Abstract

The improvement of feed quality through fermentation technology has been widely applied in ruminant production systems to enhance nutrient digestibility and feed efficiency. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of fermented feed on growth performance and feed efficiency in beef cattle. A total of 20 male Bali cattle with an average initial weight of 200 ± 15 kg were used in this experiment, divided into two treatment groups: control (conventional feed) and treatment (fermented feed with local microbes). The research was conducted for 90 days using a randomized complete design. Data collected included daily weight gain, feed intake, and feed conversion ratio (FCR). Results showed that cattle receiving fermented feed exhibited significantly higher average daily gain (0.85 kg/day) compared to the control group (0.65 kg/day) (p < 0.05). Furthermore, the FCR of the treatment group was lower (7.2) compared to the control group (9.1), indicating better feed efficiency. In conclusion, fermented feed can significantly improve growth performance and feed utilization efficiency in beef cattle, providing a practical strategy to optimize productivity in tropical livestock systems.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the quality of dairy cow milk under different rearing systems in tropical regions. The research background is based on the fact that tropical climates create unique challenges in dairy farming, such as heat stress, feed availability, and disease prevalence, which directly affect milk production and quality. The study was conducted using a comparative observational method on three rearing systems: intensive, semi-intensive, and extensive. Data were collected from 90 dairy cows divided evenly across the systems, and milk samples were analyzed for fat content, protein, lactose, total solids, and microbial counts. The results showed that milk from intensive systems had significantly higher protein and fat content, while semi-intensive systems produced milk with a more balanced nutrient profile. Extensive systems showed lower milk quality, particularly in terms of microbial contamination. The findings highlight that the choice of rearing system significantly influences milk quality in tropical conditions. The study suggests that semi-intensive systems may provide the best balance between productivity and sustainability. These results can be used as a reference for developing dairy farming strategies in tropical regions to ensure milk quality and safety.

Abstract

Agricultural by-products are increasingly considered as sustainable feed alternatives for ruminants, especially in regions with limited access to commercial feed. This study evaluates the utilization of various agricultural wastes such as rice straw, corn stover, and peanut haulms as alternative feed resources for Peranakan Etawa (PE) goats. The objective was to assess the nutritional potential, palatability, and impact on goat growth performance. A descriptive qualitative approach was combined with field observations and laboratory proximate analysis. Data were analyzed to compare nutrient contents with conventional feed standards. Results showed that rice straw has high fiber content but low protein (3–4%), while corn stover and peanut haulms offer moderate protein values (6–10%) with acceptable palatability. The integration of these by-products into goat diets demonstrated potential to reduce feed costs by up to 30% without significantly affecting weight gain when properly supplemented. It can be concluded that agricultural by-products are viable feed alternatives for PE goats, particularly in rural areas, though supplementation with protein-rich sources remains essential. This study highlights the economic and environmental benefits of optimizing local agricultural residues as livestock feed.

Abstract

The reproductive performance of Bali cattle plays a crucial role in supporting livestock productivity and the sustainability of local cattle breeding programs. Reproductive management, including estrus detection, artificial insemination (AI), and nutritional support, significantly influences pregnancy success rates. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of reproductive management practices on pregnancy success in Bali cattle. A field survey and direct observation were conducted on 120 Bali cows in Central Lombok, Indonesia, from March to August 2024. Data collection included reproductive records, AI service efficiency, body condition score (BCS), and farmer management practices. Statistical analysis was performed using logistic regression to identify factors affecting pregnancy success. The results showed that timely estrus detection, AI accuracy, and adequate nutrition were the most significant determinants of conception rate (p < 0.05). Bali cattle with good BCS (≥3.0) and proper estrus detection had a higher pregnancy success rate (78%) compared to those with poor management (42%). The study concludes that improving reproductive management, particularly in estrus detection training for farmers and nutritional supplementation, enhances the reproductive efficiency of Bali cattle. These findings provide valuable insights for policymakers, livestock extension workers, and farmers in optimizing reproductive strategies for sustainable cattle production in tropical environments.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the reproductive performance of female Bali cattle based on age and body condition score (BCS). The research was conducted at a community-based cattle breeding center in Bali Province from January to June 2025. Data were collected through direct observation and interviews with breeders, focusing on parameters such as age at first mating, calving interval, conception rate, and postpartum estrus. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and correlation analysis to determine the relationship between body condition and reproductive efficiency. The results showed that cows with an optimal BCS (score 3–3.5) had better reproductive performance, shorter calving intervals, and higher conception rates compared to those with low (<2.5) or excessive (>4) body condition. Age also significantly affected reproductive traits, where cows aged 4–7 years exhibited the best reproductive performance. It can be concluded that maintaining an optimal body condition and appropriate age management plays a crucial role in improving the reproductive efficiency of Bali cattle.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of fermented feed on the growth performance of beef cattle. Fermented feed is known to improve nutrient digestibility and enhance rumen microbial activity, which can support better weight gain and feed efficiency. The research was conducted at a local cattle breeding farm in West Sumatra using a randomized block design with three treatment groups: conventional feed, partially fermented feed, and fully fermented feed. Each group consisted of 10 beef cattle aged 12–18 months. Data on average daily gain (ADG), feed conversion ratio (FCR), and body condition score (BCS) were collected over 90 days. Results showed that cattle receiving fully fermented feed had a significantly higher ADG (0.89 kg/day) compared to conventional feed (0.65 kg/day). Moreover, FCR improved by 18% in the fully fermented group. These findings suggest that fermented feed positively influences growth performance, enhances feed efficiency, and provides potential economic benefits for beef cattle farmers. The study concludes that fermented feed can be applied as an alternative feeding strategy to optimize beef cattle production in smallholder farming systems.

Abstract

Indonesia is home to diverse local livestock populations that possess unique genetic characteristics and strong adaptation to tropical environments. However, increasing industrialization, uncontrolled crossbreeding, declining effective population size, and the absence of a comprehensive national genomic database threaten their sustainability. This study aims to examine genetic diversity, population structure, and conservation priorities of Indonesian local livestock using molecular markers including microsatellites, mtDNA, SNPs, and whole-genome sequencing. A literature-based analytical approach was used to synthesize findings from recent genetic studies on cattle, buffalo, goats, sheep, and poultry. Results indicate that local breeds such as Bali cattle, Madura cattle, Kacang goats, and Pelung chickens retain high within-population genetic diversity and signatures of selection linked to heat tolerance, parasite resistance, and efficient metabolism. However, introgression from imported breeds has reduced genetic purity in several populations. The findings highlight the urgent need for integrated conservation strategies, including genomic-assisted breeding, establishment of a national genetic repository, and community-based in situ protection. Overall, this study underscores the strategic role of genetic research in preserving Indonesia’s livestock biodiversity and strengthening sustainable breeding programs.
