Abstract

Coal mining in Kotabaru Regency plays a significant role in the regional economy by increasing local revenue, absorbing labor, and fostering the growth of community-supporting businesses. However, this activity also has serious environmental impacts, such as water pollution, air pollution, and the reduction of productive land. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach, utilizing literature, agency reports, and field observations. The analysis reveals an imbalance between short-term economic benefits and long-term ecological losses. Therefore, a sustainable mine management strategy is needed through reclamation, waste management, and environmental policies that actively involve the community.

Abstract

Purun is a typical wetland plant in South Kalimantan that has ecological, economic, and socio- cultural value. Traditionally, purun is used as a raw material for crafts such as mats, bags, and baskets, which not only have commercial value but also reflect local cultural identity. This study aims to analyze the potential of purun as a natural resource that supports the environmental economy through a literature review. The results show that purun plays an important role in maintaining swamp ecosystems, preventing erosion, storing carbon, and functioning as a phytoremediation agent. From an economic perspective, purun supports community-based creative industries by producing environmentally friendly crafts as an alternative to plastic products. From a socio-cultural perspective, purun contributes to the preservation of traditions, empowering women, and strengthening local identity. However, its development still faces challenges such as limited markets, minimal product innovation, and the threat of land use changes. Therefore, a sustainable economic management strategy is needed to ensure the ecological, economic, and socio-cultural benefits of purun are maintained.

Abstract

Environmental economics is a branch of science that seeks to bridge the conflict of interest between economic growth and environmental sustainability. In the context of Indonesia, issues of deforestation, land degradation, pollution, and exploitation of natural resources show that development is often carried out without considering ecological costs. This study aims to examine the role of environmental economics in promoting sustainable development, while also exploring the challenges and opportunities faced by Indonesia. The method used is a literature study, reviewing more than ten relevant journals and books related to the concepts of environmental economics, sustainable development, and their application in national policy. The results of the study show that although environmental economic theories—such as Pigou's internalization of externalities, Costanza's valuation of ecosystem services, and Geissdoerfer's circular economy concept—provide a strong foundation for environmentally-friendly development, their implementation in Indonesia still However, there are significant opportunities through institutional strengthening, the application of green economic instruments, and the participation of the younger generation in environmentally friendly innovation. In conclusion, the environmental economy is not only relevant as an academic concept, but also an important foundation in the formulation of sustainable development policies in Indonesia. This article is expected to enrich understanding and provide practical input for various parties in achieving a balance between the economy and ecology. aces obstacles in the form of weak law enforcement, low public awareness, and overlapping regulations

Abstract

The mangrove ecosystem in Dompas Village, Bengkalis Regency, has been degraded due to anthropogenic activities and pollution from both land and sea. This study aims to analyze the condition of the mangrove ecosystem and the urgency of conservation in the coastal area of Dompas Village. The methods used were field surveys, observation of the mangrove ecosystem, measurement of physical and chemical parameters of the water, and interviews with the local community. The results of the study show that the mangrove ecosystem in Dompas Village has experienced a decline in quality due to uncontrolled logging, pollution from the Pertamina Sungai Pakning oil refinery, and shipping activities. Mangrove degradation has caused coastal abrasion, a decline in biodiversity, and a reduction in fishery resources. Conservation of the mangrove ecosystem is crucial to maintain ecological functions, protect the coastline, preserve biodiversity, and support the livelihoods of coastal communities. Rehabilitation efforts, community education, enforcement of regulations, and integrated coastal zone management are needed to ensure the sustainability of the mangrove ecosystem in Dompas Village.

Abstract

Rapid urbanization in Semarang City, Central Java, has increased solid waste generation and created challenges in sustainable waste management. This study aims to analyze urban waste management using the environmental economics perspective, emphasizing cost-benefit approaches, externalities, and community participation. The research method applies a qualitative-descriptive approach with literature review and secondary data analysis from government reports and academic journals. Results indicate that waste in Semarang reaches more than 1,200 tons per day, with only 70% transported to the Jatibarang landfill. Economic losses arise from unmanaged waste, including public health impacts, environmental degradation, and increased government expenditures. Applying environmental economics, such as the polluter pays principle, economic instruments for waste reduction, and community-based waste banks, can provide solutions. The findings highlight that strengthening policy integration, enhancing public participation, and adopting circular Ekonomi models are crucial for achieving sustainable development. This study contributes to the discourse on environmental policy and supports the design of local government strategies.
