Abstract

Shaykh Muhammad Arsyad Al-Banjari is a religious central figure who has key roles in introducing new religious ideas in South Kalimantan. In this context, his thoughts are not only in the area of religion but also in education. There are at least four significant points of Al-Banjari’s thought on education. First, the educational paradigm was under the umbrella of neo-Sufism which emphasized on bayani, ‘irfani and burhani. Second, the institutional education introduced is a semi-formal education in which the study was concentrated in one place. Third, the teaching methods used are macro and micro. Macro method includes contextualization, centralization and integralization. Micro method covers uswah hasanah, halaqah, lecturing, and question and answer. Above all, the material for religius study in Al-Banjari’s period was deeper and wider compared to the era before Shakh  his arrival. The use of various books for studying was so illustrative

Abstract

Established on 31 January 1926 in Surabaya, East Java, by some prominent kyais like K.H. Abdul Wahab Hasbullah and K.H. Hasyim Asy’ari, the Nahdlatul Ulama was born in the culture of pesantren where ‘traditional Islam’ has been rooted and preserved. In this context, the Nahdlatul Ulama declared its religious ideology as ‘ahl al-sunnah wa al-jama’ah.’ This religious ideology has become important characteristics of the Nahdlatul Ulama that differentiate itself from Muslim ‘modernist’ organizations. In its early movements, the Nahdlatul Ulama plyed a pivotal role by, for example, banning the Muslim youths from entering the Dutch military service, prohibiting the Muslims from supporting the Dutch army, and rejecting the Dutch aid which was offered to the Nahdlatul Ulama’s madrasas. Furthermore, together with other nationalist movements, the Nahdlatul Ulama actively took part in the process of establishing the Indonesian State and in the war to defend the Indonesian independence against the Dutch who tried to re-establish their colonial rule in Indonesia. These facts, undoubtedly, proved that the Nahdlatul Ulama made a great contribution to the nation and state of Indonesia.

Abstract

This article deals with Metode Terjemah Gandul (MTG, literally “hanging translation method”) or popularly known as utawi iki iku translation method. It presents two points about the method that has been widely used for translating Arabic-Islamic books to local languages in Indonesian pesantrens. First, it denies the prevailing opinion that MTG is unique only to Javanese pesantrens. The paper shows some similar translation methods in other local languages such as Sundanese, Maduranese, and Malay. Second, the researcher promotes three main agendas concerning the MTG history. Although the method is widely used in Indonesia pesantrens and is regarded one of the most valuable pesantrens intellectual properties, its history has not clearly uncovered yet. The three research agendas include: (1) who was the creator of the MTG; (2) what language was initially used; and (3) when was the MTG created. The research gives the limited answer for each question which could lead to further and deeper researches and studies.

Abstract

This paper is concerned with exploring the dissemination and politization of radical Islamic ideology in Makassar. Little has been done to study this important issue. How did radical ideology develop from time to time in Makassar and how has it evolved to become the political power in the region have gone unnoticed. This paper tries to fill this gap. It assumes that radical ideology is a form of discourse, going through a paradigmatic test in which it was criticized, deconstructed, constructed and reconstructed. The paper is part of the attempts to deconstruct radical ideology by means of dismantling two main factors that have caused it to flourish, the actors and organizations of the ideology. A particular attention is give to the following two issues, in what way the ideology may be regarded as a discourse, and how this discourse is being translated into an ideology. These two specific problems becomes the centre of the analysis together with the process in which they intermingle.

Abstract

Research on the history of Islam and its dissemination on the island of Maluku have hitherto been lacking analytical depth. This paper tries to fill that gap by analysisng four stages in the development of Islam on the Island, referring to approaches to study Islam and Muslims. First, the stage of integration in which Islam tried to incorporate local values and their ramifications. Second, the stage of war and resistance in which the attempts of Islam to become the dominant power on the region face a strong confrontation from the existing power. Third, the stage of reformation and renewal in which Islam interrogates and evaluates itself so as to present itself within the context of Maluku. Fourth, the stage of modern era in which Islam faces challenges not only from other religions mainly Christianity which is equally strong on the island, but also from modernity and its narratives.
