Abstract

Formative assessments have a strategic role in providing feedback that helps improve student learning outcomes. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of the Wayground digital platform as a formative assessment medium in learning biographical texts in class X of SMA Negeri 1 Kawali. The method used is quantitative descriptive by involving students as research subjects through the presentation of multiple-choice tests on conventional media and the Wayground platform. The results of the study show that the use of Wayground can increase student engagement and strengthen the quality of feedback during the learning process. These findings affirm Wayground's pedagogical contribution as an alternative to digital assessment that supports monitoring learning outcomes more effectively and relevant to the demands of 21st-century learning.

Abstract

Communication plays an essential role in everyday social interaction, particularly in maintaining harmonious relationships and protecting individuals’ social image or “face.” One way speakers achieve this is through the use of politeness strategies, especially off-record strategies, which allow messages to be conveyed indirectly. This study examines how off-record politeness strategies are used in Disney’s animated movie Tangled through a discourse analysis approach. The analysis focuses on how characters employ indirect speech to manage relationships, reduce conflict, and influence others while preserving social harmony. Using a qualitative method, the study observes and interprets language use in its natural context, emphasizing meaning, identity, and social interaction rather than grammatical structure alone. The findings show that off-record strategies, such as hints, humor, irony, and metaphor, are frequently used by the characters to protect both the speaker’s and the listener’s face. These strategies enable the characters to achieve their communicative goals without causing confrontation. Overall, the study highlights the importance of off-record politeness strategies in fostering respectful and effective communication, not only in fictional narratives but also in real-life social interactions. Understanding these strategies can help individuals communicate more thoughtfully and maintain positive interpersonal relationships.

Abstract

This research is intended to describe and analyze the transposition technique in translating personification in Kahlil Gibran's novel The Broken Wings, and the factors that cause non-equivalence between the source language (SL) and the Indonesian translation, Sayap-Sayap Patah (TL). This research focuses on identifying grammatical transposition techniques. The researcher uses a qualitative method with content analysis. The study identified 89 examples of personification translation, indicating that transposition techniques play an essential role in achieving equivalence. Examples of this case in class shifts, such as the verb "greet" translated into Indonesian as the noun salam, as well as intersystem shifts such as "the earth" to bumi without a definiteness marker, indicate the necessary structural adaptation between English and Indonesian. These shifts reflect the structural asymmetry that affects translation, although this technique is effective in many cases, non-equivalence remains. In conclusion, this research underscores the importance of a thorough understanding of transposition techniques in literary translation and offers practical insights to help academics and translators improve translation quality.

Abstract

This article examines the existential development of Jason Dessen, the protagonist of Blake Crouch’s Dark Matter (2016), through Søren Kierkegaard’s theory of the three stages of existence: the aesthetic, the ethical, and the religious. Drawing on close textual analysis, the study demonstrates that Jason initially inhabits an aesthetic mode of existence marked by dissatisfaction, existential anxiety, and an illusory pursuit of freedom grounded in unrealized possibility. His trajectory then moves toward ethical existence, in which responsibility, commitment, and moral accountability, particularly in relation to family, become central to his sense of selfhood and meaning. Jason’s journey ultimately culminates in a form of religious existence, articulated in a contemporary, non-theistic mode, characterized by surrender, sacrifice, and a leap of faith that transcends rational calculation and ethical certainty. By mapping Jason’s inward transformation onto Kierkegaard’s existential stages, this study highlights the philosophical depth of Dark Matter and extends existing interpretations beyond scientific or rational-choice frameworks. The article concludes that Dark Matter recontextualizes Kierkegaardian existentialism within modern science fiction, demonstrating the continued relevance of existential philosophy for negotiating contemporary anxieties surrounding identity, freedom, choice, and the search for meaning under conditions of radical uncertainty.
