Journal of Indonesian Islam (JIIS) publishes articles on Indonesian Islam from various perspectives, covering both literary and fieldwork studies. The journal puts emphasis on aspects related to Islamic studies in an Indonesian context, with special reference to culture, politics, law, society, eco­no­mics, history, and doctrines. Journal of Indonesian Islam always places Indonesian Islam in the central focus of academic inquiry, and invites any comprehensive observation of Islamic expressions with various dimensions in the country. The journal, serving as a forum for the study of Indonesian Islam, supports focused studies of particular themes and interdisciplinary studies in relation to the subject. It has become a medium of exchange of ideas and research findings from various traditions of learning that have interacted in the scholarly manner.

Abstract

The involvement of the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS, Partai Keadilan Sejahtera) in the electoral democratic system in Indonesia raises a question whether it is possible for a political party with a deeply religious ideology to liberalize and entertain democracy. The decision to enter politics does not infrequently entail an abandonment of ideological purity. It represents an acceptance of the political order and power sharing-based politics. While identity and ideology are instrumental in political mobilization for PKS, it has no choice but to negotiate and interact with other political actors through coalitions and parliamentary politics. A modern party involved in a competitive and rule-based system, it is also required to broaden its electorate and reach out to non-Islamist voters. It is intriguing in this context to explore the party’s strategy to maintain its Islamist platforms and the base of support while allying itself with distinctly non-Islamist ruling elites, and engage in the pragmatic ruling coalition. Understanding the paradoxical roles of an Islamist party when involved in the on-going electoral democratic process, this paper also looks at the future of political Islam in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study tries to discuss the central issue of the instilling plural values to learners of each level of Islamic schools in Makassar. This study focuses on Islamic schools, since the teaching of religious subjects were also offered at public schools. In order to limiting the scope of the research, this study highlights on the extent of religious teaching and how the teaching are synchronized with of the plurality values  in schools that consists of diverse ethnicity and culture in one hand, and diverse religious beliefs outside the schools, in another hand. The main problem statement is how the plurality values are instilled at Islamic schools in Makassar. The instilling process of plural values is tilled at Islamic schools in Makassar. The instilling process of plural values and culture is qualitative with socio-cultural pedagogical approach. The finding is that the instilling of the plurality values had been implemented but is not yet an adequate process, because it is still sporadic. Also, it is not yet concretely reflected in the curriculum.

Abstract

The Majelis Ulama Indonesia (MUI) has played an important role in guarding the Sunni orthodoxy in contemporary Indonesia. As it has chapters in almost parts of Indonesia in the provincial, district and municipality level, this role has been also translated into the local context. The strength of the MUI stems from “semi-officiality” and “semi-representative” nature of the organisation. This article is aimed to analyse this role in the post-New Order period, after the establishment of the Majelis Ulama Indonesia (MUI) of Banten province in 2001, especially in dealing with deviant beliefs or sects and shirk (polytheist) and bid‘ah (religious innovation) practices. It is to show that orthodoxy and heterodoxy is not purely religious, but also political, as this is related to the problem of authority and power.

Abstract

The debate surrounding theocracy and secularism among Indonesian Muslims has been recorded since pre-independence period in early part of the 20th Century until now. This article is an effort to examine the compatibility of Islam with the idea of democracy and the inclusion of shari’ah in it. The focus is on government administration and law. Using the approach of Islamic law perspective, the writer argues that the dichotomy between theocracy and secularism does not apply to Indonesia because he treats shari’ah as merely a philosophical reference. Shari’ah evolves as a living organism that transcends any debatable issues for benefit of ummah. In contemporary Indonesian political context, the substance of shari’ah had been manifested by implementing a democratic system based on a legal foundation for the benefit and welfare of ummah. Therefore, some political-legal institutions like Constitutional Court and Anti-Corruption Commission are considered as part of shari’ah implementation although they are not textually sanctioned by shari’ah.

Abstract

The debate on the notion of identity of the traditional Islam in the Javanese society is often related to pesantren and kyai. These are the sub-cultural entities that have contributed to the shaping and building the identity of the Javanese Muslims. This paper explores the following key issues: (1) In what ways the collective identity of the Javanese Muslims is constructed in such a multicultural society? (2) What are the roles of the pesantren and kyais in such a process. The paper argues that the pesantren communities perceive themselves as the defending power of traditional Islam, the fact that would imply logically that there is a sort of cultural confrontation between the traditionalists and the modernists. The paper will delve into this polarity in the context of the role of pesantren and kyai and how these sub-cultural entities negotiate both with the opposing sub-culture –the modernist that is- and with modernity.
