences and paragraphs create a logical flow of information with causal connections between statements. Henri Louis Frédéric de Saussure researched the cultural richness as part of the vocal system, including language, tradition (grammaire générale), semiotics, and linguistic rhetoric. The research method analysed the linguistic study of premonitions in the context of Central Kalimantan through literature review (secondary sources) and interviews with three research subjects from Central Kalimantan as valid sources. The results indicate that Nganan Firasat has been a long-standing ritual, faithful and consistent to this day due to its embodiment of rich traditions. Not only is it a local tradition, but it also holds national and global significance, aligning with universal human values.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the researchers' curiosity about Michael Riffaterre's thoughts on the use of semiotics in poetry. Several previous researchers have also applied Riffaterre's theorem to song lyrics, poems, poetry, and local wisdom in various contexts. However, some of these researchers did not provide a complete presentation of Riffaterre's semiotic instruments, despite their involvement in various language-forming contexts. For instance, this research employs a qualitative research method using a literature search model. The language used is clear, objective, and value-neutral, with a formal register and precise word choice. The literature study involves secondary sources, such as recently published journals, that discuss semiotics. Semiotics is not limited to poetry, but also includes song lyrics, poetry, and local wisdom. The structure is clear and logical, with causal connections between statements. The results indicate that semiotics is closely linked to tragedy and must consider various aspects such as anatomy, anthology, coherence, logic, plausibility, reductionism, amazement, connotation, expression of desolation, natural and constructed hypotheticals, opposition, silence, solitude, mimesis and comprehensiveness.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to re-examine Norman Fairclough's concepts of discourse, critical discourse on media, language, technology, and management. Despite capitalism historically bringing ideals in the name of economic improvement after the Second World War, in practice, the commodification of language and economy became inevitable. Therefore, it is crucial to incorporate Norman Fairclough's notion of critical awareness of political agendas within the language spectrum in the analysis. The language used is clear, concise, and objective, with a logical flow of information and causal connections between statements. This text presents a qualitative research method that involves collecting data from primary and secondary sources. The results demonstrate that Norman Fairclough's concept of language in the context of management, discourse, technology, music, and policy serves as a platform for discourse development and as a tool to resist the commodification of meaning and ideology in a multifaceted landscape. Furthermore, Fairclough's ideas have contributed to the critical development of discourse analysis, which not only applies to specific disciplines but also to conversations in the humanities.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate the extent to which Charles Sanders Peirce's ideas are based on prior research. Peirce's experiences are analysed as signifiers and signs in his text analysis. This research is a literature review that incorporates data from books and journals published within the last decade. This literature review analyses previous studies that use the lens of Charles Sanders Peirce's thoughts. The review shows that many of the instruments that Peirce put forward had not been accommodated in previous studies. Many authors who discuss Peirce focus on the theory as a means of self-reflection and personal growth. However, Peirce's philosophy advocates for inclusive analyses that take into account the subject's point of view. Additionally, the results indicate that the signifier's impact extends beyond the physical form of signs to include their interpretation. This includes the quality, accompanying objects, and relationships between subjects or subject-objects, as well as historical events, characters, relevant and balanced laws, and contextual habits.

Abstract

This research explores the subject-verb agreement system of Pashto and English, focusing on their syntactic and morphological properties. Pashto belongs to the group of Indo-Iranian languages, characterized by a sophisticated agreement system with verbs inflected for number, person, and gender, particularly in past and future tenses. In contrast to Pashto, the English language has a simpler agreement system with minimal inflection. This study explores various approaches to grammatical agreement and their implications for language learning and theoretical linguistics by comparing the subject-verb agreement of both languages. A comparative linguistic approach was employed, utilizing a qualitative method. Data were collected from written and spoken sources in both languages, followed by systematic syntactic analysis. The findings of this study show apparent discrepancies in the agreement system of Pashto and English Languages.  Pashto has a complex agreement system involving a rich inflection for number, person, and gender, showing a loaded morphological structure. This inflectional richness of Pashto provides multifaceted information that supports accurate and clear communication. In contrast, English has a more streamlined agreement system with simpler inflection.  Moreover, the findings contribute to the knowledge of cross-linguistics variations and offer information for language education in multilingual contexts.

Abstract

This study investigated the politeness strategies used by Park Jin Young when commenting on the American contestants’ performance in the A2K show and its factors. The aim was to find what types of politeness strategies Park Jin Young used and the factors that influenced him to choose those in the A2K show. The method used is a qualitative method using Scollon et al.'s (2012) politeness theory. The result showed that Park Jin Young used more involvement than an independence strategy. The factors influencing it are the power and distance factors, revealing his implementation of a hierarchical politeness structure. In addition, the weight of imposition factor reveals that even though Park Jin Young tries to adapt to American politeness when commenting on American contestants' performances, he still maintains his identity as a Korean by using independent strategies
