Abstract

Although research on family functioning has been widely documented, few studies still examine the important role of women in maintaining family functioning to get through various crises. This paper aims to analyze the efforts of Kaili women in improving family functioning in Central Sulawesi. The study utilizes exploratory case study research design and uses McMaster’s Family Assessment Device (FAD) theory as well as positive psychology analysis. The findings of this study show that the efforts of Kaili women in improving family functioning in Central Sulawesi include six aspects, those are solving problem deliberatively, building interpersonal communication, fostering positive emotions, increasing intimacy, synergizing in the role sharing, and supporting extended family. This empirical research also confirms that both the support of the extended family and the spirit of women as bulonggo (the backbone of the family/ the breadwinner) in the Kaili Tradition are supporting factors for family functioning. In addition, This finding complements McMaster’s family functioning theory, which states that the extended family plays a significant role in family functioning. The theoretical implications of this study will be discussed at the end of this study.

Abstract

This study explores the gender dynamics of Pandalungan women in East Java, who navigate the coexistence of patriarchal culture and egalitarian values. Despite living in a social order dominated by male authority, Pandalungan women show strong independence and decision-making capacity in domestic and public spheres. Their resilience reflects the egalitarian ethos of Madurese culture, where cooperation, mutual respect, and adaptability coexist with traditional hierarchies. Employing a descriptive qualitative method through interviews and literature studies, this research investigates how women position themselves, negotiate authority, and assert agency in family and community life. The findings reveal that while patriarchal norms remain influential, women actively contribute to household economies, education, and community leadership—reshaping conventional gender boundaries. Their participation illustrates that egalitarianism is not merely an imported ideal but a lived cultural practice rooted in local values. Pandalungan women thus become central figures in sustaining family welfare and promoting social balance. The study concludes that the dynamics of patriarchy and egalitarianism in Pandalungan society demonstrate a gradual transformation toward gender equality, where women’s agency evolves through negotiation, collaboration, and moral authority rather than open confrontation.

Abstract

This study critically examines the visual representation of women in the news photography of the Riau Pos during the 2019 forest fires, addressing a gap in disaster media research on gendered imagery in Indonesia. Although environmental crises have received scholarly attention, the depiction of women in regional Indonesian newspapers remains underexplored. Using a qualitative methodology that combines visual semiotic analysis and Critical Discourse Analysis, the study explores how women are portrayed across four thematic roles: responders, victims, activists, and religious participants. Our findings demonstrate that while women are increasingly visible in disaster news, their portrayal is consistently shaped by traditional gender norms. Images that suggest female agency are frequently accompanied by captions or articles that reframe this visibility within roles of caregiving, motherhood, or moral virtue. Even in politicized or public contexts, women’s participation is legitimized only when aligned with culturally sanctioned femininity. As a result, their presence is symbolically acknowledged but not discursively empowered. By situating these localized visual practices within broader frameworks of representation and gender discourse, this study advances research in disaster communication, feminist media studies, and Indonesian journalism. It underscores the importance of analyzing how visual media not only reflects, but actively constructs socio-political boundaries of gendered participation in times of crisis, with implications for more equitable disaster risk communication.

Abstract

This article aims to examine the strategic role of the Gender and Children Studies Centre (PSGA) in integrating gender perspectives within Nahdlatul Ulama Higher Education Institutions (PTNU), particularly at UNISNU Jepara, as well as efforts to prevent and address sexual violence. This research utilizes a qualitative approach with a case study at PSGA UNISNU Jepara, collecting data through observation, interviews, documentation, and surveys. Based on Judith Butler’s theory of gender performativity, the results indicate that PSGA plays a significant role in promoting gender justice on campus through policy development, advocacy for the formation of the PPKS (Prevention and Handling of Sexual Violence) task force, and the implementation of gender awareness training and assistance for victims. PSGA has become the main driving force in creating a more just and safe campus environment, especially in relation to the prevention and handling of sexual violence. However, PSGA’s involvement in policy planning and evaluation is still sporadic and disorganised. Therefore, PSGA’s institutional position in the campus decision-making structure needs to be strengthened.
