Abstract

The omnipresent nature of social media in university students' daily experiences has generated unprecedented challenges for mental health professionals in higher education environments. This research examines how counselors modify their methodologies to respond to social media's evolving influence on student psychological wellbeing and identity development. Utilizing semi-structured interviews with 42 university counselors throughout Southeast Asia alongside quantitative data from 215 student surveys, this study identifies critical adaptation techniques that strengthen counseling effectiveness in contemporary digital contexts. Results indicate that effective counselors implement comprehensive strategies including: enhancing technological competency, incorporating specialized social media evaluation instruments, developing targeted intervention frameworks, and advocating digital health practices. The data demonstrates that counselors who successfully adapt their approaches achieve higher student participation rates and superior outcomes when addressing social media-related psychological distress. This research expands the emerging knowledge base regarding technology-informed therapeutic practices and establishes an adaptation framework for counselors that integrates conventional counseling methodologies with essential digital-era skills

Abstract

Spiritual well-being is an essential dimension of human life that reflects the harmony of one's relationship with the self, others, the environment, and God. John W. Fisher developed a model of spiritual well-being comprising four relational domains, which has been widely applied in contemporary psychology and education. On the other hand, Imam al-Ghazali, through his classical work Kimiya as-Sa’adah (The Alchemy of Happiness), emphasized that spiritual well-being can only be achieved through the purification of the soul (tazkiyatun nafs) and drawing closer to Allah as the ultimate purpose of life. This study aims to analyze and compare Fisher’s theory of spiritual well-being from al-Ghazali’s perspective, in order to gain a deeper and more transformative understanding of human spirituality. Using a qualitative approach through library research, the study finds that although the two figures originate from different traditions and paradigms, both place the transcendent relationship at the core of spiritual happiness. Integrating these two approaches can enrich the development of spiritual well-being that is not only rational and measurable but also infused with spiritual values, making it highly relevant for education, counseling, and spiritual life in the modern.

Abstract

In the digital age, adolescent are increasingly vulnerable to the phenomenon of oversharing - the tendency to over-share personal information via social media. This practice, while often motivated by the need for social connection and validation, has been shown to negatively impact students' mental health. This article aims to comprehensively explore the role of counselors in mitigating the negative impact of social media oversharing on adolescent. The research was conducted through a literature review and analysis of current literature on the relationship between oversharing, mental health, and the interventions that counselors can provide. The results of the analysis show that oversharing can trigger anxiety, sleep disorders, decreased self-esteem, and increase the risk of cyberbullying. Counselors have a strategic role in providing digital literacy education, cognitive-behavioral therapy, emotion regulation training, and continued psychological support. With the right strategy, counselors can become agents of change in creating a culture of healthy and ethical information sharing among students. This study concludes that counsellors need to have adequated knowledge and skills to address the issue of social media oversharing and its impact on adolescent mental health.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the role of TikTok social media on the social interactions and ethics of Generation Z, a generation born between 1997 and 2012 and very familiar with digital technology. The study used a qualitative approach with data collection techniques in the form of interviews, observations, and documentation. The results of the study show that TikTok is not only used as a medium for entertainment, but also an important space in building social identity, expressing oneself, and expanding social networks for Generation Z. This platform facilitates faster and more visual communication and encourages the formation of interest-based communities that strengthen digital interactions. However, the use of TikTok also brings ethical challenges, such as the spread of inappropriate content, pressure to follow viral trends, and the potential for blurring local cultural values. Some respondents showed ethical awareness in filtering content and maintaining personal values, but uneven digital literacy can be an obstacle. TikTok plays a role as a means of social and cultural transformation for Generation Z, but its use needs to be directed so as not to damage the existing social order and ethical values. This study emphasizes the importance of collaboration between users, educators, and platform providers to create a healthy and responsible digital ecosystem.

Abstract

This study examines the adaptation of counseling services in response to the psychological challenges adolescents face in increasingly digital social environments. Through a qualitative descriptive literature review, the research analyzes emerging counseling approaches specifically designed to address social media-related issues among adolescents aged 12-19 years. The methodology involved systematic analysis of 43 selected publications from 2015-2024, incorporating both Indonesian and international perspectives to ensure cultural relevance. Results identify several significant adaptations in counseling practices, including: (1) specialized therapeutic frameworks such as Digital-enhanced Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Mindfulness-based Digital Awareness Therapy that directly address digital-specific psychological mechanisms; (2) technological transformations in counseling delivery through online platforms and chat-based interventions that increase accessibility and engagement; (3) integration of digital literacy components within counseling interventions to enhance adolescents' critical understanding of platform mechanics and media influences; (4) culturally responsive adaptations that align interventions with local values while addressing universal psychological impacts; (5) preventive approaches implemented in school and community settings before psychological distress manifests; and (6) family-based interventions that improve parental understanding of adolescent digital experiences. The findings demonstrate that effective counseling adaptations extend beyond superficial adjustments to fundamental reconsiderations of counseling theories, techniques, delivery methods, and ecological approaches. This research contributes to the development of more responsive counseling interventions for digitally connected adolescents and highlights the importance of continuous adaptation as digital technologies evolve.
