Abstract

Education plays a critical role in human capital development, social transformation, and sustainable national development. However, increasing criminal attacks on schools and colleges in Nigeria, particularly in Niger State, have emerged as a major threat to educational access, quality, and continuity. Recurrent incidents of school kidnappings, banditry, and violent attacks have disrupted academic activities, created fear among learners and parents, and undermined educational development in affected communities. This study examined the factors responsible for criminal attacks on schools and colleges in Niger State and analysed their implications for educational development. The study adopted a qualitative research approach based on documentary analysis. Secondary data were obtained from peer-reviewed journal articles, government publications, policy documents, reports of international organisations, security reports, and credible media sources. The data were analysed using thematic content analysis and interpreted through the lens of State Fragility Theory. The findings revealed that criminal attacks on schools are driven by socioeconomic deprivation, youth unemployment, governance and security failures, deliberate targeting by organised criminal networks, the vulnerability of rural and boarding schools, and the proliferation of small arms. The study further found that these attacks have resulted in school closures, declining enrolment, increased numbers of out-of-school children, teacher shortages, psychosocial trauma, and deterioration in educational quality. The attacks also undermine human capital development and reinforce cycles of poverty and underdevelopment. The study concludes that criminal attacks on schools constitute both a security and developmental challenge.

Abstract

Globalisation and digital media expansion have significantly transformed advertising practices across contemporary societies, increasing the circulation of transnational advertising messages and their influence on local cultural systems. This development has generated scholarly concern regarding the implications of global advertising for indigenous cultural values, identity formation, and cultural sustainability within Nigeria’s culturally diverse environment. This study examined the trends of global advertising and their influence on local cultures in Nigeria. Specifically, the study explored the nature of global advertising practices, the role of glocalisation and cultural adaptation, audience negotiation and resistance, regulatory interventions, and the implications of global advertising for cultural preservation in Nigeria. The study adopted a qualitative desk research design using a systematic literature review approach. Data were obtained from secondary sources, including peer-reviewed journal articles, books, policy documents, and credible academic publications related to advertising, globalisation, media culture and Nigerian communication practices. The collected data were analysed using thematic content analysis. The findings revealed that global advertising in Nigeria operates through a hybrid interaction between global standardisation and local cultural adaptation. Multinational advertisers increasingly integrate indigenous languages, Nigerian celebrities, Afrobeats music, and culturally familiar narratives into advertising campaigns. However, global advertising continues to promote consumerism, Western beauty ideals, materialistic lifestyles, and cosmopolitan aspirations that influence Nigerian cultural values and identity. The study also found that Nigerian audiences actively negotiate and reinterpret advertising messages, while regulatory institutions such as ARCON moderate culturally insensitive advertising practices. The study concludes that global advertising simultaneously functions as a mechanism of cultural influence, cultural negotiation, and cultural hybridity in Nigeria.

Abstract

Electoral reform remains a critical component of democratic consolidation in Nigeria due to persistent challenges such as electoral fraud, vote buying, electoral violence, political interference, and declining public confidence in electoral processes. This study examined the role of electoral reform in promoting democratic consolidation in Nigeria through a critical analysis of the Electoral Act 2022 and emerging electoral reform proposals. The study adopted a doctrinal research methodology based on qualitative analysis of primary and secondary sources. Primary sources included the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), the Electoral Act 2022, judicial decisions, and official policy documents, while secondary sources comprised scholarly literature, election observer reports, institutional publications, and comparative electoral governance studies. The findings reveal that the Electoral Act 2022 introduced important reforms, including the deployment of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), electronic transmission of results, and enhanced regulatory powers for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which improved transparency, voter accreditation, and electoral administration. However, the study also found significant legal, institutional, and technological gaps, including implementation ambiguities, infrastructural deficiencies, weak enforcement of electoral offences, and cybersecurity vulnerabilities. Furthermore, emerging reform proposals such as mandatory electronic result transmission, the establishment of an Electoral Offences Commission, strengthening INEC’s independence, and enhanced cybersecurity measures were found to possess significant potential for improving electoral governance. The study concludes that sustainable democratic consolidation in Nigeria requires not only legislative reforms but also strong institutions, reliable infrastructure, effective enforcement mechanisms, and sustained political commitment.

Abstract

The development of digital technology has driven a shift in payment systems from cash to non-cash methods that are more efficient and practical. In the pesantren environment, the use of electronic money through the Katalis Barokah application represents an innovation to facilitate transactions between students (santri) and their parents (wali santri). However, in its implementation, there are still issues related to security and ease of use that may affect user satisfaction. This study aims to analyze and determine the effect of security and ease of use on the satisfaction of wali santri at Pondok Pesantren Salafiyah Abu Zairi Bondowoso. This research employs a quantitative approach with an associative (correlational) method. The sample was selected using purposive sampling, involving 177 respondents. Data were collected through questionnaires, observation, and documentation. Hypothesis testing was conducted using multiple linear regression analysis. The results show that (1) security has a significant effect on wali santri satisfaction, (2) ease of use has a significant effect on wali santri satisfaction, and (3) security and ease of use simultaneously have a significant effect on wali santri satisfaction.
