Abstract

Literature plays a crucial role in reflecting social life and history, as it records and depicts various aspects of human life, including values, traditions, norms, experiences, and social conflicts within a society. This study aims to understand the interaction between socio-political dynamics and contemporary literary expression. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach with content analysis methods to examine the content, themes, and socio-cultural context of literary works produced during the Reformation era in Indonesia. The Reformation era in Indonesia since 1998 has had a significant impact on various aspects of life, including literature and social history. Abstract

The relationship between history and literature in Indonesia is strong and complementary, with history serving as a crucial source of inspiration for literary works. Indonesian historians and writers have demonstrated the close relationship between history and literature in Indonesian culture, where literary works often take the form of "stories" that can contain both verbal and fictional elements that lend deeper meaning to historical events. This study aims to examine how history is transformed in contemporary Indonesian literature and the aesthetic, political, and cultural purposes of these historical representations. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach, utilizing the theory of New Historicism, to examine the relationship between literary texts and their historical contexts. Indonesian literature has a rich history, spanning from the Balai Pustaka era to the New Order and Reformation eras. Initially, literature was influenced by the socio-political context and presented normatively to support official narratives. However, during the Reformation and contemporary eras, history has been treated more critically and is open to various interpretations.

Abstract

During the colonial period, Indonesian society was divided into rigid social classes: aristocrats, priyayi, and commoners. The aristocrats and priyayi often collaborated with the colonial government, while the commoners, particularly farmers and laborers, lived in poverty due to exploitative policies such as the forced cultivation system. This study explores the role of literature in preserving and revitalizing a nation's cultural identity amidst colonial hegemony, aiming to illustrate its contribution as a medium for preserving values and traditions. This study uses a qualitative approach with literary text analysis as its primary method, focusing on the meaning and structure of literary works from the Dutch colonial period. Data collection was conducted using library research techniques and secondary sources such as books, scientific articles, and related documents. The study concludes that literature during the colonial period functioned as a tool of resistance and social criticism, recording the nation's history of suffering and struggle, while simultaneously building national identity and awareness. Literature created narratives that provided moral strength to the people in the face of colonial oppression and helped maintain local culture and values as the foundation of the nation.

Abstract

Historical literacy is crucial for building national identity and character from an early age. Historical literacy helps individuals recognize the cultural roots, values, and struggles of previous generations, thereby fostering a sense of belonging and pride in the nation's heritage. This study explores the role of historical literacy in children's literature and its relevance to character education, nationalism, and historical knowledge. It aims to enrich the study of children's literature and history education, as well as provide guidance for teachers, parents, and children's literature writers. This study uses a qualitative approach with library research to explore historical literacy and the role of children's literature in history learning. The study found that children exposed to historical stories from an early age demonstrate a sense of belonging to their cultural heritage and pride in national heroes and important events. Historical literacy in children's literature is crucial for shaping identity, nationalism, morality, and critical thinking from an early age. Historical literacy not only conveys knowledge about past events but also explores their meaning, relevance, and values, thereby fostering strong character and national awareness.

Abstract

Literature is a multifaceted and multidimensional concept in Indonesian society. Literature is not merely an aesthetic work but also a social and political document that records the life of society during a particular period or era. This study explores the role of literature in Indonesian socio-political documentation, highlighting its significance as a cultural archive for understanding the nation's historical journey and its role in recording socio-political dynamics. This study uses qualitative research methods with a descriptive, analytical, and objective sociology of literature approach to analyze literary works as socio-political documentation. This research focuses on the structure of literary works, such as plot, characters, and setting, as representations of society's social and political realities. The results show that literature in Indonesia functions dually as both an aesthetic work and an important socio-political document. Literature records social realities such as poverty, injustice, class inequality, and social conflict, and reflects cultural changes and political dynamics from the colonial period to the contemporary era. Literary works serve as alternative accounts that give voice to marginalized groups, critical tools that raise collective consciousness, and rich sources of cultural history.

