Abstract

Liong sling batik cloth has decreased interest because it is considered ancient and cause aches or pain in the shoulder when used. Today's parents prefer to use a modern baby carrier like Mei Tai whose use rests on two shoulders to minimize aches or pain in the shoulder, but in Indonesia, the current mei tai baby carrier products still use general motifs such as cartoons or geometric fields and do not contain cultural elements. The research method used in this study is a qualitative research method that conducts in-depth analysis and quantitative methods that aim to coordinate data such as literature studies, observations, interviews with Certified Babywearing Consultants, and conduct research by developing motifs on Liong sling batik fabric. The final result of this research is the visualization of product merchandise which contains a little information about the structure and the meaning of the Liong sling batik motif so that it can be known by the public. Then there are processed motifs inspired by Liong sling batik fabric with more modern compositions and shapes, and the creation of Mei Tai's baby carrier products, which adopted designs for developing motifs inspired by more modern Liong batik.

Abstract

Spanning eight ethnic cultures with different histories, the Province of North Sumatra keeps an abundance of historical stories, so it is significant to be able to build the narrative of ethnicity in the museum. The existence of the exhibition space that is still in the concept of a traditional museum makes the narrative in the cultural exhibition space in the museum has not yet developed. Narratives can build communication in creating understanding between humans and collections with story ideas conveyed. So that the narrative spatial approach is considered ideal to build a story. The purpose of this research is to be able to apply the interior of the narrative space through the context, content, scenarios, messages, and experiences of visitors. The method used in this study is a qualitative method summarized by the Design Thinking approach. The research data were obtained from literature studies, interviews, and direct observation of the exhibition room of the State Museum of North Sumatra. The result of this research is to create a maximum narrative in the exhibition space that will not be separated from the determination of Plot and Pace, arranged of Dramatic Arc, and the application of its presentation. The composition of the ethnic plot is divided into several life-to-death phases. Then determine the storyline includes a beginning, a muddle, and an end. And the last is the application of narrative elements, both the concept of content presentation to the setting of narrative media. So, by applying the narrative space approach in the North Sumatra State Museum, the presentation of ethnic narratives is more optimal and creates a different experience by playing with the emotions of visitors in each exhibition scenario.

Abstract

Indonesia is a country with high potential against the threat of natural disasters. Badan Nasional Penanggulangan Bencana (BNPB) noted that the number of natural disasters occurring during 2018-2019 has increased. Many lost their homes, property, and public facilities. It has a direct impact on the psychological condition of the victim, therefore temporary shelters are urgently needed by the victims after the disaster. Shelter has an important role to play in reducing the risk of death and vulnerability and strengthening community resilience. Temporary shelter is intended as one of the recovery efforts that bridges the transition period between the emergency response phase and the reconstruction period completed. The provision of temporary shelter is expected to alleviate the suffering of disaster victims and protect victims from future disasters, but the needs and rights of many victims are not fulfilled. This research aims to explain and produce findings related to the character of temporary shelters for victims of natural disasters in meeting the needs of their residents. In this research the authors used descriptive qualitative methods. Data collection is done by observation techniques, interviews and through secondary data. The process of data analysis method is done by comparing each aspect studied and looking at the pattern of relationship then linking the findings with disaster mitigation efforts. Analysis of the structure of space relationships is done by the Space Syntax analysis method. The results of this research produced a variety of temporary shelter characters, among others are aspects of type and shape, the results found that there are 2 organizations of shapes applied to temporary shelters, namely linear shapes and classified shapes, shelter sizes meet the capacity needs for one family (4-5 people), then the space programs applied are private spaces and public spaces , while in the accessibility aspect, there are 3 types of space configurations that result in that space A (public space) has easy access to, building materials used are natural materials and building materials, as well as in construction systems using earthquake-resistant building systems and knockdown systems so that they can be dismantled because of their temporary nature.

Abstract

The use of the functions of spaces in Cikondang Traditional House has changed since 1980 by the government as a cultural heritage. This place was established as a cultural heritage since indigenous peoples and traditional leaders tried to open themselves up to the outside. Cikondang Traditional House was original house for the family of the traditional leader and now become a cultural heritage to remain the legacy as a symbolic physical legacy for the existence of the traditional village. As time goes by, the activities have a change in function, such as deliberation activities for local people, the tourists and traditional rituals. All of these activities are routinely carried out in Cikondang Traditional Village. The Traditional house as a function for conducting customary deliberation, tourist visits, and ritual celebrations was carried out as a form of respect for ancestors and outsiders who always visit this place. All of the activities that take place in traditional house spaces has become a form of change in interaction between users and territories, thus this research aims to determine the shift in past and present, to determine changes in spatial territory ang the factors become territoriality. This research is a descriptive analysis using a phenomenological approach which can be seen a fact that occurs in a shift in function, a change in the territorial zone and the factors that make up the territoriality itself. This research analyzed using four steps that commonly used in phenomenology. The territory theory by Hall and Altman used in the analysis of territorial change which begins with a function shift, while the theory forward by Brower also used as a theory that strengthens territoriality in spaces. The result showed that not only the function shift, social cohesiveness, interaction between the users and defensive mechanisms that make the space territories in a traditional house change, but there are protocols or customary rules that must be obeyed as a respect sign and traditional rituals

Abstract

The increasing need for spices in the world triggers various expeditions to find sources of spices in the world. The activity of searching for the origin of these spices gave birth to international trade systems and routes. The emergence of this spice route resulted in the emergence of trading ports which became the forerunner to the emergence of new kingdoms. Jepara was one of the kingdoms that emerged because it had a port in a strategic area on the spice trade route. The hustle and bustle of trading activities in Jepara also affects the social life of the Jepara people who have long been known for their carving skills. Traders who come from various parts of the country and abroad open up opportunities for cultural mixing, which has an impact on culture, expertise, and the application of patterns in the art of Jepara wood carving. In this paper, the researcher tries to mitigate the development and influence of acculturation brought by foreign traders with a historiography method to make it easier to read the impact of the maritime spice route on the development of carving in Jepara. The results of this study shows the application of various wood carving motifs to various artifacts as a result of the influence of the mixed culture in Jepara at that time.

Abstract

The huge demand of spices triggered the Europeans to begin their voyage to South East Asia in the fifteenth century. But actually, the Chinese had known the maritime spice trading routes to South East Asia long before the European did. The focus of this research is the linkage between spice trading routes, acculturation in Java and its influence to Peranakan Chinese batik at the northern coast of Java. In this research, the study case is Oey Soe Tjoen buketan batik from Kedungwuni. Qualitative methods is used in this research, while the applied theories are acculturation theory and aesthetic morphology theory. The aesthetic morphology is utilized to identify both the characteristics similarities and differences from the first, second and third generation's Oey Soe Tjoen buketan batik. The aim of this research is to provide information about the connection between maritime spice trading routes and the evolution of textile in Indonesia. The acculturation in Java resulted in Peranakan Chinese batik, which also contributes to the development of batik cloth in Java. Moreover, this research can be a reference source for academicians, collectors and batik enthusiasts about the characteristic differences from the first, second and third generation of Oey Soe Tjoen batik. Keywords: aesthetic morphology, buketan batik, Oey Soe Tjoen
