Abstract

Background: The incidence of periodontitis is still quite high in Indonesia. One of the bacteria that cause periodontitis is Treponema denticola. Dayak onion (Eleutherine palmifolia (L.) Merr) is often used as herbal medicine because it contains secondary metabolites. Objectives: This study aims to determine the antibacterial activity of dayak onion leaf and bulb extracts against the growth of Treponema denticola. Research Metodes: The dilution method was used to determine the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Kill Concentration (MBC) of 96% ethanol extract with concentrations of 80 mg/ml, 40 mg/ml, 20 mg/ml, 10 mg/ml, and 5 mg/ml. Results: The results of the study on bulb extracts showed KHM value of 20 mg/ml where there was a very significant difference in each concentration (p = 0.007) and there was no KBM value, while leaf extracts there were no KHM and KBM values at all concentrations. Conclusion: Only dayak onion bulb extract showed bacteriostatic against Treponema denticola growth.

Abstract

Background: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a global public health problem, with 10.6 million new cases and 1.3 million deaths reported in 2022 (WHO, 2023). Indonesia ranks second among countries with the highest TB burden, with an estimated 969,000 cases (Ministry of Health RI, 2022). In East Kalimantan, TB cases increased from 5,306 cases in 2021 to 11,466 cases in 2023, while in Samarinda, particularly in the Lempake Health Center area, the number of cases has remained consistently high. According to Gordon’s epidemiological triangle theory, housing environment factors (such as housing density and ventilation) and hygiene practices play an important role in the transmission of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, thus warranting investigation into their relationship with TB incidence in this area. Objectives: This study aims to analyze the association between housing density, ventilation conditions, and hygiene practices with TB incidence. Research Metodes: A cross-sectional design was applied to 50 respondents selected through total sampling. Data were collected using questionnaires and home observations, then analyzed using the Chi-square test with a significance level of 0.05. Results: Environmental housing factors and hygiene behavior significantly affect TB incidence. Preventive strategies should focus on housing improvement and hygiene promotion Conclusion: Environmental housing factors and hygiene behavior significantly affect TB incidence. Preventive strategies should focus on housing improvement and hygiene promotion.