Abstract

This research examines the transformation of cultural values from Indonesian historical sources to contemporary literature, where history and literature form a dialectic of national identity inheritance amidst post-Reformasi socio-political changes. The background of the problem includes an interdisciplinary gap in the digital reinterpretation of values such as heroism, religiosity, social hierarchy, patriarchy, loyalty, and custom, which have evolved from feudal legitimacy to contemporary critique, as seen in the works of Eka Kurniawan and Ayu Utami. The research aims to identify dominant values, forms of transformation (preservation, modification, deconstruction), authorial strategies, influencing factors, and mapping evolutionary patterns for a literary-historical study framework. The descriptive qualitative method uses thematic content analysis of 20 primary historical sources (the Kedukan Bukit inscription, the Javanese chronicle) and 15 contemporary novels (Lelaki Harimau, Saman), triangulated with interviews with 10 experts, NVivo codification, and pattern matching of KristevaDerrida theory based on Miles-Huberman (2014). The results show a dominant transformation of modification (45%) and deconstruction (25%), with the main factors being globalization (40%), author ideology (30%), and the demands of Gen Z readers (30%), changing the function of values from sacredlegitimacy to profane-social criticism, enriching literature as a bridge of hybrid identity in the digital era.

Abstract

Indonesia's struggle for independence has become the foundation of a national identity unified through oral literature as a medium for transmitting non-written collective memory, facing the threat of extinction in the era of globalization. This study aims to analyze representations of the independence struggle in oral literature such as the Motang Rua folktale, the Diponegoro legend, the Macapat song, and the Prang Sabi tale. It also maps the values of patriotism, colonial symbols, and mechanisms for preserving memory to strengthen national identity. A qualitative interpretive method was used, incorporating literature study and structuralist-semiotic content analysis of 20 primary texts from the archives of the Language Agency and the National Agency for Research and Innovation (BRIN), complemented by triangulation of secondary data from the Imajeri journal and regional ethnography. The results show that oral literature represents resistance through patterns of courage, solidarity, and images of sacrifice that shape nationalism. Through digital revitalization and ethnopedagogy, it has successfully overcome modern challenges for sustainable preservation

Abstract

Post-revolutionary Indonesian literature (1945 and 1998) shifted from the collective heroism of the Generation of 45 to the individual inner conflict of the Generation of 66 due to the trauma of war, political disillusionment, and censorship of the New Order, as analyzed by Teeuw (1967) and Aprinus Salam (2012). This study aims to examine the form, representation, and function of psychological conflict among characters in postrevolutionary literary works to understand the reflection of historical trauma and social catharsis. A qualitative descriptive method with a literary psychology approach utilizes literature review of primary texts (Ziarah, Jalan Tak Ada Ujung, Laut Bercerita) and Lewin-Maslow's theory, similar to Frengki Umbu Gela (2017). The results show that identity, moral-ideological, emotional, and relational trauma are represented through inner monologues, fragmented plots, repressive settings, and metaphors, functioning as symbolic critique, collective healing, and humanization of characters. This research enriches literary studies with an Indonesian contextual psychoanalytic framework.

Abstract

The dynamics of change in modern Indonesian literature in line with modernization, globalization, and advances in digital technology, from the Balai Pustaka era to 2026, during which literature evolved from didactic to digitally expressive forms as a socio-political mirror. The main objective is to analyze the history of development, characteristics, external influences, and challenges and prospects to understand the transformation of themes, styles, and distribution of works. Descriptive qualitative methods through literature study, hermeneutic content analysis, and diachronic periodization utilize primary data (representative literary texts) and secondary data (2025 journals such as Putri, Nugraha, and Riri Satria). The results show a chronological evolution with layered themes (identity, feminism), a hybrid style, digital democratization via Wattpad-TikTok despite the risk of commercialization and low reading interest (0.001 books/capita), with the prospect of Gen Z regeneration through hybrid festivals and digital literacy

Abstract

Literature functions as a dynamic social document that reproduces existential experiences and societal conflicts, including structural inequality, discrimination, and collective trauma. This study aims to describe literary reflections on the realities of human life through a critique of injustice; analyze the mechanisms of empathy development through conflict and trauma; and demonstrate literature's contribution as a moral transformation that strengthens social awareness. A qualitative approach using literature review and content analysis of Swingewood and Ratna's sociology of literature was used. Primary data were from the novel Malam Seribu Jahanam (Paramaditha, 2023), the poetry of Cak Nun (2016), and Merdeka Karena Hati (Fuadi, 2019); secondary data were from the journal 2025. Descriptive-analytical analysis with triangulation focused on intrinsic elements and extrinsic functions. Literature has educational, reflective, socially critical, emancipatory, and empathetic functions to build human awareness. Representation is through characters with inner conflict (70%), themes of suffering (85%), repressive settings (60%), and emotional metaphors (90%). In a socio-educational context, literature is relevant for awareness-raising (80%) and the Independent Curriculum, integrated as character-building material.
