Abstract

This paper discusses the theoretical understanding of tone in literary works, with a particular focus on Herman Melville’s novel Moby Dick. Drawing on E.M. Forster’s framework, especially the concept of prophetic song, the author highlights how tone in literature can reflect the moral condition of humanity and its struggle with nature. Tone is understood not merely as a form of entertainment but as a means of expressing profound universal values. By comparing Forster’s ideas with other literary works, this paper emphasizes the importance of literary appreciation through the recognition and understanding of tone.

Abstract

This article explores the use of language laboratories as an educational technology tool that plays a crucial role in language teaching. Although language laboratories are often regarded as valuable facilities, in practice their pedagogical and technical implications are frequently overlooked after installation. Common issues include a lack of trained technicians, poor equipment maintenance, and the mismatch between laboratory usage and the actual goals of language learning. As a result, many laboratories fail to function optimally and eventually fall into disuse. This paper aims to outline the background, development, and future prospects of language laboratory utilization. It also emphasizes the importance of a comprehensive understanding of the laboratory’s function in order to maximize its effectiveness in supporting language education.

Abstract

This article examines the various types of doctoral education across different countries and the diverse meanings attached to the doctoral degree. Like other academic titles, the doctoral degree has evolved throughout the 20th century and is not confined to medicine, but also extends to other fields, including languages. The paper highlights the distinctions between professional and non-professional doctorates, as well as the differences in doctoral education systems internationally, with particular emphasis on the United States and Europe. In the U.S., doctoral research tends to be more structured, while in other countries, such as Denmark, the systems vary significantly. These differences shape how doctoral degrees are understood, recognized, and valued. The article aims to provide an overview of the variations in doctoral education worldwide and underscores the flexibility of doctoral programs.

Abstract

This article discusses the communicative aspects of foreign language teaching, particularly English, by tracing the development of teaching methods and theories alongside advances in linguistics. The early stage was characterized by the traditional grammar-translation approach, later shifting to structural methods such as the audio-lingual approach, and eventually transforming into generative and cognitive perspectives. The article also highlights teaching practices around the 1960s, which emphasized pattern practice to master grammatical structures through repetition and error correction. These paradigm shifts illustrate the transition from passive learning to viewing language as a tool for active communication. Thus, the article underscores that language teaching should not be confined to grammar instruction but should also focus on developing broader communicative competence.
