Abstract

Western imperialism in the Islamic world is a pivotal chapter in the study of Islamic Civilization History, demonstrating how the dominance of European colonial powers transformed the political, economic, social, and cultural landscape of the Islamic world. This phenomenon intensified in the 18th century, coinciding with the decline of Islamic powers such as the Ottoman Empire, Mughal Empire, and Safavid Dynasty, alongside the rising influence of European nations like Britain, France, and the Netherlands. This imperialism was not only executed through military expansion but also through economic infiltration, manipulative diplomacy, and the dissemination of modernity ideologies that often disrupted traditional Islamic order. Its impact was far-reaching, encompassing political disintegration due to colonial divisions, the exploitation of natural resources that drained the Islamic world's wealth, and the marginalization of Islamic culture and religion under the narrative of Western superiority. Colonial-introduced education systems, laws, and administration often displaced traditional Islamic values, creating identity conflicts among Muslims. However, amidst this dominance, various forms of resistance emerged, both physically through jihad and nationalist movements, and intellectually through Islamic reform spearheaded by figures such as Jamaluddin Al-Afghani, Muhammad Abduh, and Rashid Rida. This study seeks to explain how Western imperialism influenced the historical trajectory of Islamic civilization, both in colonial and post-colonial contexts. This analysis encompasses critical aspects such as colonial strategies, Islamic world responses, and long-term impacts that are still felt in the modern era. With a historical-critical approach, this abstract aims to provide a profound perspective on how Western imperialism not only posed a challenge to the Islamic world but also acted as a catalyst for the resurgence of Islamic identity and civilization amidst globalization.

Abstract

Islam in Indonesia has a unique characteristic reflected in its integration with local traditions. This relationship has been established since the early arrival of Islam in the archipelago, shaping an inclusive and distinctive Islamic identity. However, in the era of modernization and globalization, the harmony between Islam and local traditions faces significant challenges, including cultural erosion, polarization among Islamic groups, and the emergence of extreme views rejecting local traditions. This study aims to examine the dynamics of the relationship between Islam and local traditions in Indonesia, focusing on the challenges posed by modernization and the opportunities to maintain this harmony. The approach utilized includes historical and sociological analysis, with case studies of local Islamic traditions such as Maulid Nabi, tahlilan, and Grebeg Maulud. The findings reveal that local traditions not only serve as a means of cultural preservation but also as an effective medium for Islamic propagation. Nevertheless, modernization has significantly influenced younger generations, who tend to abandon local traditions. On the other hand, social media and information technology present opportunities to strengthen the harmony between Islam and local traditions when utilized wisely. This study emphasizes the importance of dialogue among Islamic groups and the preservation of local traditions as an integral part of national identity. With an inclusive approach, Islam and local traditions can continue to coexist, contributing positively to Indonesia's cultural diversity amidst global challenges.

Abstract

This research discusses the shift of local Islamic cultural values in Indonesia due to the influence of globalization and modernization. Local Islamic traditions influenced by the Wali Songo show a harmonious blend of Islamic teachings and local culture. However, globalization has caused these values to erode and affect people's religious identity. This research uses a qualitative approach with a literature analysis method. The results show that the preservation of local Islamic values requires synergy between the government, scholars, and the community.

Abstract

The struggle for Indonesian independence is closely related to the role of Muslims, both before, during, and after independence in maintaining the nation's sovereignty. This is reflected in the various efforts made by Muslims through political approaches, the formation of organizations, and acts of resistance against colonialism. The birth of these movements was influenced by various factors that developed at that time, which then gave rise to the dynamics of movements among Muslims, especially in the 20th century.
